This question doesn't have to do with this video. I wanted to know what software you use when designing furniture. Also, would love to see a video about how you go about planning a project from start to finish using that software. Bought several of your plans and would love to learn how to make some of my own. thanks!
I have the Hercules sander and used it for 6 hours straight sanding fuzzy cedar fence planks w/ 80 grit and back over with 180 grit. I only used 2 discs of each grit the entire time. I didn’t notice any hand fatigue or clogging. I did however use the Hercules discs with the holes lined up and my arm did start to get a little tired after a few hours into sanding. I was very impressed with it myself.
I have the Hercules sander and I absolutely love it. I have it hooked up to my shop vac with no dust collection issues. I use Diablo sand paper and it annihilates everything I put it to.
I've had two of the Bauer corded sanders for a couple years and just got a 20 volt one a few weeks ago. You can get the corded for $20 periodically and it is a steal. I've had no trouble and used them a lot. As for the power concern? I'm not sure why you would ever want to put enough pressure to bog that down? Fatigue? I've used them for multiple hours without issue. I rarely use the dust box because I hook them up to vac. Highly recommend. Bargain.
I purchased the Hercules as a throw away to use on a project that would destroy the pad in a few hours. So far, very impressed for the money. Running the Bauer 60grit, I’ve removed a small boat bottom’s worth of marine paint in an afternoon. I was able to 3d print an adapter to my festool ct. I’ve got about 3 hours work to go, so far so great
I really appreciate this review. Not alot of people are doing large scale budget corded tool reviews... especially on sanders since battery sanders have come around. This was comprehensive, and easy to watch and understand. 10/10 would watch again.
Hey Matt, great video my friend! Also I wanted to say. I have and use the Milwaukee M18, battery powered sander. And i find everything you mentioned about the corded Milwaukee sander, carries true with the battery sander as well! Just wanted to let you and others that read the comments know! Nice work, and all around fun video to watch. Take care, and be safe partner. Until next time.
I have that Skil ROS you tested. Love it!! I don't use the dust collection. I generally use a shop-vac or nothing at all so can't vouch for the attachment that came with it. It's in a drawer somewhere, still lookin brand new! I can sand for a long period of time with it and never notice any fatigue. Never noticed any great heat build up or dust build up either. Probably because I'm not using the included dust collection system. Yeah...the velcro is great, IMO, for this sander. Even after about 2+ years it still holds up very well! If (when?) it goes out, I may buy another one simply because it works for me. Or I may venture onto the Milwaukee bandwagon just to try it out. Thanks for the extensive testing Matt!! As always, we appreciate your efforts!!
I have the Hercules sander and after about 8 months today I realized that there is a second way of taking the bag off so that there is a circular port that my shop vac hose fits into perfectly.
I have the Bauer, hard to pass up at $20 on sale, and while it seems "underpowered", I don't ever really find that I have to apply any pressure when using 3M Cubitron Xtract II sandpaper, the weight of the sander does all of the work for me. I do agree that the regular dust collection is quite bad, but if you remove the dust collector housing, there is a vacuum port, and when attached to a vacuum, dust collection is very good. One area it could be better is vibration, but it's nowhere near as bad as some of the old porter cable sanders and polishers I've used, and I haven't had any issues with numbness or anything like with those older sanders.
Great hands-on reviews. I have a Bosch and a 3M sander. The Bosch is a finesse sander and is not really a "workhorse". It is great when used for fine sanding. I needed to do some architectual sanding and bought the Bauer after seeing tons of glowing RUclips reviews. I had not purchased a Harbor Freight power tool for decades due to quality issues. That thing shook like a freight train and sanding discs didn't cling to it at all. It flung the discs all over. I tried several brands and grits, but nothing worked. I threw it in the trash after 3 or 4 hours of total frustration. I went to HD, bought a Dewalt and finished the job. Lesson learned, again.
I'm sad to see the Makita w/handle shock you, I've had that sander for years, never been shocked, curious maybe if you got a defective product, I absolutely love mine, the stick & peel test was interesting I would like to see that test done on multi tool sanding adapters, I'm having that issue now with my Milwaukee oscillating tool, sand paper don't stick well, thank you
Excellent analysis of Sanders. Gave me all the information I needed to make a decision. Keep up the excellent work. I check your site almost every day. I also support your channel. You give me accurate information and save me money.
