Not sure if the Chaos Emeralds were ever in the games. But they are the main McGuffins in Sonic X. A show I know you never saw. Which you should. Anime Sonic is super cool.
I could not watch the Sonic Boom cartoon because of stupid Knuckles. That was not how he was portrayed in the comics. This movie did a good job, even if his voice seemed a little deep for someone basically Sonic’s age
@@aught2be859 I've heard 14 year old's with deeper voices that Idris Elba; if anything, Elba's voice acting was dead on, and felt like he wasn't speaking to the air... like Sonic's voice.
This is actually a really solid format for Doug's solo reviews. The lighting is solid, the positioning leaving little negative space with a gag in the background... I dig it. It's a good set-up.
@@AlexRN It's more because I like it when Doug puts in effort. When Doug himself puts everything in the effort, it really shows. It's small for actions and how quick it is to do it, but creating the perfect space is what makes a good set. It's a small thing that can lead to a bigger joke or concept. Doug's always been a more animation-like person and to see him branch out to owning it is really cool. He has fun. Isn't that what entertainment is supposed to be? Entertaining?
Knuckles basically being the animal version of Drax was exactly what I thought he should be like and was a really good choice. The whole dot scene caused me to bust a gut. My favorite character in the film.
I really want them to use the “I’m the ultimate life form” line so I can laugh my ass off in the cinema. To be fair I laughed at the film quite a bit for the second one for the absurdity of it all. Actually took the time to go to the toilet during the wedding scenes because that was when it was getting real bad.
I like that they showcased SONIC ANIMATED show references here. They didn't keep it to just the games. Sonic vs Knuckles where he kept dodging in the temple? Straight from Sonic X. Sonic at the top of the tree taunting Eggman? Straight from Sonic X. Sonic sliding on top of the truck after the baseball game they have? Straight from Sonic Boom. Yes. They used the "Yes" meme of Sonic sliding in this movie. It's awesome. And the best part is it feels natural, rather than shoved in.
jesus that wedding scene had me absolutely howling, the part where the priest opens his book to reveal the (SPOILER) inside sent my friend into a complete fit
This movie literally made me feel like a kid again to the point where I let out happy tears. I’m a 00s kid so the Sonic I grew up with was anything from 2003 and onwards. I adored how this movie takes a lot from both the classic games and especially the Adventure series. Knuckles has always been one of my top three favorite characters in the series and he’s such a badass in this! For the longest time, we had to deal with dumb jock Knuckles from Sonic Boom. So much respect to Idris Elba. Easily the best Knuckles in a while IMO. He stole the movie for me. I’m planning on seeing it again with my kid brothers.
A badass Knuckles voiced by Idris Elba is a very large part of why I'm excited to watch the movie, so that's great to hear. It'll be sort of a family get-together in a week and I think it's gonna be great!
I remember watching Sonic X when I was kid, a little later then I found that Adventure 2 game exist, back then i though that this game was base on Shadow arc from Sonic x
7:28 "Why would Sonic know who Oprah is?" He grew up by himself listening and watching 90's stuff in a cave. Dude was even using a cassette player in the first one.
@@AreteG It would have been better if the human character (forgot his name) asked how he knew who that was and then they could have some kind of joke explaining that
Fun fact: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was Idris Elba's fourth voice-over role, after Zootopia (2016), The Jungle Book (2016) and Finding Dory (2016), All 3 features were Disney films, making this his first non-Disney voice role, in addition to being his 2nd time doing voice over work in a live-action film.
I think the reason why the sonic movies work so well (more so with 2 then 1) is because the writers and director understands their audience, by that I mean that they go on the assumption that those who actually see it are going to have some understanding on Sonic. Other video game movies usually miss this mark and try to explain the characters in it so "everyone" can enjoy them, and therefore, nobody does. Also I'm so happy that Sonic beat Mario to something, and that's make a decent movie.
As much as I like that too. But I Don't think the Mario movie was the worst. It was the first but sadly Hollywood hasn't learned much when it comes to adapting video games to movies. I do hope the new Mario movie does well, but I still like Sonic 2 to break a new record and keep Mario below that. None the less, it be awesome to see a cross over with them teaming up to fight a gaint robotized Bower under Eggman control.
Not just video games but movies based on existing IP's as well. For example the President of the US joke in the Simpsons Movie. Instead of it being the Simpsons parody of Arnold, they just have him be Arnold while using Wolfcastles model. So some of the jokes that are designed to be directed to fans are missed because they pander to general audiences instead.
