  • I picked up a Common Mode Current Choke Test Rig from Halibut Electronics (electronics.halibut.com/produ...) during Hamvention 2023. It is about time I put this together.

Credit where credit is due dude. You know how to make that NanoVNA dance like no other. Hit Smitty up, $59+Shipping and you can get your very own kit. :)

To be fair to ABR (who make great cables, BTW). That choke you have with the 5 beads, is probably optimized for VHF and UHF. Parasitic capacitance is a much bigger problem at higher frequencies, so keeping your choke linear and not looping the cable, makes it perform much better at higher frequencies.

I wondered why the first big choke did not perform as well at the higher frequencies.

Yep. Choking at HF has many more options than VHF/UHF. I’m working on a product now that needs a CMCC at VHF/UHF, so I’m learning ALL ABOUT this. :-)

I mean even if it is -20dB of choking with 5 ferrites it is still a lot more than I would get without them. I think that their product clearly works based on what the nanoVNA shows.

@@LifeAtTerminalVelocity Exactly. Some choking is WAY BETTER than no choking.
