    I love the fact that netflix does this during a financial crisis while many people are already cutting down on extras and accounts they don’t really need. Considering how terrible most of Netflix’ original catalog actually is…they’re gonna get a taste of actual red numbers. They haven’t seen anything yet

    • @sulylunat
      @sulylunat Год назад +25

      The reason they are having to do this now is because of the financial crisis, their pockets are hurting more than ever. People are cutting back and sharing subscriptions and resorting to other methods, all of which is losing Netflix money. I personally cut back from paying full price for the top subscription in my country to paying for that subscription via another country for much cheaper, resulting in me paying around 10-11 less per month. I already run my own Plex and have considered multiple times just dropping Netflix completely, it's not like I'll be missing the content anyway. I only really keep it around as a convenience and a way to avoid needing more hard drive space, but with all the price increases (even in the cheaper country I subscribe to which has seen two increases in the space of a year) I will probably ditch it at some stage.

    • @greennin

      Every company in the world is trying to push their crisis-costs on to the consumers. Be it tomatoes at the supermarket doubling in price due to crazy fuel costs - or netflix subs going up. we're being dumped on by businesses everywhere. Those right at the bottom carry the entire crisis on their shoulders. And the further down you are, the more weight you carry.
      I don't know about you, but I'm going to quit one stupid streaming service before I stop eating tomatoes. I hope they are aware of that big picture.

    I had a Netflix account because the kids used it a lot. I rarely did. When they moved out, we kept the account just to give them a bit of a financial break when they were starting out on their own. When the new policy was announced, I decided that it was not worth my while to keep the account and worked out a termination date that was mutually agreeable but well short of the termination date. Turns out that neither of them saw any great value in Netflix any more so, regarding us, Netflix is now minus one account. They would still be collecting a monthly fee if they had left well enough alone. As with most economic decisions like this, they saw their service as maybe more highly valued by the customer than it really was.

    • @LG1ikLx
      @LG1ikLx Год назад

      I think allot of people closed their account after this because they lost a ton of subscriptions. They announce stopping account sharing (After promoting they allow it years before hand) around the time people have less money due to financial crisis and as soon as other streaming services start blowing up.
      They really aren't the smartest of companies when they built it on loans and now are squeezing the customer for more cash when there is plenty of other and better imo options. Prime for example offers more then just TV when you get ndd on most Amazon products. And the catalog on prime is a wider range in content. Disney has better selection for family movies to watch with the kids. Netflix only has a handful of good shows and even those are being cut back on.

      Similar here. I pay for Netflix, but I run my own Plex Server, so rarely use it. But my mum uses it as well, coz Plex is being a bitch for remote viewing. I'm fine with this as it means that sub isn't just wasted cash each month as I will sometimes go for months at a time without watching any shows, much less Netflix ones. But if Netflix doesn't want that business, I'll happily drop them. Not like I'll be losing out on anything given how little I use it already.

    My favorite part about Netflix doing this is they seem to have a major revenue problem over there, but they are plugging entirely the wrong holes. Password sharing steals $0 of revenue from them, but making users decide that it’s not worth the trouble for the expense they pay absolutely is. The service should be easier and less risky to use than pirating, not harder and more risky, and half of their problem stems from their inability to keep their own content going for longer than a single season.

Stealing money would be if they could have gotten that money in the first place, if someone is account sharing they either can't afford it or don't want to pay for Netflix, which means Netflix would have never got that money in the first place.
      Company actions like this is what just leads to people circumventing these measures, and people pirating. It's a direct cause-effect relationship, and it's always because of shitty business decisions. Anytime a streaming service or cable has done something stupid, or something that made it less convenient for people, people turned to piracy, i.e., the most convenient option. It isn't our job to respect companies, it's their job to put consumers first, because without us they don't earn money. Now I get the same shows everyone gets + the ones from other services, for free, and no one is limiting me, tracking my location and shows I watch, nor do they have access to my credit card, nor they're selling my data to Google and everyone else.

I've experienced this with screening limits with directv now using IPs as active streams, so I'd use up all four of my streams sometimes in one sitting while watching something, then I'd have to wait 24 hours to be able to use the service which is ultimately why I ended up cancelling it in the past.

      2. "You buy a Netflix subscription for your household, sharing it is theft".
      - If by your definition would you also consider 2 people sharing 1 phone plan "theft" as well? Its 1 subscription per person, soo many other things; shopping membership, your car, any other streaming services, literally Netflix themselves like 2 years ago 🤣, sharing was not an issue and even them encouraged it.. until money became a problem. It all comes down to what people are willing to accept, that's why they literally test it out in smaller countries first before moving up as they see that they can get away with it, if more people cancelled their plan I can guarantee you we would not be here having this convo.
      - A household doesn't mean 1 fixed address, people have multiple homes, kids going to college, people who are traveling for work.. like I said, now they're making it more inconvenient even to people who weren't sharing their account before.
      3. "If I had a restaurant and you pay to sit at the table, not per person, you'd be pissed if you caught a customer sneaking in a extra table."

    To help reduce the attack surface you could just have the "server" with one port linked to a DMZ (a subnetwork with no routing to the "main" network) and use that for the vpn internet connection (this assumes at least 2 ethernet ports)
    That does although involve some router tinkering and depending if your router normaly supports it, mine for example has a setting for that (although I don't use it currently).
    And since this is all in the internal network unless they somehow manage to log the local IP adress of the device, from the outside it should all just appear as your router's public IP.

    • @captainnope1066
      @captainnope1066 Год назад +3

      I believe in wireguard (and maybe also other services) you can also just restrict the allowed outgoing ips to exclude your lan, so that anyone connected to through that tunnel can't actually interact with any local network. Doesn't need any extra ethernet ports, and despite it being purely software it should be secure.

    A couple things to note: Netflix could easily detect that a VPN is active on the device. Spectrum, for example, won’t work on my AppleTV when I have a Tailscale VPN session active (which I need to connect to a remote Channels DVR server). A workaround for this would be to implement the Tailscale channel on an external device through which the AppleTV (or other set top box) would connect.
    From a security perspective it is a bad idea to give others access to your network by implementing an exit node on your LAN. A better solution would be to set up a Tailscale exit node outside of your regular network or isolating its access from your network a strong firewall.