@@jordanread5829 Huh, I was under the impression like Arnold irl becoming governor of CA, Wolf did the same but on a bigger scale as the president. As fans would know who he is.
Fun thing is: Even if you are not a Sonic Fan, these films are still fun. I never played any Sonic games in my life and I still had a ball at both movies and could follow them well enough. Even if there were probably many in-jokes and Easter Eggs I missed.
I can't believe the second Sonic movie is already out. It feels like the first one just came out. Damn the pandemic really made it feel like the last 2 years didnt even happen.
Remember what you said in your Spider-Man 2 review: if it was less silly and campy than the first movie, it would be too big of a style change. I think the same thing about the human characters in this movie. If they were completely absent, it would be too different from the first movie, and would feel more like a spin-off than a sequel. I'm glad there's less of them, but I'm also glad there's not _none_ of them.
Remember Sonic X had a ton of humans; but they all had a purpose especially the main human characters. Hell in the 1st season was a story arc in one single episode in which it focused on a girl in a wheelchair and her relationship with her mom and dad. And it still kept with the whole overall story. So having alot of humans can be done successful if you have the correct writers involved.
@The Music Decomposer I would agree with you, but I also have *no* idea how the writers expect to make some version of SA2's story work while keeping the human characters from the first two movies in it. I'm not saying they can't do it; Sonic and co *do* interact with civilians, G.U.N. soldiers, and even the President in the Adventure games. They could help get Sonic out of prison/sneak him onto a rocket, or stare at the sky ineffectually in the final act to say some contrived line like: "Come on, Sonic." in the climax. But they also probably have to introduce not just Shadow, but Amy (whether they keep Rouge, given Hollywood's current slant, or just, shall we say...remove emphasis on certain aspects of her character, I can only speculate about). Plus, if Jim Carrey does come back for the third one, they also have to devote at least a good scene or two to his thoughts about his grandfather Gerald making a death egg super weapon out of the moon, and his motivation for doing so, ultimately leading into a mini-redemption arc for Robotnik in the final act. Lots of stuff to balance w/the only Sonic story that's actually kind of close to being amazing. Also: nearly every line Shadow says in SA2 is extremely quotable. The writers have to include basically all of the same lines. If Shadow doesn't say "It all starts with this: a jewel containing the ultimate power." when Sonic first meets him, that is what we call a wasted opportunity.
I really liked this movie, even more than the first one but I do still appreciate the main couple that adopted Sonic, I really like that he feels like a kid instead of some cool teen, I wouldn't want them to get rid of the human characters because they are so important to this version of him they can just do like the TV show where they're watching from a cockpit or something (doing more grounded missions or recon) but yeah I had a blast, all the humor was cranked up to 11 all the humans were wacky so they could be on par with Sonic, and my God as a Sonic fan the references littered throughout... Amazing
lol except for the weeding, i mean we can pretend like that did not happen. you have to at least credit the first move for having beter story arcs for the side characters
I really wish voice acting was recognized more and given more status as something worthy of an award cause MY GOD Idris Elba MURDERED this role. And let me tell you when I say the crowd went BALLISTIC over the end credit scene... I literally could. Not. Hear. A. WORD. LET'S GO BABY. Whooooooooooooooooooo. It was the only logical choice really.
The first movie had the idea of giving us a simple story, where most of the action could be done inside simple spaces, while exploring the hero and the villain. Now, with the success of the first film, Paramount was able to expand this new universe in a way that they could explore more roads for future plots, along with new characters, scenarios, threats and lore coming from the games. Sonic 2 gave the fans and the audience exactly what they needed, and I can't wait to see what they'll do with the third movie and the spin-off series, featuring Knuckles.
@Orcaluv26 They might make appearances in the Knuckles TV series. Otherwise you would have to wait until they do an adaption of Sonic Heroes if they want to tackle that. (which personally I hope they do). As Sonic Heroes reinvented them after Knuckles Chaotix was deemed non-canon to the original line of games (sonic 1 to Shadow the Hedgehog).
Yeah I really don't think this story would have worked if they had had to do a ton of introductionary stuff that they got out of the way in the first one. I think going slow at first was a good move for this franchise, allowing us to get to know Sonic first and foremost and establish the rivalry with Robotnik. Now we know what Sonic is about, what Eggman is about, and what Sonic is fighting for.
