Quite true. It's almost like Godzilla is an afterthought. It shows a very emotional Japan right after WWII with people just trying to survive bombed out cities etc. When Godzilla is on the screen, it's pretty wild but mostly, to me, it was a character study.

AMAZING movie!!! Everything about the movie was so good. The visuals, GODZILLA and even the actors. I was stunned in the first 10 minutes. Great work. Can’t wait for more!
Just came from seeing it at the Movie Theater. I really enjoyed it a lot! This movie has way more heart than any other Godzilla in memory and I’ve seen a lot of them. Godzilla was menacing as hell too. For a movie made for $15 Million US dollars, I’m damn impressed on just how much was done in this movie for that price. Because for the price to make this movie, it’s more impressive than many $150-300 Million dollar blockbuster priced movies. And it has a real story with heart as well on top of a menacing god their monster.
This movie was by far one of the best Godzilla movies since the original 1954. Id give this movie a 11/10 with acting, score, storyline and Godzilla himself. Overall this is a MUST watch movie
I saw it last night in a Dolby theater and OMG was it great. The sound made it seem like you were there, you literally felt the trembles. The huge screen made it seem like you were there with them and just captivated you. The acting was great, the Narrative was great, GODZILLA WAS GREAT! It was just such a good movie and a fun experience!
This is easily my favorite Godzilla movie. I cared about the characters in a way that I never did in other Godzilla movies. I'm glad you mentioned the music. I thought the whole sound design of this film was amazing, including the use of silence. I think it's one of the best films of 2023 and deserves Oscar consideration.
Easily one of the best Godzilla films made so far. Yamazaki hits it out the park! Yes, you need to keep in mind that this was mad on a fraction of the budget of a Hollywood movie, but despite the stiffness of the animation, the movie sells what it needs to and honestly looks amazing
The animation was a HUGE improvement over Shin Godzilla though. Sure, it's not on the same level as American Godzilla, but there's also a 150 million dollar budget difference, and even in spite of that the film doesn't look that much worse.
Oscar nomination for Ryonosuke Kamiki, just a brilliant performance. Amazing that except for the opening night scene, all of the other Godzilla appearances are during day-time which adds to the big fella's impact. The best Godzilla movie by far, and something that even non-kaiju fans should try to see. I'm related to the special effects man of the first movie in 1954, Eiji Tsuburaya, and I think he would have been very proud of this masterpiece.
He's the voice of Taki from Your Name and has voiced a lot of Studio Ghibli characters. He's been an actor since he was basically a baby and it was lovely to see him finally out of the teen roles he was so known when he was in his teens and early 20s.
I took my son's to an early screening. Ages 8 and 15. The 8 year old never lost interest even during the human only scenes. (Normally he wants the monsters to just come back) the older one loved the surround sound and felt that he was in the middle of the action. I loved that godzilla always felt powerful. His first appearance is like a jump scare that just keeps going. The human element was very compelling. The trailers did not give everything away which I loved. This is a must see. Especially in theaters.
I saw Godzilla minus 1 last night! Wow! Just wow! My favorite Godzilla movie of all time. Didn't hurt ( too much , Lol ) that the theater sound was very loud. I could literally feel the shaking, and the in your face encounters of the lead character helped you to feel like you were there with him. Five stars.🎉
I saw early screenings last night and I walked away thinking about it for hours, wanting to watch it again. This movie is I think my favorite Godzilla movie in years, Shin was polarizing for me because of how different Godzilla was and I didn’t see it for a long time but it grew on me over time. This was right out the gates everything and more that I could have wanted. I wanted a scary Godzilla, I wanted one that really feels like what he was originally portrayed to be. And holy shit did they pull it off, the real stand out next to Godzilla was the music for me. That new soundtrack is so dire and menacing I love it in that first big moment you see him in action. The design and how Godzilla works this time around is so good and perfect it just hits all marks of this near unstoppable threat.
Thank you for the review. I'm excited to see it. I'm 63 years old and have loved the Godzilla movies since I was a child. I hope to take my oldest grandson to this one.
