If there are no norms there are no expectations, and if there are no expectations then you cannot possibly set up a punchline or climax. This is why woke people are humorless and cannot write good stories.
I feel like old RPGs sometimes had political messages but they were well handled; something that you could only notice if you looked hard enough. Now I feel like the political message takes precedence over any other aspect of the game.
It's simple really. It wasn't heavy-handed and on-the-nose, and anytime you had a gay character or whatever show up, it usually was one of those "Just a thing with the character" as opposed to being the first thing you hear about 'em and it being the prmary personality trait. I miss those old days.
Games are in the hands of major corporations now, much like social media and public news, games are in the process of being fully converted into an apparatus for the diffusion of societal programming and propaganda diffusion. They still have to be games, but the game itself takes backseat to "the message".

The thing is that RPGs have always been this way. Fallout 2 lets you straight up be gay if you want and has always had heavy political themes. The difference now is that the politics in question are more front and center because people purposely look for those themes to be mad at them. Having random black characters annoys me as a black man because they almost never explain how he got there. It feels like inclusion just to check off a box for the PC overlords they answer to . "How did this African man end up in the middle of europe? Doesn't matter, REPRESENTATION".
Exactly. There should be a believable in-game reason for it and not just shoehorned in, or it just ruins the immersion.
It's just a game, it doesn't have to be that realistic and plus even if it was uncommon, there was Infact like a black knight
It's actually somewhat offensive since we all know why it was done. Yes, place the token black man in an Euro-centered medieval-Style game. No one has ever complained about the lack of European, South American or African Characters in a Yakuza game, because everyone knows how silly it would be to demand le representation.

Having social norms where certain classes of players play within certain set roles assists with roleplaying.
Remember FNV companions had their own sexual preferences, that set them apart from one another, but wasn't their defining trait. Then Fallout 4 comes along and, everyone is bi, homogeneous, and falls in love with you because you opened a locked door.
New Vegas is an absolute masterpiece. Bethesda will never be able to reach that level. Too bad they screwed over Obsidian, we would've had so much better Fallout games after FNV

Oh piss off with this New Vegas circle jerk!
Seriously NV has the worst fans of any RPG in the last decade. Bathesda saved the franchise. Fallout tactics was mid, FOBoS was total trash, the three failed attempts at a third game sucked, and then they wanted to double down on the exact systems that made BoS the dumpster fire that it was.
New Vegas was licensed by bathesda, funded by bathesda, made with bathesda assets, on a bathesda engine, with tons of resources and experience pulled in by BATHESDA. Even the friggin Obsidian devs said Bathesda was nothing but helpful when making the game. But what? Every single good thing about the game is some massive praise for Obsidian and every bad thing about it is "OmG BuGtHeSda!i!"
They've done good with the series. Yea, 4 doesn't feel like a fallout game and 76 USED to be trash. Yea, new Vegas was a great friggin game. But no, the absurd hatred for fallout 3 and 4 and the rediculous claim that it's somehow bathesda that ruined the franchise when you would have never heard the friggin name fallout without bathesda is unwarranted.
No I'm not some bathesda fanboy. I recognize every game they make starts off as a buggy fustercluck. But I'm sick of new Vegas fans taking this rediculous high and mighty rout as if new Vegas (a BATHESDA game) somehow had zero problems and was magically better than every other fallout in every way and that Obsidian is just this magically fantasy land that if you just dipped fallout into it than it would somehow come out perfect.
