Fantastic review, you summed it up perfectly with the Volvo C40 recharge "stands on it's own", gives people the taste of the EV experience without being overwhelming", and "It's for people who want an EV, not for people who want to be seen driving one!" You and Doug Demuro have done the two best reviews I've seen so far.
I think the old man fear of EV's is more about the fear of loosing a choice, which the liberals are pushing for and is happening in pockets of this country, rather than gaining another option on top of gasoline/diesel to propel yourself around your world.
I feel the same way about my 2018 Chevrolet Volt LT. I just wanted something fun, zippy, and something that wouldn't guzzle gas. I only spent $25 in gas this month. I drive on EV for my daily commute. I will never go back to a full ICE vehicle. I'll do a full EV, or a plug in hybrid.
Unfortunately, until EV prices become as cheap as the affordable, capable ICE cars, until people are convinced used EVs will last, and charging infrastructure catches up in more towns, then EVs will still be considered a luxury possession. But now that super cheap, reportedly well-built Chinese EVs like BYD's are threatening the traditional American automakers EV market, they will have to work on introducing their own cheap EVs and ensure future competitivenes against Chinese EVs, even their survival. Edit; the Bolt is already fairly affordable. But some places like Ohio charge an extra $200/year to register an EV! And why aren't people buying it, still? I guess a lack of home charger or local EV stations? Comparison to the "Japanese car invasion" anybody? Well I'm not sure if the Chinese ev "threat" is a good comparison, but the affordable, well-built, fuel efficient Japanese cars of the 70s stole a good chunk of sales from the unprepared American brands who couldn't catch up in sales for a long time. At least with Chevy's experience in building their current EVs (the Bolt is pretty affordable right?), they have experience that can possibly be used to move the tech to lower cost models.
I just had the tyres on my EV6 replaced two weeks ago. 19,500 miles is pretty good going for 600Nm of torque. All four tyres pretty much wore down evenly as well. You absolutely do end up screaming away from any light or junction like a maniac; even when you gently pull away in eco mode everyone else seems to end up at least a little bit back in your rear-view mirror. I stopped saying "good for an EV" after about a month into ownership. Now I just say "it's the best car I've ever owned, better than even my 2016 Mustang GT" and leave it at that.

I’m glad I leased mine because the next gen of them will be even better.
A member of my state’s Volvo Enthusiast Group got a C40 Recharge recently, they didn’t think the interior build quality was up to snuff. Obviously this comes from longtime Volvo owners so that’s the bar it’s measured against. Go test drive one if you can, you who are reading this. Youll understand it well then.
It seems great apart from the subpar range, yeah. An extra 50 miles to bring it up to the ioniq 5/6 would have greatly facilitated the occasional road trip.
@@ivy_47 My wife drives it to south Jersey fairly regularly, about 100 miles away. If she goes right to her mothers and then home she doesn't need to charge, If she takes her mother out running around, they stop at Target 'cause they have chargers. I feel the same about our 2015 Leaf. It's just a basic car with an electric powertrain. It solves all of our daily driving needs and costs only 3 cents a mile to drive.
Oh man, the deluxe Hard Drivin' cab indeed was quite an experience. Only got to play on those cabs once. Also, the owner of the C40 Recharge walking out of the car to demonstrate the auto-stop is some boss shit lol
So glad you mentioned the placement of the fuel tank in the GTO!!! Many other cars put it UNDER the back seat. Ya know, just forward the baby seat anchors? Yeah, feels safe!
Did Mercedes ever stop using that position? They sure made a lot of industry leading safe cars with the fuel tank right there in the 80s and 90s. I think an impact strong enough to disturb the tank would likely have killed everyone instantly, it's nicely protected inside a big steel hoop far from either end of the car.
I have one of these. I left the house with all the intentions of buying an Ionic5 and made a last-minute stop at the Volvo dealer just up the street from the Hyundai dealership. Show me what you got and tell me what it is going to cost me. Hands down they wanted to sell me a car and they certainly made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Mine is green and funny as it may seem, I have some Ikea furniture in my house that is damn near the same color as my car. Uncanny I tell you. I really love driving this car. I have never owned anything this powerful and I am not afraid to surprise the hell out of the occasional speed racer on 222. I have given rides to some people with very powerful vehicles and the way that Volvo puts your ass in the seat has pretty much surprised everyone. Personally I love the look of it. I like the Polestar2 also but my C40 in green is fantastic. My final thought...don't let the price scare you, just find the Volvo dealer that wants to put it in your driveway.
I would do that with the plug-in hybrid of theirs. I'd like to try an EV, but I live where plugging in an EV overnight is damn near impossible (a condo complex with carports). I think it's the S60 Recharge or something. Love that car!