Me too I'm taking my step daughter my better half thinks I never grew up because I still enjoy Godzilla movies but it's ok for her to love zombies movies lol
Went last night with my brother. It was amazing. I normally don’t get frightened at the movies, but this Godzilla had me ready to run. Very well done, such attention to detail, I felt the postwar hopelessness of the residents. To have all the progress they’d made wiped out in moments was traumatic - the loss of so many people who had survived the war. I have to go see it again.
hi.I noted with regret how praised this film is. It is ridiculous. It is only saved by the special effects. The separate shots of people-monsters are too frequent, the script is a catastrophe and the interpretation too expressive of these Japanese men who look like some pampered little girls when it should have been a masculine attitude made me waste my time unnecessarily. how stupid can you be to appreciate such a film, I ask.
If they make sequels to this, I'd like them to keep making films set in the past. Each film takes place in a different decade from the 50's up until it reaches the present day. It would help the series feel distinct from the Monsterverse and could let them experiment with some really interesting ideas. For example; how different would this world become from ours due to monster attacks now being a regular part of life since the 40's.
Godzilla Minus one (1947) Monsters - Godzilla Godzilla Zero (1954) Monsters - Godzilla (not a villain nor a hero) Anguirus I (Main Villain, dies) Ookonduru (side villain, dies) Varan Kumonga (side villain, dies) Kamacuras (Side villain, dies) (Note: I decided to add anguirus for obvious reasons, Varan is here cuz he is extremely underrated and kumonga, Ookonduruand kamacuras are here cuz films with giant spiders, Birds and mantises were pretty common in the 50s) Godzilla Plus one (1968) Monsters - Godzilla Anguirus II Ryu (New creature, manda's mate, dies) Baragon Gabara (Main Villain, dies) Ebirah Manda Varan (dies) Ookondurus (all die) (Note: Gabara and Ebirah are here cuz 60s, the Underrated trio (Manda, Varan and Baragon) are here cuz underrated and Ookundurus are annon fodder and decided to add something new and yes Ebirah lives) Godzilla New World War (1975) Monsters - Godzilla Anguirus II Rodan Titanosaurus King Caesar (he is less of a guardian kaiju and more of a mutant Lion who is benevolent) Manda Baragon Ebirah Megalon Mothra Mogu (based on the unused monster of the same name) Deutalios (another unused monster) Rodan (1986) Monsters - Rodan Megaguirus Meganulon/Meganula Baragon New flying monsters Mothra (1992) Monsters - Mothra Gigan Battra Dagarha Godzilla The New age (2008) Monsters - Godzilla Mothra II (2019) Godzilla Kaiju Wars (2023) Godzilla: Reborn (2031) (Note: I took some spoilers and chances of a sequel there)
I've seen it, and I really enjoyed it. This was a horror movie and the human characters were written really well; I will admit, I teared at the end of the movie because that's how well they were written. Also, I don't have an IMAX theater near me, but I'm considering driving out of state to see it in IMAX. If you have the time and nothing to do, go out and see Godzilla Minus One
I loved this film. CGI, VFX, sound design, score, cinematography, characters, writing, design, plot, pacing, themes, development, action, spectacle, acting, and ending were all done with so much care, passion, and love. You can tell the writers, actors, and director really did care about this franchise. Over this is a spectacular film in my opinion easily the best movie of this year and easily one of the best Godzilla/kaiju movies. Overall I'd rate this a 10/10.
Absolutely a masterpiece. I loved every minute of it. The characters are dynamic and get you totally invested in their story and struggles. And Godzilla is terrifying. 100 out of 10.
Took my whole family to see this and we all LOVED IT! It had everything a good movie needs, action, suspense, romance, humanity, and a history lesson all rolled up into one. We all want to see it again, on the IMAX screen next time--even if we have to go to another town because our theaters don't offer IMAX. And not since 300, have I heard the audience clap at the end--they did for this one!
I just saw the movie earlier tonight, and words honestly cannot describe how much I loved this movie. I can say without a doubt that Minus One is not only my movie of the year, but is the BEST Godzilla movie ever made. A genuine masterpiece in every way.