The first movie was essentially going for the normies, not getting too heavy into stuff from the games so as to not scare them off. Now that everybody's settled in, the writers can start going a bit nuts, and God bless 'em for going full speed ahead with that. It's basically what the latest Godzilla movies did, where the second flick is where things really got going.
I really liked Dr. Robotnik's assistant being Waylon Smithers to Robotnik's Mr. Burns in full force. The joke with him serving the latte to the customer was pretty damn funny. As for the rest of the movie, it was much more confident than the first. Comparatively speaking, the first really did seem to be a test run that didn't use all its potential. But this one was a perfect sequel to counter that.
Low and behold, it’s officially 1 year old!!! I’m very joyed to say that this is way better than the last one! The filmmakers love the video game lore so much by inserting more trademarks such as Sonic not being able to handle water, going through maze booby traps, the Chaos Emeralds, Robotnik’s giant robot, and much more Love Idris Elba as Knuckles being so super serious and literal as a warrior trained from birth to fulfill his duty, Colleen O Shaughnessy as Tails from the original cartoon being so alone for so long but looks up to Sonic as the fastest being in the galaxy, and Jim Carrey playing Robotnik bringing his best comic material even further If this is the last role he takes before retiring then it’s quite the note to leave on Love how these new characters tie back to previous events as well expanding Sonic’s background The action scenes are much more colorful and robust brimming with explosions and gunplay The human parts are less interesting however, they feel less consequential this time around An extended dance sequence in the middle could’ve been cut out entirely since it doesn’t advance the plot but it’s still very cleverly animated and giggle worthy But the mythos is fascinating, there’s good comedy, and far better action this time I didn’t mind the extra runtime either because this managed to be so enjoyable from start to finish A good amount of heart too by the end Being a hero isn’t about being alone it’s about being responsible for others, you can have a new family even if you lost your old one, friendship and honor are two different things Super geared for part 3 and they're going to bring the next big villain from the games which will please a lot of hardcore gamers and fans of Sonic lore Schwartz still brings the fun, kinetic energy for this video game adaptation without worrying about too much franchise building or cramming in too many nods winking at the camera The themes from the source material in here are true to form from the games themselves to the cartoon anime series Whether you’re a true fan or not this is still high-value family entertainment that manages to take everything from the first installment and expand upon that in really good doses I believe video game movies are starting to get better
Sonic is like Ninja Turtles they thrive weirdness in their respective series. It's like any strangest that happens to them is practically considerable normal and any normalcy is considered strange.
They also were both under Paramount, but in comparison, the potential here after doing more wild stuff is being met with better attention than when Out Of The Shadows tried that.
Sonic's watching the Owl lady hologram and starts getting emotional, and the cop looks at Tails and asks "OOhhhh okay, so that's like, YOUR dad?" was genuinely fucking hilarious. That and Robotnik showing up on a goddamn riding lawnmower
Love seeing Doug get truly happy and excited. It makes me happy. He seems like a nice dude, and seeing him giddy about his childhood is awesome to see. Thank you for making a dying man laugh dude. All love to you and yours, my brother.
You guys gotta admit this film was amazing and that post credits scene was glorious, can't wait for the third film and that Sonic Series they are making also.
The Wedding bit in the middle was genuinely horrible. It’s cool they introduced GUN but it was really dumb. Also Shadow better kick ass in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, seriously.
I love that you mention that it would just be OKAY for Tails to show up in the _actual_ biplane. With no explanation. That is Tails. He was inspired by Sonic to fight, he isn't a coward. _You hear that Sega?!_ Give Tails some flippin respect.

I absolutely loved this movie. Plain and simple. But I loved the first one too. This movie was everything I wanted the first movie to be, but I knew they had to sell the idea first before they went all in. The first movie walked, so this movie could soar.
I feel like the relationship of these movies can be best described as the 1st walked so the 2nd could run (no pun intended). I feel like the reason I was more lenient with the 1st is because I saw the potential in it, and I'm really glad to hear this new one is utilizing it more. Can't wait to see it tomorrow!
Sonic 2 was awesome. And omg the mid credits scene!!!!!!!!! Idris as knuckles was fun. My favorite line was when sonic said knuckles's species been fighting for centuries like Vin and the rock
Jim jumping on the car biting the class literally killed me because that’s classic Jim and it was like I was watching my ace Ventura for the first time

I agree that most of the wedding stuff was way too drawn out and could have been cut without much impact to the story, but I really love Sonic's relationship with his human parents and think they did a good job keeping it in while making room for the new characters. Also, every joke with Knuckles misunderstanding things had me on the floor.