That Placebo Home Security bit sounded like something straight from Welcome to Night Vale. The dramatic but weirdly calm music, the smooth measured speech...
Man Roman has really nailed the "concerned infomertial" voice. Like i nearly exclected him to start listing side effects for some not quite legal medicine to cure cancer. Its so calm
The EV Niros are pretty nice, as a Kia tech I strongly recommend once a week beating on the brakes in sport mode to keep the rotors clean from rust. Also continue avoiding DC fast chargers if you can, they lower the lifespan of the battery with repeated use.
taught myself how to drive a manual on the sit-down Hard Drivin'. Got a ride 75 miles away to buy my first car (Volvo 245 Turbo manual) and drove it home without any stalls, first time ever using a real clutch. Hard Drivin' was second only to OutRun in overwhelming life influence.
the CX40 is an identical "car" with the squared off hatch area to be more practical. And I call it a car because it is. Look at pictures of this and the Polestar, it has the same body/roofline, just different front and rear treatments and a slightly lifted suspension.
Old man checking in (born 1965😖): Spent the past few years driving an i3 REx. Amazing to hear comments from young & old who tell me how EVs won't work (despite me racking up 92,000 trouble-free miles on fuel 1/5 the cost of our Seattle-area gasoline). Beating an E92 V8 from stoplights is plenty hp for me (even if its nominally just 170hp). Biggest issue is the vandalized and broken public fast chargers (just came across one yesterday in Cle Elum, WA "Out of Oder" (sic) taped to it weeks ago.
It looks more comprehensive than the "This house has XXX home security" signs I see for sale for $10 at the local hardware store. Though probably not by much.
God damn it, you guys got me with the placebo home security add, I tried to skip and everything. I was even thinking, hey that kinda sounds like the Roman….
Always love your videos on classics! If you are ever in the portland Oregon area, ive got a 1956 Chevy 150 that you’d be welcome to take for a spin! Would have been more fun when I had the original 235 inline 6 and three on the tree but just upgraded to a 350 with a three speed automatic.
I'm just imagining Placebo Home Security got started because somebody entered the wrong integer on their Fleshlight order and they (rightfully) do not accept returns.
My wife's Audi EV also has butt-based starting and stopping. It's infuriating. Want to get in and turn the climate on? Ok, but DON'T MOVE - This is especially fun when it's 90 degrees at the local farm and there's no cell coverage. I sure do love sitting in a 110 degree car because I want the interior cool before I drive away! Want to pick up your husband at the Ford dealer and get in the passenger seat so he can drive? CAR SHUTS OFF. Hop in for a second to grab something out of the center console? EVERYTHING WAKE UP LET'S GOOOO!
isn't there an app to turn on the hvac before you get in? There is for the Volvo. It can also be set to be ready for you at a specific time, like when you leave for / get out of work.
@@benjaminbuschi284 Yeah but it's only accessible by the "owner" aka my wife, so when I go to the car with just the boring old key, I'm a slave to the butt sensor.
@@jerkychew899 Ah, yeah you can have multiple profiles on the Volvo. When I unlock it with my key it auto adjusts the HVAC, mirrors, and seat to my liking.
The C40 is a tradeoff XC40 with essentially no upside. You save $250 on sticker and get 3 miles more range. But you get no rear visibility, less cargo space, and the polarizing kammback look. The C40 can't be the best EV because it's just a crappier XC40.
I have to agree. we got it used and the price was right so we didn't really choose this one so much as it was a good match. Also my wife liked the blue, with blue carpet.
Today I was driving when a palm-sized spider crawled across my window. It was outside on the driver's side window so my natural reaction was to lean into my car in retreat, but being arachnophobic I can't help but wonder what would have happened if it appeared on my passenger seat instead. Seeing this car stop as you step out is very appealing today

I used to work at Volvo in The Netherlands back when the XC40 P8 came out. Within the first week a mechanic managed to crash one thru a workshop wall into the showroom when he got out without putting it in park. Maybe thats why they made it so it just shuts off when you get out...
One time at the pocono mountain wawa on 209 i backed my chevy volt from the pump into a parking spot (flawlessly might i add) and an old man completely unprompted said “that was the dumbest way ive seen anyone park”. Maybe old PA men have their panic center activated at the sight of a plug in hybrid
I recently rented a Niro EV and was surprised with how much EVs (event the charging wasn't a tremendous deal breaker). I am hoping my GTI makes it long enough for me to see the EV GTI that VW claims will release in 2025 but if not, I will be looking at this Volvo C40. Unfortunately FB groups seem to indicate lots of QOL issues with the car.