Saw it yesterday evening; the main aspect of the film - being Godzilla, of course - was a slam dunk. But the surprise for me was the fact that the human element and characters were handled beautifully. Yes, melodrama was present here and there, but generally I was too busy being entertained to really notice. Definitely something that can be enjoyed by all moviegoers, not just fans of the kaiju genre.
Went to the early fan access showing and it blew my mind! Watched it in Imax and the movie soundtrack sounded so massive! Godzilla was a true destructive threat in this movie and you couldnt help but feel the fear the characters had! Might just be my favorite Godzilla but definitely top 5!
Just saw it yesterday with a group of friends. And I only had three reactions during the entire 2 hours: open-mouthed, stunned and tears of emotion were rolling. It was absolutely stunning!
Whether you liked this or not (I didn't), you will not regret that you saw it in theatre. This movie will certainly feel very different seeing it at home on a small screen and without booming sound.
Well, good to know the wait was worth it! Thanks again for being awesome as always, Toho! Can't wait to see this when it hopefully comes out here in Britain! And now we wait for Legendary's turn...
Just saw it in IMAX! Now, that's a mf'kn Godzilla movie! No human problem. The characters had real emotions, and G was the most terrifying I've ever seen.

Just got back from seeing it. The best Godzilla movie I have ever seen. I’m 50 and have seen many of the old ones and all the new ones. This kills them all for me. Go see it!
"the characters here are all great. There are no Ford Brody's here." This is already the best review ever. My review of the review - 10 out of 10 - perfect
It so reminds me of the first movie. The characters are surprisingly fleshed out and it’s more than just about Godzilla. But when Godzilla is on the screen it had me go 😳😱 My theater clapped at the end (including myself). 10/10 👏
Just saw it yesterday at an IMAX and couldn't have been happier with the movie. I'll give the best Godzilla story to the original but Minus One was a close second and the best characters in a a Godzilla film to date. While the American made movies might have an edge in special effects, Godzilla is always best as a villain and in that role this is the best Godzilla ever and I'll rank this as my favorite in the series. Can't wait to see it again!
Just got back from an advance screening of G-1 at the AMC 14 IMAX in Grove City, OH. All I can say is wow! This is the Godzilla movie I've been waiting to see ever since I saw the 1954 version with Raymond Burr on TV when I was 9 years old. There are so many things I'd like to say about the movie, but since this video is a spoiler-free zone, I'm just going to shut up, except I will say I can't wait to see it again.
Same here brother 🙏 I've always loved Godzilla/kaiju movies. This one was different in that, like the 54 movie. It was a great movie that happened to have Godzilla in it. I almost cried twice, and I never cry in general. It was powerful, and I think my wife would actually have liked this one too.
I saw it some hours ago. And it's very high on my Godzilla movie list! The monster look here is one of the best. Yeah, there always gonna be the monster of 1964's forever classic face and majestic physical poses. But getting back: The human script, the sights, the sounds, the monster action all kept me awake and engaged. Best of all, I saw no little sore spots of new imaginative concept that I didn't like thrown in ruining everything good. Thus, I left this 2023 flick not having seen enough - which was just the way I left the 2014 flick. But maybe well enough gotta be left alone until the next time. It was, at least, better than the 2014 flick which was the flick that HAD got us believing these movies could be found great again. A small recap: Again, the lack of those distractive blemishes that I can't stand puts it high up there on my Godzilla movie list. And it THIS one has me believing we can keep even the great movies getting even better yet.
Saw this movie on sunday and had tears during the godzilla sweep music, I grew up watching the originals and my first movie in the theater that my mom took me to was a Godzilla film. It just hit me like a big nostalgic bomb.
I actually really liked the stiff movement of Godzilla. It reminded me that this is a character originating from a man in a suit. I much prefer the movement of Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla to the to fast and smooth super smooth motion of the Legendary movies.
His stiff movements in this film are intentional: the is a creature from the sea so that is where he is most comfortable and fluid; on land his bulk works against him.