Fun fact, whenever you read Craftsman, just say Stanley in your head, yes, stanley, the owner of Dewalt, under that brand they usually release older versions of dewalt tools, I don't know why Stanley releases their gear under the name Craftsman in the US, but here in Europe they do under the name Stanley. But the hierarchy stands for both markets, so black and decker, Craftsman/stanley and deWalt, more or less a parallel with ryobi, rigid/AEG, and Milwaukee, yes yes, I know rigid/AEG are only produced by TTI and not owned by them. Edit: After a bit of research, Stanley/Black+Decker aquired the brand Craftsman some time ago, so I'd guess is just a marketing strategy to releases the same tools in Europe and teh US under different names, since here in Europe the brand Craftsman wasn't really widespread at all
"I know rigid/AEG are only produced by TTI and not owned by them." This is partially incorrect. AEG is owned by TTI. AEG is not sold in North America. It appears TTI rebrands certain AEG products under the Ridgid name for sale in North America.
Thank you for this almost comprehensive coverage of these tools. As someone looking to upgrade from my first sander the only other channel putting this kind of stuff is Project Farm.
Nice video and comparison. My Dewalt started dying today after many years of hard work on carbon fiber panels and wood working. I went to Google to look for an alternative and looks like I am replacing my Dewalt with another Dewalt. Thanks for all you do for the community!
Curious if you got a lemon on the Hercules. I have one and use it almost daily. Mine is smooth as butter. Agree on dust collection though but its good with a vac on it. Thanks for the video
I have a Hercules as well. I have had it for about three years. Not crazy on the dust collection. But it runs great and leaves a nice finish. Your not a woodworker if you don’t eat a little sawdust… lol
I used to have a Bosch sander several years ago, and used it for a good 10 years till it finally "failed".. it was a GREAT sander. I currently have a Bauer, and not my fav but this review has taken me to either the Milwalkie or the Craftsman, and the Craftsman surprised me in this review.
I've had the Bosch V20 variable speed ROS for several years. Home Depot has it on special for $59 right now including a soft bag and they do that sale pretty often. It is a workhorse though I'm not a fan of the included dust collection/capture systems on any ROS since I don't want to have to stop sanding to dump that out. I added the Rockler Dust Right hose and flexible adapter kit to it and ran it to my mini cyclone/shop vac and it is really efficient in removing the dust and preventing clogs.
The "shocking" Makita... there must be something wrong. We have 4 of these in the shop and they all work very well and I have never had a shock from it. Its a bit noisy but a really good sander
Great video, thanks for posting! Was in the market to replace an old palm sander. Have some food for thought now. Also, love those great message shirts 🙏👍
Just had a black and decker BDER0600, palm sander for about 8 years and it’s about done, I was sanding my wood shed and it is struggling, overheating and slowing down. It’s been a real trooper but time for an upgrade
I have this very Makita sander model that gave you shocks. I have not experienced an electrical shock with it but I do work standing on concrete. What could prevent a shock ... like standing on a thick rubber pad? Running the extension cord off a surge protector? Thank you!
I was concerned when I first bought the Bosch because it seemed so underpowered and I heard nothing but great things as well. However I will say, since, I have learned how to use it to ITS best ability and you basically apply little to no pressure and using the 3M paper, it works fantastically. I will say though I haven’t tried the DeWalt and I really do want to give that one a try since everything else I have is DeWalt and I’ve had a great time with all of it.
@@ThePuterdoc It literally states in the instruction manual not to apply pressure, so if you do then you can't really blame the tool for not performing well
One of, if not the best tool review i've ever seen.. a lot of data laid out in a way that it's easy to see what's best for you.. attention to detail.. i'll sub and see what all you got going on.. all because of this one video.. i usually check a few out. but i think this is solid.. thanks..
Great review...I kept waiting for the 3M (or Festool/Mirka) to make an appearance in the back of the class. After your review of the 3M and watching many other reviews, I went with it from TayTools and love it! Now the Ridgid and Ryobi only come out when the Scouts or others need to sand something (while hiding my 3M).
This video autoplayed for me. My next sander is the festool ETS EC 150/3. I have the rotex. It is astounding. But I would like more finesse. My current plan is to use it on 180 grit and higher. I have a countertop refinishing job coming up that is going to pay for it.
Not a woodworker, but building a bunch a raised beds. I have some hand issues and my cordless sander kills my hands. Thanks for your detailed video, very helpful finding a new sander.
