Why call it imitation crab when in reality it’s fish cake
Because it resembles the meat from a crab leg. That said, I still like it in small doses but really wonder which is healthier, a fast food burger or imitation crab. I usually use it added to a salad so I'm guessing it's reasonably healthy eaten this way.

Imitation crab is definitely healthier. It’s pretty much just lean fish protein maybe some carbs depending if the brand you bought has added sugars or starch to the fish paste.
Fast food burgers have a lot more stuff that you should somewhat limit in you diet like saturated fats and simple carbohydrates from the buns. Of course like most things they’re fine in moderation.
Many oriental cuisine use it..they call it fish cake, but idk if the same as surimi

Marjo you clearly don’t know what fish cakes are, there’s already a term use for fish that are made in such a manner similar to how bologna sausages are made; it’s call fish cake. Go google asian fish cake; it shouldn’t be hard to do
FYI, the crab used in California Rolls is this imitation stuff. This is why it's usually the cheapest sushi option. You get what you pay for.

C P if you guys live in Harrisonburg like me I think you should go to this place near funkys besides you go the opposite way and you’ll see a place called Hokkaido and its a sushi buffet little less pricey than a restaurant and if your a parent that has a kid that don’t like seafood they have different stuff like zucchini with stake and rice corn dog nuggets and more but I like sushi if you see this you should try it out
According to the package about 3% crab meat and mostly a mixture of whatever types of fish is left over after the good cuts, salt, water, and maybe a preservative or two. It’s basically the hotdog of the seafood world.

They just mean people who are intolerant could order it, thinking they are fine, and then get f'd up badly uknowingly . It'd be the same case of it potentially containing peanuts or smthing. There isn't any warning, from my experience

Imitation crab meat is inexpensive, taste great and in a salad with lettuce, tomato, grn onion , avocado, hard boiled egg and my wife's home made dressing is a treat for me to eat. BTW; the quality of taste and texture varies by brand

Some people develop shellfish allergies randomly, like I did one day when eating shrimp, same thing happened to my sister, we can no longer have shrimp/lobster/crab, so having the imitation stuff as an option is pretty nifty

In England, when I was younger. they were called crab sticks; last decade they've been called seafood sticks! They're considered longlife chill items at UK superkarkets, I.e same delivery as cheese and yoghurt etc...

It isn't bad in a salad and take it from a crab fisherman, it's a bunch easier to use then the real thing. I made real crab stuffed mushrooms for Xmas. I took the meat out of three crabs. What a pain in the ass. I finally got good at it but for things like salads or hors-d'oeuvres I will simply buy canned crab meat.
When I made crab cakes I used real crab and picking the meat out was pain in the ass.........but it was worth it.
Some packages say “may contain crab meat”. That always struck me as odd.
They add random fish and seafood, and small portions of real crab might be one of them. The stupid thing about it though is that a lot of people who love imitation crab eat it specifically because we're allergic to real crab meat. So don't add any to it!!

Back in the 1970's my I talked my mother into buying fake crab. It messed up my whole perspective on crab meat. Once I became an adult, I then learned that crabmeat is the best tasting of all of the crustaceans.

Crazy, I just asked this question 3 days ago, as I was eating "crab" dip.
Anytime I go to the Picadilly Restaurant, I have the 'seafood salad'. It has a little minced onion, celery, mayo and lemon juice, served on a bed of lettuce. It's delicious. Occasionally I make it at home. I guess if we could see how a lot of items we eat are prepared and packaged, like hot dogs, it would turn our stomachs. I try not to think about it and just eat it!😁

I love imitation crab. When I have leftover Yorkshire puddings (which I make a lot) I make ‘Lobster’ Newburg with it. Basically a roux with a milk sauce with a touch of sherry. Delicious over Yorkshire puddings.

I was a taiwan visiting very extended family members (like dad's cousins or 2nd cousins) and they had real crab ontop with some sort of tofu cake that was so similar to crab meat, down to the stringy texture. It was obviously not really crab meat cuz it filled the whole bottom of the plate. I remember there was a chinese snack/meal thing that grandma used to make, but it didnt taste like seafood.
To be honest, i like the taste of imitation crab more than actual crab.