Saw it in theaters tonight - it was AMAZING. As a G fan since I was a small lad back in the early 90s, this movie brought back so many nostalgic feels but with a completely fresh take on the story and the scope of his terror. I love the Legendary movies, I loved every era of Godzilla until now, and this is a welcome intro to the newest era!
The MC having to deal with not only survivors guilt but straight up PTSD throughout the movie was heart wrenching, Godzilla was the constant applied pressure, and the soundtrack and cinematography were absolutely gorgeous!! Go watch it, enjoy!
Saw it day one in Japan on IMAX, and was blown away by it. For those just getting to see it around the world, my advice is see it in the biggest screen with the best sound possible. My new favourite Godzilla movie easily.
I'm seeing it in the theatre tomorrow, and I CANNOT WAIT. I knew the moment in the trailer that the woman pushes the soldier back that I wanted to see it. That one scene told me he was coming home from the war alive...and he shouldn't have. That one small premise alone is enough to show me they're paying attention to character, and what exactly Godzilla was a manifestation of in the cultural zeitgeist at the time. It said so much about the movie in one small clip...
Saw it yesterday with my kids and I agree it is that good. Best movie I have seen in years and quite possibly the best Japanese-made movie I have ever seen. Those behind the making of this film should be proud. It’s a real gem and _very_ worth seeing.
I haven't seen it yet. The US debut is December 1st. I plan to see it this weekend. I can't wait! So excited! I just wonder if Toho is going to do a reboot of all the original Godzilla movies? That would be awesome!
To me PERSONALLY, as a Godzilla movie it was one of the worst. This movie wasn't even about Godzilla for crying out loud! As a monster movie though, it was perfect.

By far a must see saw it last night and it’s one of the best Toho has done in my opinion the movie had my anxiety through the roof the whole time you cared for the people and just overall well done
I really enjoyed it, the actors were amazing and Godzilla was genuinely terrifying, I had shivers run down my spine multiple times throughout the movie
My family really liked this movie. My wife, daughter and I saw it once and my son saw it 4 times already. Great story and we are looking forward to more from Toho.
I saw it last night at an early showing. I agree with Alastair 9 out of 10. I feel I knew too much about the movie because of the trailers. One thing not explained is why Godzilla looked burnt or charred when performing his heat ray and perhaps a little more backgriund and explanation why the monster came of from the depths when he did at the start of the film. I know that is picky but I am a Godzilla fan who loves details. Good characters, good story and Godzilla is ferocious!
I thought it was fantastic. We all go to see Godzilla movies for obvious reasons, but this one shocked me. It was a fantastic movie…and Godzilla was in it! Loved the setting, the story, the music, and of course Godzilla! I feel like some of the CG could’ve been refined a little more, BUT I really enjoyed this movie. Will definitely be going back to the theaters! I know they’re totally different things, but Godzilla X Kong has its work cut out for it if it wants to out do minus one.
This movie is incredibly well done despite a few minor short comings due to the film budget only being $11 Million. The story is and human side to this Godzilla film is Epic! Oh and it's one hell of a Godzilla film too! The movie is a complete joy for anyone who enjoys action....even if you are not a Godzilla fan this movie is for you! I saw people crying at the end of this movie....it's really special and worth a trip to the movie theater to see it.
Sucks its not releasing in my country. I would like to know how Minus One is compared with Shin Godzilla, and if there is anything that surpasses the night atomic breath scene from Shin.
@@nedrini1055 that's it? I mean they weren't fantastic but the movie was on a micro budget, plus some scenes, like the night scene, we're still pretty amazing! Was that just enough to take you out of the story?
Incredible! I was real skeptical especially after seeing that Kong x Godzilla trailer the day before when they both run towards the screen and well… none of that crap in Godzilla Minus One, it was everything this 47 year old boy hoped for! After sitting thru different variations over the years, especially the Ferris Bueller dog shit pile of one, my expectations have gone down. This film delivers! No glowing axes, no horrible acting, no buddy comedy! Well done! My favorite!