What’s up!!! I’m a new woodworker and I’m greatly appreciating your review videos. I’ve become addicted big time to woodworking. I bought the craftsman sander today. Haven’t used it yet but definitely ready to get away from my Hyper Tough I’ve been using.
amazing video covered sooo much about the tools. Much appreciate it. On the market for a new sander, and I feel like im falling into the "Brand Loyalty" with the DeWalt tools... but glad to see there a good choice. Off to the Home Depot tomorrow
Thanks...I needed this. I have had that Bosch sander for a few years, and I'm disappointed in how it dances all over the work. So I'm looking to replace it. Lots of good info here, although I was a little disappointed that you left out an analysis in how well they, ummm, sanded. You know: does it leave pigtails in the wood, how quickly does it remove the wood, etc. Can't have everything, I guess. I would not have thought to include a drop test, which is silly because I'm extremely likely to drop these things. Off to get me a Yellow sander, and some of them Bessey clamps so I can clamp up the panels I'm sanding. Thanks!
I have had the milwakee for around 3 years now and it has been very good, only complaint is the dust box, after a while the lid didn't stick on so i put rubber bands on it. It's still going stroing and i would definetly recomend!
Don't know that I've ever mentioned it to you, but I work with (or maybe work around) having carpal tunnel in both of my wrists/hands. As heavy duty body repair man, which also encompasses much of being a heavy duty mechanic by default, hand- fatigue is no joke. I've got 2 battery powered Ryobi hand sanders in my shop currently, looking to add a corded version of some one's sander because neither Ryobi sander is brushless or variable speed and my oh my do they have an appetite for fully charged batteries. Either sander can almost deplete a 3 or 4Ah HP battery in 10-15minutes of continuous use. If they'd spent 0.35¢ more per unit, they could've made much nicer sander by giving them variable speed triggers, an additional speed selection switch. Being that I currently don't have a Miter Saw, or a Table Saw, or a building with roof to put them in, I'm working only on smaller projects that I produce with relative ease, and hopefully, in sufficient numbers to work up to that stage as I grow and learn and relearn. I guess what I'm trying to say is thanks for video because it'll help me decide on "buy once, cry once", or "good enough for right now" sanders. Thanks for including the under powered "maybe ok for small projects, but currently not for larger furniture or other big stuff.
I have to wonder if it’s a manufacturing grounding issue. Or another variable issue because of the shocking.. static electricity. We had a garbage disposal that If you touched the chrome trim on the sink you would feel a tingle…
Hi Mathew 😊 here's a possibly stupid question but as to the sanding side of things i.e. removing material, how much of a difference does it make between a real cheap sander and say something around the dewalt level, thanks Mathew 😊 Geoff
Thanks for taking the time and performing a best of sanders. I have been in the market and this will definitely help in my decision. Just an FYI if you didn't know, BLACK and DECKER also owns DeWalt and Craftsman as well as Mac Tools, that's why they both look the same.
Surprising result, I've had the smaller Makita for decades (the older BO5010 model I have is essentially identical to the newer ones) and been very happy with it, just recently replaced the motor brushes.... but I have to admit, the dust collection is not stellar, even with a shop vac hooked up. I've heard the DeWalt is really good, I'd like to go try one out but I don't really have any excuse to replace the old sander :) . Also surprising is the Bosch, I have a few corded Bosch tools (jigsaw, router, drill) and they are superb.
I have the Rigid and the Hercules sanders and like both, however, the Hercules is my favorite and it has more power. The weight is not a problem since I'm not carrying it around when using
Matt, I have the battery powered Ryobi. It's a battery hog. 45mins on a 3Ah. And if you think the corded version is top heavy, the bigger the battery, the more top heavy this platform will be. I really wouldn't want a battery powered sander unless the cord made the impossible, and then, I wouldn't want that sander to be in Ryobi platform. I've got other Ryobi stuff I like just fine. I've got the Ryobi cat-fish-sander, and I like it much better. The balance is different. I'd still much variable speed (how much is a switch and a little more wiring. That could change how feel about the Ryobi sander. I mean that not every job requires, nor is it desirable to run the tool Wide-Open, All-The-Time.!
what a surprise Milwaukee wins 🤦♀️🤷🏼♀️ i had Ryobi it packed up after a year, replaced it and that one died. had a bosch (green not blue) & it did well. moved to Hikoki (metabo is US) and no issues with their corded 5”, corded 6” (absolute beast and very good on sanding, vibration etc) and i have the cordless 5” and works well.
Completely different experiences with the Bosch and Makita #1... have had the Makita for 5 yrs and it's been my workhorse, zero complaints... got the Boach a year or so ago and instantly loved it, just so smooth and easy... granted it's not the workhorse the Makita is, it's more of a finisher. Also have the Ryobi cordlss version (it's been on the shelf since I bought it) as well as Makita 1/4 sheet and Dewalt 1/4 sheet (note this is 3rd Dewalt, the first 2 just plain quit working within a week)
Interesting about the Bosch, I forgot to turn on my DE and I didn’t even notice, the dust just sat in the hose until I turned it on. I did notice that if my technique is off it will leave swirls. I was used to their version of the rotex, I literally have to try and get swirls with that thing. If they could put that quality into a palm sander, I’d be a happy man.