So in a nutshell this seems to be the only videogame movie adaptation that managed to Have a good sequel. And it was a sonic movie. SEGA I’m so glad you didn’t screw this up.
for me this was probably the most faithful video game adaptation to date. There were SO MANY nods to the games it feels like the writers were genuine fans and not just paid to write a script. And even if the wedding twist was out of place it was hilarious
@@pcguru3096 Baddy, you get that not even kids liked it right? It halted the movie, focusing on characters that nobody cares and that they were very unlikable If you liked it fine? But you like a diferent movie, this is sonic, not a trigical comedy wedding movie

In kids shows/comic books/video games translated into movies, post-9/11, it's standard to just try and translate that cartoony fantasy world into a version of our reality that is far more grimdark, gritty and overly-militarized than it really is (and that's saying something). See: Transformers, early MCU, mid-2000s Batman. One of the reasons Sonic 2 worked so well is because they inverted the traditional Hollywood rule. In Sonic 2, they gave the Sonic universe the priority and translated our overly-militarized, grimdark, gritty world into the cartoony fantasy Sonic world. Sonic 1 was fumbled quite a bit by Paramount before there was a change of hands and Tyson Hesse was brought on, and there was likely also that issue with trying to find the "voice" they wanted to use for the tone of these movies, so a lot of that conventional translation is still in there. Sonic 2 takes the gloves off and turns our world into a cartoon for the sake of humor or (to a lesser extent) driving forward the narrative. Agent Stone set up a coffee shop in the middle of Green Hills and somehow also made it a command post. The hows and whys don't matter because it's a cartoon now. It stops it from bogging the Sonic universe down with gritty, grimdark, hyperrealistic nonsense while still having a more digestible version of that gritty, grimdark, hyperrealistic nonsense that is compatible with Sonic.
Honestly the way I wish Sonic 2 ended was after the final battle, Sonic decides he is grown up to survive back on his island with Tails and Knuckles. They leave at the end after saying their goodbyes to Tom and Maddie. And then after credits, we get a post credit scene where as soon as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles get situated at home, they hear commotion outside. They look to see Amy being carried off by Metal Sonic. Then it shows the three running towards the screen. The end.
The limp bizkit joke made me burst out in laughs. It took me a minute to get because Eggman went lower with his voice but had to be One of My fav jokes in the movie
The moment the priest opened up the bible, the whole wedding side story went from somewhat distracting to *hilarious* and I was completely hooked, lol.
I may be the only person on the planet where the wedding scenes didn’t bother me too much. Remembering Sonic X, there were episodes where Sonic and the gang interacted with human characters at beaches and in the city, do this felt like an extension of that . In context, the wedding stuff sets ups the post credits scene.
The texting scene with Knuckles reading out the texts and even the dots when Sonic is typing...That was too hilarious. "Dot Dot Dot. Dot Dot Dot Dot Dot Dot."
This movie is one of those *Aliens* or *Terminator 2* moments where the first movie was good and the second movie was a massive fucking improvement. I got to see this movie last Friday, and I absolutely loved it. That little tease of Sonic 3 at the end of the movie was so damn good. I sincerely hope Jim Carrey returns to be Eggman in the third one
I personally thought the sequel was better than the first. Everyone from the humans to Sonic and friends seemed more comfortable with their role. Except Jim Carrey to be having a blast in both. But that seems like a given
Ben Schwartz list of Blue characters include: Sonic The Hedgehog Dewey Duck Leonardo This guy has a weird blue typecast. Soon, every blue character will be voiced by him.
Your dislike of the human characters is to much. undeservedly strong. Also, that sarcastic "Oh SoRRy He IsN'T iN a CaR GuYs" like anyone was actually like "I hope the whole second sonic movie is the first one" genuinly decreased the quality of the review.
I totally agree. I never saw the first one, but went to the theaters for the second one and was insanely surprised at how good it was and how well they incorporated the video game elements into the movie. Jim Carrey was great too
I heard that Shadow is gonna be in the next one and a big part of his character is how he responded to the death of his human companion, Maria. I feel like if they did get rid of Tom (namely if they were ballsy enough to kill him off), I feel like that would be a good way to tie that into the rest of the movie. At the end of the game, Sonic convinces Shadow to join the side of good and it doesn’t really make much sense from a storytelling standpoint. If Sonic loses his human companion in Tom, he would have something to connect with Shadow on and they could get through their trauma together.