If the battery packaging can be as far away and small as a gas tank, I’ll be cool with it. I wouldn’t be cool with sitting on a gas tank though. “Transmission tunnel” packaging fine too
i recently and finally got rid of my 2013 nissan rogue after the transmission decided to slow nissan quality. i used the money to buy a almost brand new nx350h all wheel drive that was a demo car. it's like going from mr pib to Dr pepper.
So basically Volvo set out to make an electric car that is just a car with an electric motor and battery instead of a 4 cylinder motor and a gas tank. This is how all EVs should be for now
Sort of. Some EVs are literally that, even models that have only ever been electric are clearly based on gasoline car architecture. Look at the Nissan Leaf's motor assembly, it's clearly designed to fit in the same hole as an inline four and transaxle. That seems like pretty stagnant design, EVs really should be designed from the ground up in ways that make sense as EVs. But I think you're talking about in terms of driver experience, just make them "cars which are powered by electricity" rather than "Electric Cars™". That's what we all want, and we're gradually getting closer with a few models. Though unfortunately at the same time the opposite is happening, many gasoline cars are headed in the direction of "Electric Cars™ which are powered by gasoline engines." The question is where on that spectrum will they end up converging? Enough with the gadgets, we just want cars that do what we need and nothing else!
I drive that same way in my LEAF and my god yes it does go through tires. I just started putting the standard tires on it instead of the expensive LRR stuff since they're going to get replaced every year anyway.
I've said since Tesla made the Model 3 that the winner of the EV race will make a car that isn't that different from a gas car. I think this is the winner
True, but the point is that Teslas stand out among other cars, even if they are common themselves. And certainly have a reputation, a reputation they place upon their drivers as well. This on the other hand just blends in with all the other cars, and nobody will notice it or its driver.
EVs should be able to get either, at least if it's the same hardware. Not like a gasoline car where bigger engine is thirstier. The power vs. range compromise can be controlled by the driver's foot just as well as by built-in software. It might make more sense in other ways though, I thought about the "pay extra to enable more power" option some cars have, and while I know it's a money-grab I can see an argument for it, that pushing that same hardware harder will cause more warranty claims. This could be similar, even the same hardware if pushed harder would cost more to honor more warranty claims. Then there's the tires, though that too can be left to the owner to decide how much rubber they want to burn. Another element that might make a little more sense is insurance, that a model with less power might be cheaper to insure, especially in some markets, and they assume buyers of this would prefer less (still loads) of power and lower insurance rates. In reality I still suspect it's to avoid self-competing with their more up-market models without having to design different hardware, the cost savings of lower-performance hardware wouldn't outweigh the engineering and production costs of separate parts.
With the polestar tune, it also adds a traction control button that you don't get on the standard car. And even though they are a direct fit, you can get Brembo's on the polestar but not the Volvo. There is definitely purposeful nerfing.

I wish I could go out in public wearing a beater at 40 years of age, I have lots of respect to those that still do.
I think it's the opposite really. The older I get, the less I give a F and just wear what I like. Sweat pants and tank tops all summer baby!
Nice
Not enough BROWN
The New Vegas reference made me smile. Thank you
I have one of these.
2:30 this is why im glad to be a long-time RCR subscriber. god bless these reviews
Its so calm
Of all the Factor ads I've seen on other channels, this one makes me want to try it the most.
I have Hard Driving for Sega. Phantom Photon was my arch nemesis for YEARS.
The EV Niros are pretty nice, as a Kia tech I strongly recommend once a week beating on the brakes in sport mode to keep the rotors clean from rust. Also continue avoiding DC fast chargers if you can, they lower the lifespan of the battery with repeated use.
BEST AD EVER
taught myself how to drive a manual on the sit-down Hard Drivin'. Got a ride 75 miles away to buy my first car (Volvo 245 Turbo manual) and drove it home without any stalls, first time ever using a real clutch.
Hard Drivin' was second only to OutRun in overwhelming life influence.
If this was a sedan or wagon, then it would be the second ev I would consider purchasing. Right behind the polestar.
the CX40 is an identical "car" with the squared off hatch area to be more practical. And I call it a car because it is. Look at pictures of this and the Polestar, it has the same body/roofline, just different front and rear treatments and a slightly lifted suspension.
Poop and fallout new vegas jokes all in one video. I can go to bed happily tonight. Thank you mr regular.
Bruh i thought it was really an ad until i heard Roman. I will use this pseudo ad in my ad show "Mad!Ads".
Old man checking in (born 1965😖):
Spent the past few years driving an i3 REx.
Placebo Home Security has matched my every expectation! I'm not sure what they're doing over there but whatever it is it's working!
I like that the screen is integrated into the dash. Other cars seem to go for the iPad glued to the dash look which is awful
“Making you shift into drive by making you complete two side quests from Mr. House” 😂😂😂😂
I love his "I just like stuff that stays the same" voice and sayings!
