We have had some Tillandsias for about 30 years. They just sit in pots basically on top of the potting mix. They are outside and the conditions range from hot and dry to cool and wet. They get very little fertilizer and very little watering, so they basically look after themselves. They flower 3 to 4 times a year. The only attention they really get is when I separate them when they outgrow the pots.
I do keep a little bit of water at the bottom of the containers my tillandsia sit in because I think it acts in the same way as a pebble tray, keeping the humidity levels a little higher around the plant. I don't let the plant touch the water at all. I soak my tillandsia weekly and fertilize once every month to six weeks with a weak solution of orchid fertilizer. They seem to be doing well.
You can add some fertilizer to a spritzer and spray them occasionally but they really need little in the way of feed. Just go easy if you do. They are self pollinating.
Can Tillandsia be grown under artificial light? I keep poison dart frogs which means I have a number of terraria and paludaria that simulate rainforest floor conditions and they can't be exposed to direct sunlight because of radiant heating inside the vivaria so artificial light is my only option. All the other tropical plants I have seem to thrive under artificial light (tubes that emit the same spectrum as the sun) but I don't currently have any air plants and would like to add some.
Crown rot isn't generally an issue with these. Hang them in a sunny window and mist them a few times per week with a spray bottle and they stay relatively happy.
I bought an air plant in a glass globe. I was surprised to find that it was actually glued to the red moss and the whole thing was stuck to the globe. Will I damage the plant if I try to separate it from the moss?
Unfortunately I had to tear the outer layers of the plant because they were stuck to the red moss. It has been 2 weeks and the remaining plant seems to be okay, not growing but not dying neither.
I've been collecting some of these, fun to grow. No dirt!

THANKS YOU FOR A VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO. LOTS OF VALUABLE KEY POINTS FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW ABOUT AIR PLANTS. GREAT VIDEO ONCE AGAIN !
I honestly love your addition of the "r" sound to some words. Thank you for the info!
Sent your Ionanthe ball, and Cholla Tillandsia set,to my brother, for his birthday-shared it on Twitter😘
They are lovely. :) Thank you for the information! I'm looking forward to growing some here at home. :)
thanks so much for great tips
watching from 🇵🇭
How do you fertilize them? Mines blooming right now, very similar to the ionantha shown, but I'm not sure if their self pollinators. Thank you

thanks for the info..can you tell me if you are supposed to cut off the flower stalk after the flower has faded?
You can

Yes, they can grow under artificial light.
you mentioned giving them occasional fertilizer..would you recomend all purpose or a higher nitrogen?
All-purpose but go easy they are meager feeders.
Very very nice mr
Do you have to let your tap water sit out before using it for watering?
If you have hard water, or water that has a lot of chemicals, we would suggest letting it sit out before using it.
Thank you for sharing this.
What about crown rot?
Crown rot isn't generally an issue with these. Hang them in a sunny window and mist them a few times per week with a spray bottle and they stay relatively happy.
Love your voice 😉

No as long as you don’t tear the plant apart.
Unfortunately I had to tear the outer layers of the plant because they were stuck to the red moss. It has been 2 weeks and the remaining plant seems to be okay, not growing but not dying neither.
The roots on. Air plants do not take in moisture. The roots are only for anchoring.
So direct sunlight is ok?
Absolutely!
❤