I liked the first one and this one even more. Glad the human characters are still around. The next movie is definitely going to be retaining a fair amount of the human cast and I'm happy about that. Sonic's family is a big part of the movie universe and it'd be strange to not have them around
I can see some of them being slowly phased out as we get more Sonic characters involved. Outside of G.U.N (which I think the General is probably based off the G.U.N commander from Shadow the Hedgehog) and Robotnik that is. Personally it would feel jarring seeing them completely removed in this movie. Although I do feel that some of the wedding scenes could've been cut a bit shorter.
@@jordanread5829 Some edits could have been made sure. But I honestly feel reviewers went too hard on the wedding stuff when all of it clearly tied into the family aspect and eventually the plot of the movie. I do agree the human characters will be seen less and less. But the next era of Sonic games to adpat have more human involvement so I don't think it's anytime soon. Plus even if the movies don't have them, the side series (& comics) might.
My little guy, 7 years old, started playing sonic a few years ago so he was super hyped to watch the movie I thought it was pretty cool. I grew up watching the cartoons and playing the game. I enjoyed it.
How dose knuckles know how to fuse the emeralds back together if he never used them. Which makes me wonder how Sonic, knuckles, and tails have chaos energy, when they couldn't be exposed to the master emerald, because it's on earth.
Fair comments regarding the first film- if anything this movie highlights the shortcomings of the first one. That shows just how much of an improvement this movie is. I personally loved the 1st movie, but this one just blows it out of the water
I feel like the First one is like the first Terminator or Alien. It's going to be over shadowed by the more refined sequel but we needed the first to even get started. It's a fine movie for the trope it does with Sonic and sonic did fit in with said tropes. Imo what separated Sonic 1 over most other movies that did the same thing, sonic felt more believable and a better fit for what they were doing. I don't look back and discredit the first because I knew what it was was thankful it did a good job at what it had agaisnt it. S1 super sneaker ran, so S2 could sonic speed, now will S3 can step it up? My only gripe about the second movie was they technically did NOT go to sonic world or a world that's not earth. But given where they are going, it might make sense to keep it in earth. But they have the Rings so I felt they could have made it in their world and really keep the human out of the movie for the most part. I don't mind the humans, they are all likeable. Serve their roles. And given this is it's own story for Sonic that makes sense to not fully get rid of the Earth. But would have been nice to use those ring to just go to Sonic's world's. Or bring the humans there. Over all it really gives the fans more of what we want for the most part.
That makes them kinda great as a double feature, if you think about it; the fact that each one has different highlights, which satisfies different kinds of public...
*Literally revolve part of Sonic’s character arc around growing to see Tom as a father figure and explicitly depicting the group as a family by the end of the film* Doug: Lol, get rid of humans.
I loved the weird for weirdness sake that was the first movie! I felt that they took very specific jokes from the first one and really just beat them to death in the second one trying to get a running gag going but it felt forced to me. Oddly enough the random human interactions you didn't care for, I loved cause it felt like they were going back to being weird and trying new things like they did in the first movie.
One if the major writers, is Ian Flynn. Who both rescued the Archie comics before they where shut down for good, but then moved on to the IDW comics as well as Sonic Mania. This guy just gets this franchise and knows how to make the right twists to make what is honestly a ludicrous idea seem, real in its universe.
My thoughts on the film: I really enjoyed it. Yeah, it’s not perfect, and it maybe could’ve used a couple more slower scenes. But overall, this was a ton of fun, had plenty of heart, and was a fantastic improvement. Here’s hoping the 3rd film lives up and/or continues the trend.
5:32 i actually welcome this kind of ballsy joke to the audience when they mostly give the audience what they want to see. like it's a slap at the face, but then they give you a gift that has what you always wanted. like yeah, the slap doesn't hurt at all after that.
What I really enjoyed about the first film was the visual treats like the chases from Robotnik through the rings across the world was awesome. I was also kind of invested in Tom's dilemma of wanting to leave Green Hills to pursue his goal, even if the dialogue was pretty basic, Sonic was still more interesting than HOP because its freaking Sonic. But Sonic 2 I thought was awesome and I'm not gonna lie, I thought Natasha Rothwell was funnier here than in the first film.
