      Hello Chris. Thank you very much. I really enjoyed doing that video and may start doing them again in 2023. A lot of these accessory manufacturing companies just leave too much to the imagination making installation of their products sometimes frustrating. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Ron, thank you for all your help and taking the time to make this video. I have a tracker topper 14 and can't get access to put a nut on the bolt to secure or lock it in place. I will be solely reliant on screws to secure the mount for the seat. I thought about adding JBWeld as well as screws or even a toggle bolt type fastener but using a toggle bolt is not practical as the holes would be too large to get it in the hole. I may use the rails because it seems to be more secure or possibly cover the bench with plywood mounting the bracket prior to installing the plywood cover. Unfortunately my son and I are not the smallest guys and with the boat vibration over time I can see these screws coming loose or popping out. The other option would be to cut a access panel out of the side and remove some of the foam but I didn't really want to degrade the little bit of foam that was placed in the boat as a flotation safety feature. The higher the pedestal the more secure it needs to be . I have tried the clamp downs when I was younger and did not care for them. The video really helped give me ideas and options, if you could link the slider items on the post that would be terrific. Kind RegardsGary

    When using the Attwood slider system, you will find that the head of the bolt used to mount your seat or swivel to the aluminum slider plate will contact your boats surface causing damage.
    To eliminate this, use 1/4 20 stainless flat head bolts. Or use stainless carriage bolts and grind off about 1/8" off the head of the carriage bolt.
    Either solution will give you the required clearance to prevent damage to your boats bench seat or surface.

    • @rfknapik
      @rfknapik  Год назад

      Actually they are all over the net but for some reason hard to search for. You need the 33 inch set including the rails and slider base. Here is the Amazon listing.
      www.amazon.com/Wise-8WD73-Sure-Mount-Bracket/dp/B0000AXOYQ/ref=asc_df_B0000AXOYQ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312114712708&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14698536493655186530&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052778&hvtargid=pla-567204018856&psc=1
      I think if you search for jon boat seat slider, that should work. Both Attwood and Wise make the good ones. But remember you want the 33 inch and be careful, some sellers show the kit but sell the rails and the base slider individually to get more money. Hope this was helpful and thank you for watching my video.

    Use a Springfield Removable Seat Bracket with rivnuts set into the blind seat, then mount the Springfield Seat Swivel, 7" x 7" to the bottom of the seat. The rivnuts are used as blind nuts into the seat that is boxed in so you can not tighten a nut on the bolt.

    Great vid Ron. My question is do the #14 screws hold the seat secure enough to withstand the constant bouncing of the boat? The reason I ask is because I have a Lowe Line boat and need to secure some mounts to the seat and cannot get under the bench because of all the Styrofoam.

    • @rfknapik
      @rfknapik  9 лет назад +1

      joe c yes they will but give them the ability to have maximum hold by making sure you do the following.Use only stainless steel #14 pan head screws.Use #14 stainless washers under the screw heads.Always use the proper diameter drill bit for the screw size and material your mounting it into.
      This info can be found using Google. What drill bit size for screw size.
      For example, if your putting a stainless #14 screw into thin gauge aluminum you need to use a 3/16 drill bit. This is very important to get maximum screw holding power.

    Hi Ron; Because my rear seat is on one side of the boat I need to have the front passenger offset to the opposite side so the boat is balanced when underway.. I've been looking at the slider systems for installing a seat on the front aluminum bench seat of my Alumna-craft 16v. I noticed you used the Attwood brand slide system and was wondering if you prefer that to the Wise slide system or consider them to be of equal quality? Your video is very informative and a great value to the do it your self type of guy. On other thing I have been considering is when I have a slider system in place that I would use aluminum rivets in addition to the screws. Any comment on that. Thanks Dave Gulick

    Hey Ron, how do you stop the seat from sliding out off the slider when sitting on it? Is it a lock on the slider or on the swivel? I cant find any locking swivels. Thanks, great vid

    • @rfknapik
      @rfknapik  8 лет назад

      The swivel has nothing to do with preventing from sliding. Due to the design of the 30" slider and plate we use, the weight of you sitting on the seat prevents it from sliding from side to side.Any seat used in a boat that has a swivel attached to it when used at speeds over 5 miles per hour requires a locking swivel to prevent the seat from rotating uncontrolled and causing the person to be thrown from the seat. We use a WISE 12 position locking swivel. They are available all over the place. Just Google it.Ron

    Ron, nice video! I am currently using the sliding system in my Lowe 1648. I am happy with it but would like to be higher up on my seat. Is there a good way to put a pedestal system in this boat without too much cutting and drilling? I'd like to be about 12" above the bench seat like in the bass boat I had previously. Thanks for the great video!!