That hercules sander got a big head cramps my hand something fierce. I always use one hand right above the base and the other near the tail end by the cord. The dewalt is the best for tiny people like me.
I have a Herc and I am experiencing grabbing of the wood even though i sand off pencil marks and am using 3M paper. Any Ideas? I am not putting much pressure on it at all.
I am confused on the Hercules. On the website, it says it includes adapters for a shop vac? Did yours not include any? And, for less hand fatigue for a DIY/hobbyist... is it in your opinion worth just skipping this level and going for mid level bosch, festool or even 3m? Using a shop-vac for the time. Thanks!
yeah I noticed the same thing when you compared sanding with an extractor and without. I was sanding stain and finish off some boards and I was using a vac. I forgot to check the filter on the vac and it needed a clean. Before cleaning my Rotex in geared mode, it would go through paper very quickly and get major caking. After I cleaned the filter of the vac one piece of paper did the same work of many other pieces of paper and did it in less time.
I have a Hercules hooked up to my shopvac at home. I use a Festool with fancyvac at the shop I share. The Festool is better...obvi. The Hercules is really good when one considers it's a set up that costs LESS THAN $100.
I'm at a loss to understand what pain and fatigue one experiences from using any ROS. I have an infected forefinger on my dominant hand from plywood splinters. Nevertheless, this weekend I sanded twelve 38" stair treads and thirteen risers with the Bauer. It took about an hour without breaks, and had no issues with discomfort nor fatigue.
Another great video, thank you I have been using random orbit sanders for years and have never found the variable speed useful at all. Have had 2 6” sanders would definitely recommend the 6” ones the 5” in most cases as they are perform significantly better but are larger and heavier.
I prefer these types of usage testing over the bot testing, because I think it’s more inline with how I use the tool. I have the rigid sander and I would agree with where you placed it. It did great before I hooked it up to my shop vac, and even better after using sand net and shop vac. My hyper tough died after a few months of minimal use. Thanks for the video.
this was fantastic you really took the time to do all of this is amazing. im starting to collect tools to do various things after purchasing my second home. so stuff like this really means alot. thank you. EDIT: Also extra points for not being afraid to show you follow Jesus.
I love that you tested a bunch of different brands! Even though some are pretty much the same bc they’re made in the same factory or by the same company. It’s still nice to know. And I like that you had a few different relevant tests. This video actually helped me narrow in my pick. Thank you Mr. 731!
Enjoy these types of videos, love that you included Craftsman, I have had the corded and battery powered units for about two years now. With dust collection and good quality sandpaper, I get good results. Great job Matt.
For what its worth I purchased a bauer cordless sander this summer to paint my van as I didn't want to run my monster compressor or destroy my old Porter Cable quicksand and I as I didn't want to spend much as I figured bodyshop dust would destroy it but the van is done and it is still going strong and i think I gave less then 30.00 bucks for it an run it on my Milwaukee m18 batteries

Well you helped make up my mind after being on the fence for a while. Going the DeWalt and I don't think I will have any problems with it.
Any chance you could do a review on the Bosch ROS20VSC instead of their bottom-end sander that was in this video (ROS10)?

Curious if you got a lemon on the Hercules. I have one and use it almost daily. Mine is smooth as butter. Agree on dust collection though but its good with a vac on it. Thanks for the video
I have a Hercules as well. I have had it for about three years. Not crazy on the dust collection. But it runs great and leaves a nice finish.
Your not a woodworker if you don’t eat a little sawdust… lol
@@bret_LambkyI heard hooked to a shop vac it had extremely good dust collection
I have to say a big thank you for helping me with the RO Sander buying decision. Cheers.
I own Makita 1. Never had an issue with with is shocking me. I like the handle as I can switch ways to hold the sander reducing fatigue.
Same here
Same here, it's a very comfortable sander to use and performs very well overall. I have never been shocked by it.
The "shocking" Makita... there must be something wrong. We have 4 of these in the shop and they all work very well and I have never had a shock from it. Its a bit noisy but a really good sander
I also have that Makita that doesn't shock the user.
He definitely had a defective one and should've taken it back
I like
Makita tools. Nice color. Would be nice to get more tools in blue. Too much red
Thank you!
