I just learned about Barnevelders early this year (2025) and decided to get six of them. Two of them are the blue laced, the other four are bronze and black. They're some of the most gorgeous chickens I have ever seen. I got my first pullet egg yesterday. So exciting. I was motivated to try this breed, as we are in a northern climate here in Wisconsin. I'm really pleased with my decision. They seem pretty smart. And again, they are just so beautiful.
They look stunning, it's so weird how chickens can be so beautiful. The golden bronze pattern over iridescent black just wow. It looks like the scale armor of a king.
Interesting. I may get some to add to one of my flocks. I have some white and black wyandottes, and love their patterns. I rescued a Barnevelder rooster, not quite 1 yr yet and he's pretty. Thanks for the extra info into their history.
Black and white is so stunning I found myself uncharacteristically just a little bit jealous. I have to have one or two. I didn't think I was jealous. Appreciate knowing they MUST have Marek's vaccine. Great and very informative video as is all of your videos. I am watching them more and more. Informative and to the point.
Thanks for the video! I just happen to have a barnevelder 😊 and watched your welsummer video yesterday and have one of those also!! My spring batch included these two birds, neither of which are laying yet, but they are gorgeous and I’m so pleased with my choice. My Barney is getting pretty chatty but you’re right not loud like my Rhode Island Red.
I bought 20 sexied and 10 unsexed Barnevelders from Tractor Supply of all places. They are slow growers and start laying at about 5-6 month. We lost out on the ten unsexed chicks and ended up with 6 roosters and only 4 hens but the roosters have the most beautiful deep green feathers. The hens layed about 5-6 dark brown/ chocolate “all like a chocolate bar “ colored with speckles and we had three that layed double yokers. We breed then with are Rhode Island reds and ended up with same truly beautiful colors. We moved and had to leave the flock behind with the new owners. We just started a new flock with 20 RIR hens and 2 roosters and 9 Barred Rock hens and 1 rooster. The chicks are 4 weeks old and so far they have all survived. We hatch a new set of 42 chicks every 6 months and rotate the original 30 hens to meat. We do keep our eyes open for any bird that lays extra large or double yokes as breeders so we can improve our egg laying.
Currently have two aged hens and a pullet Barnevelder. I ended up with a rooster who seems pretty easy going. Trying to find what a mature Barnevelder looks like.
I am going to start having chcikens this year and I have decided to just get Blue Laced Barnvelders as they are scheduled to be available this year at my local feed store. I am so looking forward to getting them to enjoy the eggs and the beautiful birds. I'm incluned to not have a rooster, but we'll see how it goes. maybe I can have a rooster separate and only use the rooster to replace birds as needed. I do not want fertilized eggs, it freaks my wife out. We have gotten some bloody ones from a friend and my wife no likey.
Had twelve BARVLEDERS runing with two cockerels they are a magnificent bird and very friendly indeed and the only two pure breeds that beat them in my humble opinion for egg laying is the WELSUMMER and the MARAN which are all brown egg layers. Shame you dont have a picture of the cockerel who have a magiifcent plumage
I’ve been trying to find a breeder of double laced barnavelders. So far , no luck. I want to raise them as pets. Only want 6 hens and maybe one rooster.
Are you in the states? I know of several. I just hatched 8 double laced silver barnevelders. And picked up a regular brown one from the local farm store.

Sounds like not a good choice for gardening zone 8b, here in Fort Worth, Texas - Fort Worth, Texas area.

We have a flock of 4 hens and one rooster Double Silver Laced Barnevelders in Tasmania. Stunning home flock.

“Barnevelder” is four syllables, not three. Delightful birds. I had a pair for eight years. I still miss them.
2 and a half in the south is fine

Sounds great
That lacing is so much prettier than the ones I got from the hatchery.
I'm getting Gold Double Laced Barnevelder within a few days. I'm getting eggs to hatch.

So beautiful
I had them many years ago . The stock I got was very weak . I got them from mcmurrey and they would die one day for what seemed no reason .
Beautiful bird. It's pronounced "bar-nuh-vel-der"
My neighbor just got some. I think I’ll add some next uear

@@nicolerose2966 yes. WA state. I’m trying to find local so the chicks don’t have to come through the post office.
anyone know where I can order a Barney pullet that ships??
I have two and one is sooooo broody
My mom only has one and she tried to attack us and my 17lbs shih tzu.
May go broody?
Well, maybe they lost the chocolate, from getting stuck at hatching with meds?
Anything from the Netherlands is good! Lol
Have you tasted the salted licorice 😂