    • @rfknapik
      @rfknapik  10 лет назад +1

      Unfortunately there is not enough support in the aluminum seat to mount a pedestal. The only possibility would be to mount a 3/4" piece of plywood or King Starboard to the entire surface of the seat using oval head stainless machine screws. Then mound a pedestal to that. Use about 10 #12 or 14 size screws.
      Attwood make a 7" and 13" solid pedestal and then mount your swivel and seat on top of that.

      Also I saw Wise Seat Company makes a 33 inch set. Pt # Wise 8WD73. Saw them on special for under $60. Just make sure it includes the rails and the slider plate and specifies 33 inch. If you find something, send me the link and I will check it out.

      It depends what your mounting. You said rail. Our slider kits come with the hardware. The rails come with #8, self tapping pan head screws.
      You will use stainless, self tapping pan head screws for anything that you cant access the back side. For #8 screws use a 1/8" drill, for #10 use a 9/64, for #12 use a 11/64 or 3/16, and for a #14 screw use a 13/64" drill.

      It becomes a safety issue usually but at only 4 inches rise and using the correct size hardware you should be ok. Obviously make sure there is absolutely no structure weakness or dry rot if your mounting into wood. Use stainless hardware. If using pan head screws use #14's. If using machine screws with nuts use 1/4-20 and locking nuts if possible. Using stainless nuts with the nylon locking will be easier. If you can use flat washers, this will add additional support. Enjoy your new setup and have fun.

      After 53 years of experience I never ran into such a situation on any of the hundreds of aluminum boats I have sold or serviced including mine. You are apparently not familiar with the properties of MARINE GRADE aluminum and the grades of stainless hardware that are recommended for marine use. All aluminum boat manufacturers specify using high grade marine stainless hardware for mounting anything on their boats both above and below the waterline. It is also what all aluminum boat manufacturers use in their production. So, I have to advise my readers to IGNORE your warning and to use only high grade stainless hardware when mounting anything to there aluminum boats unless instructed differently by the items manufacturer.

    You can make your own if your in a hurry. Just buy 2 1/2 inch long 1/4 20 bolts and cut the heads off with a hack saw.
    If using just for an alignment tool just get regular bolts.(easier to cut) If using them for mounting, get stainless.
    You can also get 1/4 20 stainless rods at True Value hardware, to cut your own.
    But the easiest way is to just go to this link where you can buy stainless 1/4 20 studs in any length you want.

    screw to a bench? It will loosen.

      With all the seats, sliders and swivels that I have installed over 40 years I have had none that got loose. If you use cheap or small hadware they will. But I use premium grade #14 stainless pan head screws of a proper length based on what they are going through.

    Many aluminium boats have the rear bench running the other way along side the boat. How would you install a seat then ?

      People say some of these aren't comfy, and others are, depending on the FOAM

      MusicMusicMusic We only sell tow versions of seats made by WISE, even though they make several
      different grades. The problem is that the big box stores portray the cheap junk
      as not being cheap junk by not listing the entire model number. Some online
      merchants also do the same.
      We offer a low back that has decent comfort
      and most my customers feel the same way. We sell these seat discounted at $46.00
      and $43.70 for my boaters advantage members.
      If someone tells you they
      are selling the same seat for under $40, they are full of it.
      The high
      back we sell use a 2 density foam on sale for $65. While not the top of the line
      $89 seat, these high backs provide a high level of comfort along with long term
      durability against puddling and foam degradation. And my customers have given
      only good ratings on these.
      In my store we have one of each mounted on a
      floor stand with a swivel so customers can try them out for themselves and see
      the difference between the low back 1 density versus the high back 2 density and
      decide which way to go for their money.
      We also carry a tailored fitted
      seat with a lumbar support and 4 densities of foam. These seats are usually
      purchase by my customer who have bought a Starweld boat from me and have become
      spoiled by these seats and will not settle for less. Sale price on these seats
      is $350 each.
      You get what you pay for, but as I mentioned earlier, if
      big box stores or online stores say they can sell you the same for a lot less,
      they are pulling the wool over your eyes.

    You don't show any installation

      To keep these videos in perspective as to a persons ability to complete such an installation, I believe that a person needs the basic skills of drilling holes and using tools to take on such a project. For safety reasons, I do not wish to show how to handle drills, bits, power tools or any of the basic tools required.
