This son of Burundi, survived a horrible genocide at his school in a boarding school where Tutsi students were separated from other students and were asked to choose the means to be killed: machete or if you had money you could buy the bullet. He escaped and few months later, he sustained a gunshot wound and fled to Kenya. This was in 1993. He went to the refugee camp and eventually he was given a scholarship and an opportunity to seek refuge in England. He found healing in music, which he says became his: “Great Escape”. JP Bimeni survived the genocide, he was 16 years old. President Mandela said of music that listening and dancing connect people. Music transcends hate and any divide. Listen to this voice! Definitely soothing. When will Burundi be free so all her children can come back to rebuild her, to heal her and to sing her beauty? Until this day happens, hopefully sooner than later, all the children of Burundi in exile, in refugee camps, those internally displaced, those incarcerated, the voiceless, we should all continue to speak up-in music,in poetry. We should all keep beating the drum for justice, for peace. We shall never give up. We are all missing her so much:our motherland, our darling Burundi. Amahoro