Also my wife liked the blue, with blue carpet.
lol the fallout new vegas reference was good
Today I was driving when a palm-sized spider crawled across my window. It was outside on the driver's side window so my natural reaction was to lean into my car in retreat, but being arachnophobic I can't help but wonder what would have happened if it appeared on my passenger seat instead. Seeing this car stop as you step out is very appealing today
Your intro editorial was just absolutely hilarious!!!
Good morning Mr. Regular:
Techsesive. Outstanding and it needs to become part of the lexicon.
Main Street Monshine. I want a review.
Calling out the Explorer SUV craze. Kudos.
You described my super hero Halloween costume.
"Horsey Sauce" is best when mixed with "Arby-Q sauce".
The Roman flying colors for AMC. If only they had 10 more years.
Thanx!
Placebo Home Security commercial is one of the most convincing pieces of advertisement I've ever seen.
Why hasn't RCR and Savagegeese collabed on anything? Also please release a compilation video of all your fake company ads....I'm sure it'll get phenomenal views.
The part about Miata drivers and their tires is spot on.
20:33 I feel targeted, I will wait 20 minutes for a McDonald’s order, and I’m on my third Volvo. But I like them because they give you enough power and they will get you into or out of any driving situation, besides a u-turn
When Roman said the line "Why BE safe, when you can FEEL safe", I got an add for a Ford Territory soon afterwards and that made me snort my coffee
I used to work at Volvo in The Netherlands back when the XC40 P8 came out. Within the first week a mechanic managed to crash one thru a workshop wall into the showroom when he got out without putting it in park. Maybe thats why they made it so it just shuts off when you get out...
This is a golden mr regular episode
damn I'm so called out
I never drive behind log trucks because of the final destination movies
Immediately after the Placebo ad, I got a utube ad for "pro lems with constipation?"
"by completing two sidequests from Mr. House" - Oh yeah, you got me there! 🤣
Hi, I am the son of my mom who you let drive your R32 skyline. Thanks btw also I am local here in Schuylkill county. For the giveaway, this is my RUclips account. And for the stick shift, I know how to drive it I was just nervous. It felt unreal.
Ya'lls commercials make my day. Keep on w/ the amazing work
Was already thinking this was a pretty good video… then the Placebo Security ad pops up… lmao! Well done.
It's electric. It's fast. It's a Volvo. The aristocrats is an overrated ghost story. The home security phommercial was entertaining.

If the battery packaging can be as far away and small as a gas tank, I’ll be cool with it.
I wouldn’t be cool with sitting on a gas tank though.
“Transmission tunnel” packaging fine too
Hard Drivin' was THE best
i recently and finally got rid of my 2013 nissan rogue after the transmission decided to slow nissan quality. i used the money to buy a almost brand new nx350h all wheel drive that was a demo car. it's like going from mr pib to Dr pepper.
We also traded a Rogue in buying this. The transmission also felt like it was about to grenade.
Lololol I totally tried the skip ad at first on the Placebo Home Security
10:30 yeah it's safe unless you're crossing the street on foot and the mom who feels safe is entering the intersection and checking her grindr.
Dont think I didn't see that XC70 in the background.
Review the volvo xc70 please!!
The Susquehanna River....it's BROWN!
MAN, I would TOTALLY buy a Placebo Home Security sign for my lawn off of you!
The home security system ad is the best one I’ve ever seen 😂 I’m dying so hard. Where can I get one?
"if you want to be seen, buy a Tesla." 😂Theres no place in the US where a Tesla is a rarer sight than an electric Volvo.
True, but the point is that Teslas stand out among other cars, even if they are common themselves. And certainly have a reputation, a reputation they place upon their drivers as well. This on the other hand just blends in with all the other cars, and nobody will notice it or its driver.
Placebo Home Security, the Enron of home security systems.
Thanks for reminding me to pay my Placebo Home Security bill. I sure wouldn't like to get caught without my Placebo!
2:55 I didn't think Mr Regular was old enough to remember Hard Drivin'
One of the most regular cars in Norway, haha. You see these everywhere.
Still have that RENNtech E63s wagon for your review
I drove one the other day at my job after giving one flat tire repair. I can’t not say I don’t like being seen driving this.
Volvo isn't "nerfing" it compared to the Polestar, they're just trading in power for more range - which makes more sense for a family focused vehicle
Please post a seperate video of just the commercial. (Second channel videos?) I want to send it to my friends.
I loved the Green Day reference
I’ll skip through real ads all day long, but fake ads are usually worth watching.
The word that comes to mind for commanding old men, is *CROTCHETY*