What I really dug was that the first film felt like a Proof of Concept, it was a roadtrip, relatively low budget, but proved to the surprise of everyone including myself it could work. This was felt like taking that PoC and executing it in full and making a much more satisfying movie overall. It's also neat to me that the first film was Tom taking Sonic on a road trip, and this one was effectively Sonic taking Tails on a road trip on a life or death international level. The parallels of Dadtom-to-SonSonic and Big Bro Sonic to Tail was really well done. Again there's the five minutes overall of fart jokes and kid references (which the kids in the theater laughed at, and hey, they did it right apparently) and the 15 minutes of the wedding subplot I don't fully understand why it got so much focus, but there is an absurdity to it that I don't know if it adds or takes away. I don't even know if it's a mess! It's like... a calculated mess.
potentially out of all sonic material the human characters in this might be the most entertaining they probably did this to make the world less of a blank slate and when they have to focus on those characters it doesn't bore you too much, which tbh isn't a high bar to cross with only exceptions being Ivo and Maria who are both dead but are only used for growth for other characters.
Ben Schwartz aka Jean Ralphio from Parks and Recreation - Sonic Chris Pratt aka Andy Dwyer from Parks and Recreation - Mario Is every one from Parks and Recreation going to voice every video game character?
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is pretty enjoyable and just laugh-out-loud funny. I watched it in a packed theatre and i swear the adults were laughing just as much (if not more than) the kids were. I was skeptical about Idris Elba playing Knuckles, but man alive! He totally knocked the ball out of the park! And I'm not just talking about what his character did at the end of the film! The film has some great action of course and Tails is freaking adorable! Such a fun, cute movie that I may go see again. And I'm the type that usually just watch a movie in the theatre once and then wait for it to come out on DVD.
"I should probably let you know what I thought of the first one." Sonic fans: Oh don't worry. We already know... In all seriousness, your thoughts of this and the first film were also my thoughts too. So it's all good.
What did everyone think of Sonic 2?

I really want them to use the “I’m the ultimate life form” line so I can laugh my ass off in the cinema. To be fair I laughed at the film quite a bit for the second one for the absurdity of it all. Actually took the time to go to the toilet during the wedding scenes because that was when it was getting real bad.
In the theater i saw this in there was an audible "oh shit" for the final reval, and it was a mix of fear, surprise, and excitement.
Imagine if they bring in the Sonic X version of the X-Tornado that’s like half F-14 Tomcat and half Transformer at some point?

I’m a 00s kid so the Sonic I grew up with was anything from 2003 and onwards. I adored how this movie takes a lot from both the classic games and especially the Adventure series. Knuckles has always been one of my top three favorite characters in the series and he’s such a badass in this! For the longest time, we had to deal with dumb jock Knuckles from Sonic Boom. So much respect to Idris Elba. Easily the best Knuckles in a while IMO. He stole the movie for me.
I’m planning on seeing it again with my kid brothers.
Boom knuckles was a joke and funny character but mainstream knuckles is the knuckles in this movie hope Sega gives us that knuckles again
A badass Knuckles voiced by Idris Elba is a very large part of why I'm excited to watch the movie, so that's great to hear. It'll be sort of a family get-together in a week and I think it's gonna be great!

Plus they did have more of a purpose for being there with the twist of introducing a major element of the modern Sonic games.
Man I love the humans, they’re great and I’m so goad they’re still here.
@@yoda908 I remember that episode. It's one of my favorites in that it shows the lengths Sonic will go to keep a promise. He's awesome like that.
Amazing

@@Fleshi_Guy615 spoiler
It's Shadow
The first one was a pleasant surprise. It was fun. I’ll probably give this a watch
I actually liked it
Ps love the new look of your reviews where you show clips compare to the old reviews you did without being nostalgia critic
Low and behold, it’s officially 1 year old!!!
I’m very joyed to say that this is way better than the last one!