I bought the Hercules and honestly it did amazing on dust collection. It did get a bit warm tho, but I was using it pretty hard.
Hercules new tools are pro grade tools
@@leafybug04I'm looking at getting everything hercules when I start my furniture making business (outside of jointer they don't have one 😔)
Black and Decker own DeWalt and Craftsman.
A lot of parts are the same.
They keep the batteries different to keep the tools different.
Wow. This is an amazing review. Thanks a bunch !!
Hello, what 2”/3” electrical orbital sanding disc would you recommend? Thanks for the reviews. I will go with the Dewalt brand for the 5”/6”.
I've had the Ridgid sander for several years. It performs very well with the included dust bag. It does even better when connected to a vacuum.
100% agree. If you let it float on it's own weight, it's a beast
@@ThePuterdoc It literally states in the instruction manual not to apply pressure, so if you do then you can't really blame the tool for not performing well
Great Video and test. I was thinking i wanted go craftsman since all my other tools are and you just confirmed that decision. Thanks.
Need a Surfprep, Maxxt, Festool 150, 3m, Mirka orbital sander review video 🙏
Thanks!
Have a skil one, i use it with a shop vac so I have no problems with that dust bag. Affordable and good enough sander for most people highly recommend
I have the same watch bands but for galaxy5. Very comfortable and easy to put on.
I've been using the Makita with a handle for a few years now and have had no issues. What did you mean it shocked you?
Thanks for the review man. Had been looking to pick up a new one and this review really helped. Thanks again!
Thanks!
Thank you Phillip!
My Bosch finally went to pot on me today. Got a HF 1.5 miles from me so I’m trying out the 3 amp Hercules an while it is heavy I like it so far.
Great review, thank you. He is risen indeed! :)
Exactly what I was looking for. Great review, thank you!
Nice. A bit of user error on the Skil, the canister is supposed to be seated horizontally (logo facing up) and pressed further onto the dust port.
Agreed, I used the Skil for 2 years after I got it on sale at a Menards and it was better than my craftsman and the same metabo
Do you prefer corded or cordless my porter cable just shot craps I have dewalt 20 volt and Milwaukee m18
Thanks!
Have you ever reviewed the 3m sanders? If not I’d like to see it.
Yes I have. Here’s the link ruclips.net/video/xjeWACxBdM0/видео.htmlsi=Y94oUKKymmVn0TdS
@@731Woodworks Thank you! Have a great weekend!!!
yeah I noticed the same thing when you compared sanding with an extractor and without.
In the graph, is high good or bad on the bar chart?
Love my porter cable.
Dobré vědět 👍. (BOSCH mám jako No.1 přes 40 let, tak je fajn vidět kde mají ještě rezervy)
Except for the dust collector which I don't mind sanding with outdoors. The skil is great paid 29$ for mine. Cheapest variable speed sander too
It seemed like the DeWalt and Makita had a lot more dust in the bag when you dumped it out. Did they actually remove more material?
I’ve had a dewalt orbit sander it’s been great for me. Also did you get a new truck? Nice looking Chevy in the driveway
I like the 6 inch Ridgid sander and 5
Inch Milwaukee electric 5 inch
Any of these for sale from you? Im looking for a corded sander, batteries dont last long enough
I work in a woodshop. I burn one of these sanders up every 2 months. I do a lot of sanding. Have used most of these. The DeWalt lasted the longest.
🥇
Lucky. Don't overdo it or you may trigger a condition that will never 100% go away.
I bought a porter cable brand about 5 years ago and its been good for a cheaper one. Think I only gave 40 bucks for it at the time.
Another great video, thank you
I have been using random orbit sanders for years and have never found the variable speed useful at all.
Have had 2 6” sanders would definitely recommend the 6” ones the 5” in most cases as they are perform significantly better but are larger and heavier.
Agree
I prefer these types of usage testing over the bot testing, because I think it’s more inline with how I use the tool.
I have the rigid sander and I would agree with where you placed it. It did great before I hooked it up to my shop vac, and even better after using sand net and shop vac. My hyper tough died after a few months of minimal use. Thanks for the video.
Do you think the battery Dewalt would perform the same as the corded?
Great video as always. I love the time and energy you put into such a thorough testing of a wife variety of products!~
Excellent review- thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks! This was very helpful 💯
this was fantastic you really took the time to do all of this is amazing. im starting to collect tools to do various things after purchasing my second home. so stuff like this really means alot.
Always love seeing that Milwaukee at the top 😂😂😂
Dang, I bought the Dewalt about a week ago. Might want to go back and get the craftsman due to it being the same Sander
