- Its a good idea to upgrade brakes whenever you add horsepower to your vehicle, especially when your rotors are solid and from the 80s. On this episode we use W126 non V8 brake rotors from (1986-1991 gen2) which are 20mm Larger than the previous generation (1985-1979 gen1) but that does run into its own issues like trimming the dust shield, and potentially upsizing your wheels. The Calipers have to be exchanged with as well do to the thicker vented style rotor, if you do stick to 280mm rotors the calipers will be more available and a bit cheaper. or you can pick them up at your local junk yard for over 50% off and they're original OEM parts but might require a rebuild and resurfacing so the cost might be about the same.
Solid video!
Just wish I could hear you a bit better!
Other than that, more Merc content like this would be fantastic
i appreciate the feedback! ill try and improve the audio . thanks for the love man!
Nice! Good video !

What sort of wheels are those? Ive got 17" hammers but those black ones are mint!
theyre 16x8 crager D window steelies , but i did have to get a 5x114 lug conversion kit
Do you have part numbers for the calipers and rotors? Thanks
unfortunately i do not, but from what ive read online the W126 up till 1985 used the 280MM rotors which is stock size for w123 but vented, so you will need the appropriate caliper from the same year as well. after 1986 the w126 rotors are 300MM the caliper will be a little larger as well, but if you do use the 300MM rotors the stock dust shield will need to be modified a little bit to fit. doing the 280MM is still an upgrade since its a vented ticker rotor .
Thank you for the great video and content!
I was wondering if you could provide some feedback on the brake performance since the conversion. Was the effort to convert worth it?
Thanks in advance!
so far no complaints , but i have not used them to the point where i would see brake fade or over heating. im sure if there was a continuous 100 - 0 brake test the solid rotors will fade quick while the vented will probably remain consistent for a while until other factors come into play like brake fluid and pad conditions. ill try and make a test video but i dont have any stock rotors to compare too .
@@averageasianalchemist69 Thank you, appreciate the feedback!
With the larger diameter I assume you have a small amount better modulation and with the thicker vented disks I assume less fade. Otherwise how is brake feel and performance? Worth it? I am about to get my 2jz powered w123 and I am already looking at mods. Calipers and rotors, and maybe a single turbo setup are high on my list of wants.
Awesome that sound like a great project upcoming! i went with the standard 280mm and the brakes feel about the same i havent pushed the car enough to notice any brake fade, i also didnt want to mess with the brake balance introducing a larger caliper and rotor to the front but anything to improve brakes is a must especially with way more power than stock! dont want to end up like that 1000hp falcon !!!!
@@averageasianalchemist69 yeah I'm not planning on a dumb amount of power. Just maybe in the 350 to 400 whp range with a bit less complexity than the OEM twins that are currently mounted. I've had a couple of twin turbo Subarus in the past and the nightmare of dealing with old 90's turbo control is tiring. I'm not sure exactly what transmission is mounted so I don't want to push it. Also it's immaculately restored bar the 2j so I'm hesitant to molest it to much.
@@Mishadbull 350-400 is quite alot , stock is around 70 hp lol! i ditched the whole stock turbo system but i had to also go Aftermarket ECU so it definitely has its positives and negatives .
Any idea if the 300mm gen2 w126 disc and rotors is a bolt on upgrade also ?
yes you can upgrade to the w126 300mm vented rotors and larger calipers
@@averageasianalchemist69 Thanks! Much appreciated
Hey, thanks for the video. So with w126 calipers you can use both 280 and 300 mm rotors? If I pick 300mm, I must cut the cover, right?
yes to go with the larger rotor you have to trim the edge of the dust cap a little or just remove it completely, but some say its best to leave it on for cooling reasons and also get the w126 caliper as well .
@@averageasianalchemist69 Thanks a lot, someday will change rotors for sure. Bought a coupe a week ago, but it is very rusty thanks to Canadian road salt. Good thing w123 are pretty much analog and DIY cars.
Hello, I noticed that you have a different steering gear, what car does it come from?
hello, i used steering components from a nissan 370z , but im thinking about redoing it again to increase steering angle
@@averageasianalchemist69 I have the same thing, only I set it up with the w210, if you find a solution, let me know, greetings
@@pawefilipowski9586 i used to have the 210 rack but the ratio was so long it took forever to make u-turns. now im at full lock 1.5 turns but i need like 20 more degrees . when i find a better solution ill let you know for sure
thanks greetings
What wiring harness you using and ecu!?