The filmmakers love the video game lore so much by inserting more trademarks such as Sonic not being able to handle water, going through maze booby traps, the Chaos Emeralds, Robotnik’s giant robot, and much more
Love Idris Elba as Knuckles being so super serious and literal as a warrior trained from birth to fulfill his duty, Colleen O Shaughnessy as Tails from the original cartoon being so alone for so long but looks up to Sonic as the fastest being in the galaxy, and Jim Carrey playing Robotnik bringing his best comic material even further
If this is the last role he takes before retiring then it’s quite the note to leave on
Love how these new characters tie back to previous events as well expanding Sonic’s background
The action scenes are much more colorful and robust brimming with explosions and gunplay
The human parts are less interesting however, they feel less consequential this time around
An extended dance sequence in the middle could’ve been cut out entirely since it doesn’t advance the plot but it’s still very cleverly animated and giggle worthy
But the mythos is fascinating, there’s good comedy, and far better action this time
I didn’t mind the extra runtime either because this managed to be so enjoyable from start to finish
A good amount of heart too by the end
Being a hero isn’t about being alone it’s about being responsible for others, you can have a new family even if you lost your old one, friendship and honor are two different things
Super geared for part 3 and they're going to bring the next big villain from the games which will please a lot of hardcore gamers and fans of Sonic lore
Schwartz still brings the fun, kinetic energy for this video game adaptation without worrying about too much franchise building or cramming in too many nods winking at the camera
The themes from the source material in here are true to form from the games themselves to the cartoon anime series
Whether you’re a true fan or not this is still high-value family entertainment that manages to take everything from the first installment and expand upon that in really good doses
I believe video game movies are starting to get better
This movie gets an immediate jump in score for me for breaking the dreaded Knuckles curse
I still enjoy the pumpkin hill rap lol
The real curse is that he himself barely does anything in games anymore.
Besides be a war criminal

The end.
Now thats a franchise im looking foward

I personally thought the sequel was better than the first. Everyone from the humans to Sonic and friends seemed more comfortable with their role. Except Jim Carrey to be having a blast in both. But that seems like a given
Ben Schwartz list of Blue characters include:
Sonic The Hedgehog
Dewey Duck

This guy has a weird blue typecast.
Doug's relationship with the 1st and 2nd sonic movies is literally the same as his relationship with the 1st and second angry birds movies.
Still remember when doug was once supposed to play eggman for that one live action sonic fan film on youtube.
*Literally revolve part of Sonic’s character arc around growing to see Tom as a father figure and explicitly depicting the group as a family by the end of the film*
Doug: Lol, get rid of humans.

One of my favorite Easter eggs is the name of the coffee shop which is a reference to an old school game called Dr. Robotnik's mean bean machine
I saw it yesterday. I really enjoyed it. I was laughing hard at Jim carry. I needed a good laugh after the disappointment I had with morbius
5:32 i actually welcome this kind of ballsy joke to the audience when they mostly give the audience what they want to see.
like it's a slap at the face, but then they give you a gift that has what you always wanted.
like yeah, the slap doesn't hurt at all after that.
If I’m being perfectly honest I LOVED the wedding twist just as much as I loved the final battle and ending
That Sir is the greatest movie poster in existence.
Thumbnail reminds me of when Doug got killed by Super Mecha Death Christ 2000
"Untitled Review Show" xD
After having watched the worst iteration of knuckles in Sonic Boom, this was quite the breathe of fresh air. Very fun movie :)
Boom knuckles is just a dumbass knuckles
The poster in the background is just making me try to picture some of Sonic's lines in Arnold's voice.
Not gonna lie, I actually liked the humans in this movie. They were so much better than the first film.
that bit at the wedding with the pastor made my theater laugh SO hard
potentially out of all sonic material the human characters in this might be the most entertaining they probably did this to make the world less of a blank slate and when they have to focus on those characters it doesn't bore you too much, which tbh isn't a high bar to cross with only exceptions being Ivo and Maria who are both dead but are only used for growth for other characters.
It's like NPCs that make you care for, and not just odd additions to the world that frankly the Adventure games gave out of nowhere, hehe.

And I sure hope they give G.U.N it’s redeeming qualities just like Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Ben Schwartz aka Jean Ralphio from Parks and Recreation - Sonic
Chris Pratt aka Andy Dwyer from Parks and Recreation - Mario
Is every one from Parks and Recreation going to voice every video game character?
Nick Offerman for a banjo kazoie movie
Knowing Ben Schwartz also plays a cocky Leonardo in Rise of the TMNT the type casting feels really strong.
"I should probably let you know what I thought of the first one."
Sonic fans: Oh don't worry. We already know...
In all seriousness, your thoughts of this and the first film were also my thoughts too. So it's all good.
Someone: This character is a cartoon tomboy in blue…
Ben Schwartz: You’re son of the bitch, I’m in)))