After having seen the movie, by far one of my favorite Godzilla films. 5 stars from me. This was just what we need right now. We have thw superhero (legendary) we have the demon (shin) now we have a good, nicely done CLASSICAL. This movie successfully brings everything 54 was and puts it in a modern updated lense. The whole thing was amazing.
Amerrican movie goers piss me off; cinema is NOT about CGI and VFX. It should be always about story telling and the passion behind it rather than money and capitalism
I can't wait to watch this in the cinema. I haven't been to the cinema much at all over the last few years due to there being nothing good from Hollywood. Nice having a movie to look forward to seeing in cinemas again.
I saw it yesterday, 12/26. I absolutely loved it. I saw the original 1954 not too many years after it came out. My adult son said we saw one 20 some years ago. I must now have been impressed. Yesterday's was wonderful on many levels. Characters, culture & traditions, Japan's recovery from the war. A wonderful STORY! Godzilla was pretty darn scary! All in all, I will be highly recommending it!
I loved it worth the wait. I agree it is a 9/10. I thought the whole failed kamikaze plot worked perfectly. Excellent tension. And yes Godzilla is quite the meanie. As he should be. Please if you get a chance SEE IT!

Easily one of the worst Godzilla films so far!
@@legendarygodzillatheking3049 poor thing😂😂😂
Agreed. If awards were still given based on merit, it would win many.
Nah his performance was terrible!
He's the voice of Taki from Your Name and has voiced a lot of Studio Ghibli characters. He's been an actor since he was basically a baby and it was lovely to see him finally out of the teen roles he was so known when he was in his teens and early 20s.
I saw it in IMAX and it blew me away. Not just my favorite Godzilla movie, maybe one of my favorite movies ever.
This is the first time that a Japanese Godzilla movie will be released in Latin America (on December 28) and I couldn't be more excited.
You will LOVE it
Soon!! It was fantastic!
Seeing Godzilla minus one later today in IMAX. Bigger screen, bigger noise and bigger IMMERSION
Super pumped
Definitely not my favorite. Still doesn't hold a candle to 1954. It was just ok for me.
Take the whole family. It is that great of a film. It is not just a monster movie.
Got to take my son and grandson today ❤ You won't be disappointed
We had a great time. It's a great movie. Now, I ready to see the new Godzilla x Kong movie this spring.
That was part of my issue with Shin. The stiff animation. But it wasn’t to the point of ruining the film for me. Going to see Minus One this Saturday!
That and for me Shin lacked the personality. I liked his design but he just felt stiff and bland. Goji -1 is a different story! I hope you enjoy it
I saw this last night and it was anything but stiff. In the 1st 10 minutes I was like OMG this is amazing. Hope you have fun 😊
Minus One was amazing. It perfectly captures and updates the power and weight of the 1954 Godzilla without being a direct remake.

Very half century war inspired! Which I deff got the vibe that it got inspiration from the IDW comics!
We kinda have something like that with Shin Godzilla in which we see a response from the government and with more modern weaponry
I've seen it, and I really enjoyed it. This was a horror movie and the human characters were written really well; I will admit, I teared at the end of the movie because that's how well they were written.

I have not been to a movie theatre since maybe 2018. This will be the film to get me in the seat. Can not wait!
Whether you liked this or not (I didn't), you will not regret that you saw it in theatre.
This movie will certainly feel very different seeing it at home on a small screen and without booming sound.
This movie is absolutely worth it.
Well, good to know the wait was worth it! Thanks again for being awesome as always, Toho! Can't wait to see this when it hopefully comes out here in Britain!
And now we wait for Legendary's turn...

I got the early access IMAX tickets for 11/29 for myself and my 3 kids. I'm 51, and I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas morning all over again.
"One of the most riveting & well-crafted movies you will ever see. A pinnacle of cinematic experience."
Every single person involved in this project deserves a standing ovation.

Makes you realize how far Hollywood has fallen if Toho can put out a movie THIS good with only 10% of the budget. Imagine what they could do with 20%!
