I always love seeing Vegas Vic, and I wish they would restore his voice again. That MGM fire was awful. Even today they talk of seeing ghosts on the casino floor. Wow...crazy that no one was evacuated. No smoke detectors and no sprinkler system - that was crazy. Wow...I never knew about the Hilton fire. That Grand Prix race in 1981 was not on the strip, and it needs to be taken off the strip - there is plenty of places where they could put the F1 track. I love these old Vegas commercials. That explosion was so huge....I cannot believe there were not more casualties. My classmate Stanford Jennings ran the kickoff back for a touchdown in 1989. We played football together in Summerville, South Carolina. I remember watching some of those motorcycle jumps! Absolutely great video!
Fremont Street Experience could have Vegas Vic welcome everyone just before the first canopy begins every night. That would get more people on Fremont Street earlier in the night to be able to hear his voice.
Great video. Ty for posting. My first year in Vegas was 1980 so saw all these places as I have been back almost every year since then. Still liked the old Vegas better..
Most welcome. My first year was 1981 and the Strip was all about the neon lights, not the architecture. The old Vegas is an era locked in time never to return.
Summer of 79 I took a bus from Baltimore Maryland 17 teen years old 5 days on a Greyhound bus . I arrived at the Lady Luck Casino in downtown Las Vegas . It was like a whole different world! Wow the feelings just thinking back gives goosebumps it was that great. Talk about expanding my world I totally love it. And I could go on and on about my life as Las Vegas residents for the next 20+years.
The company I retired from recently built all of Vegas' big structures from the 80s till now.. the Raiders stadium was just getting started when I retired and they later built the sphere.
That was some great footage. That MGM fire was awful. There was a couple from my hometown here that was in there when that fire happened and had to get helicoptered down. That couple have both passed away years ago, but I k ew them and remember them talking about that.
The couple must have been scared and lucky because some of the helicopters were from Nellis Air Force base and were available because the helicopters were doing some training already.
@@VegasVisual I remember them saying they were scared to death. At the time that happened in the 80,s this couple would have been around 70 years old. Very scary of them.
Excellent video of Vegas History. Vegas history can be divided into 4 eras: the founding/ cowboy era, mafia post WWII boom, Howard Hughes/ 1980s decline, & the 1990s 21st century corporate renaissance
I lived in Las Vegas at the time at maryland Pkwy and Tropicana Ave about two miles from the MGM grand casino. And had no idea that it could change the safety us all

fantastic video and resource. I know it's a long shot to ask creators this, but would you know any resources or places that might speak to the AIDS crisis or queer scene in Vegas around this time? I'm trying to dig into it, but unfortunately, a lot of it has been lost and buried. I figured maybe in your research you've seen something? If not that's totally great. Fantastic video!
Thank you. Over the years researching different Vegas topics I usually run into other information from other topics here and there but I haven't seen any mention of the AIDs crisis or queer scene in Vegas.
Hey VV, wonderful and informative. No one scares easily now. I don’t think anyone would stay away from Vegas. Sad about the fires & I bet the regulations for building a casino are tougher. Wynn is so creepy, I never liked him 😝. The Dan Tanna-Vegas detective show, kept everyone excited about Vegas. It was an awesome 1977-1978 show, filmed at Desert Inn. 👍🤠.
Escaping to the hotel roof, wow, that seems like a crazy idea today, especially after 9/11. But it worked in 1980, they were rescued by helicopter. Though I guess if the floors below you are consumed with flames, you really have no choice but to go up.
There's not a man alive today with the balls enough to attempt to do what Robbie Knievel did under the same Circumstances he did in 1989 at Caesars Palace
In retrospect and with adult judgement: Evel Kneivel was a horrific public " hero" - I agree Robbie - knowing what the Caesars jump did to his father- surpassed his fathers "ballsiness" by attempting it again. ( with a much better bike and some engineering support to mathematically prove out his moves- with success)
Robbie was a joke, Evel did that shit on a 20000 pound bike with two crack heads building his ramp out of plywood. Robbie did it on what would still be considered a modern bike now and had nasa rocket scientists and math wizards making his ramps to perfection. That is why Evel was abel to get national tv and radio attention without a pr team backing him and robbie hardly even made the evening news
14:30 Land swap with BLM in 1988? Howard Hughes Co did a swap with the Dept. of Interior for much of what is Summerlin in 1953. This is worth knowing because the swap was heavily in Hughes' favor, and the petition was pushed through in the name of national security because he was to built an aircraft facility, which never happened.
@@jeffersonjank I mention the 1953 land swap between Howard Hughes and the government in the 1950's video: ruclips.net/video/VNmCLj_rGqA/видео.htmlsi=BwEtrew1ZhUo1S4B I probably should have briefly mentioned the 1953 land swap in this video (1980's) because people might assume that there was only one land swap in 1988. The Howard Hughes Company also got some Summerlin land from the City of Las Vegas in the 1980's or 1990's.
WOW! Nothings ever really new in Vegas. Feels like alot of things Vegas is trying to do today with sports teams, F1 and casinos was going on 40 years ago.👀
The Mirage had to happen, otherwise Vegas would have become another Atlantic City. Nowadays AC is just a godforsaken dump. Basically Baltimore with casinos.

I just left AC I stayed at the Hard Rock on the Boardwalk but I also took the Jitney to the Bogota casino. The weather was perfect and I had a great time. I know that it's in the triple digits in Vegas right now too hot for my blood. 😂
Disgruntled gamblers will get revenge for losing their money. One way or another. I found that city to be the most dangerous place I personally have ever been. Vegas was probably less than half the size, then that it currently is. There's no way to prepare for someone who has lost everything and unfortunately want retribution.
@VegasVisual In 1984, I called my mother in Washington state, and I told her I needed to get out of there. It was just too dangerous. I also saw the SAHARA burn. Disgruntled gamblers, Vegas doesn't identify them until it's much too late. There in lies the problem.
