I left teaching after 1 year in the classroom. I remember how all first year teachers were supposed to have a mentor. About three months in, the school "reassigned" mine. When my class went to crap, they "couldn't understand what happened" and blamed and bullied me for not doing better. I asked for help and was ignored. Seriously, the public school system is a joke. Unsupportive, inane rules, unrealistic goals, reducing children and staff to numbers on a graph, and overall callous. I've been watching a few "Why I Quit Teaching" videos, and I relate the most to yours. Personality-wise, I am very similar. I love reading interesting things, I love learning, but I also really don't care if a student is not interested. If a student doesn't want to do the work, that is on them. Trying to motivate even just a half-dozen students, let alone 20-30, is difficult. Multiply that times 4 and it is just too much. I also hate being "on" all day. I find that I cannot bring the same level of enthusiasm and focus to all of my classes, even within the same day. On some days of the week, I honestly just want to skip a class - this sounds so irresponsible, but I would like days where I can contribute without having to present, motivate, hand-hold, and lead people. I love doing some of that, but doing it all day every day is not easy for me. The challenging part for me is that I am just barely finishing up 1 year of teaching. Maybe teaching something else, like Career & Technical Education, would be better for me. Some things, like art, photography, some of those other electives, still involve some "teaching", but they also involve more workshopping, more creativity, and more flexibility with scheduling. Enjoyed the video. *** Also, one of the things that I have found MOST challenging is that it is all on YOU. In other jobs you might just be responsible for a small piece of a larger puzzle in a company or organization... As a teacher, there is no one else. Ahhh yes I totally know how you feel! I would encourage any teacher to give it at least 2 years, because that first year is just...so new and so hard. Teaching at the college level could also be an option for you (although that might require further education first)! Still a very demanding job, but I feel like professors are able to place more responsibility on the adult college students. At the end of the day though, you deserve to be in a job that is right for you. I struggled with feeling "selfish" for no longer being a teacher, but it helps to remember that the students deserve teachers who truly want to be there, that really is better for everybody. Good luck in your journey with this! Whatever you decide, remember there really aren't "right" or "wrong" choices. There are just different choices to create the life you want to live. (:
Thanks for your reply. I do want to give it another year... but I also ask myself if I think my feelings towards it will change. If things will be different or better in 3-5 years. They might be a little easier, but judging by what most teachers say, it is still pretty crazy 5 years in. But really, should I be waiting 3-5 years to see if I like my profession?? (Rhetorical question). I’ve had a lot of uncertainty around teaching jobs in the first place... my last 3 roles in schools (Paraeducator, Student Teacher, Teacher) I was hired after the school year started. This year looks like it will be the same. Part of me feels like if the uncertainty is all the same, I should try doing work that I find engaging and fun and puts me in a creative flow... and see if I can make that happen. If I have massive uncertainty anyway... why not go for that? Anyway thanks again for the video.
Yesssss you totally summed me up!! When I get off work either I'm driving home in complete silence or my music is cranked all the way up, because I guess I feel numb and drained too. I was worried about tailoring my resume...but I am certain I can get a job in another field, thanks for this video!
Hi dear Madeline, I love your vibe and the way you inform all of us in your video's. I'm currently in a job transition after being a nurse combined with lifestyle coach to QA analyst. Just started getting into it and get certifications. I have worked 13 years in family doctors clinics and I am just exhausted from it. I can very much relate to what you say, feeling totally numbed after work and not able to have conversation with your partner. Thank you for sharing your experience, it helps a lot!
@@Shelby-s2w I got through four rounds of interviews and I found out a few days ago that I didn’t get the job. Got the skills through a coding boot camp.
Yesss you can do it! I think teachers especially feel guilty for prioritizing their own needs, but ignoring them makes everything harder in the long run (for the students too)! Good luck!💛
True! I am a Korean langauge teacher but want to switch into Software testing now or any IT field..seeing your video feels yes I can switch into this 😊
This video was very informative and gave me life. I see a lot of I quit teaching vlogs focus on how grueling teaching can be and their experience but I have no idea how they moved forward. Thank you
Thanks for the video Madeline... it is so true what you mention. Making eye contact and have a good connection and have a good talk with the interviewer is the winning point. Sometime we just focus on the technical part, which is also important, but we often forget that they are also humans and it all comes down to if they liked us or not.
Yup teaching is soooo much to do, exhausting! I usually need to get home and sleep after teaching. I totally get the thing about not being able to communicate after work, and other people just can't understand it, I don't want to be rude but sometimes have felt like saying just please don't talk to me for like an hour, so my mind can just settle from the overwhelm! I found your channel coz I'm researching QA work for career change, so this is really interesting to me- teaching does really burn you out! I relate sooo much to what you say about having to be "on" all the time when you teach. And you can't take it a bit easier or get support from colleagues when you're at work with a bad cold or headache, for example!
ahhhh so sorry you are also feeling burnt out with teaching! I think some personality types are more suited to how people-centered teaching is. Definitely true that you can't really pass your class off to a coworker when you're having a particularly bad day 😂 Good luck in your searching! I hope you find a job that is a great fit for you💛
Happy New Year and thank you for making this video. I am currently a teacher who's interested in transitioning to the QA field. I have been a teacher for over 12 years now and I understand your positive and negative feelings about the job. I appreciate your honest assessment about both careers and that you had no prior experience at all. I am more motivated to attempt this move in the near future. Thanks again!
I really appreciate this video! I just had my first day as a QA analyst in my current company I was already employed with. I had a connect in the dept and it is a lot. I never had the experience as well. I felt a little overwhelmed today. I hope I can do this I beat myself up at the end of that and thought what have I got myself into.
I definitely felt that way when I first started (and still do some days)! But as long as you're putting in the work you'll get the hang of it! Good luck (:

No one should have to TEACH more than 4 hours/day. The rest of it all takes it 4+ hours/day. Unfortunately the system is not set up for teachers to have the prep time that they need to sustain and be successful in the long run. Better at some private schools. Worst at Title I schools.
@@ArtLenLa Yup. Forced collaboration and alignment have gone too far. Mandated team data meetings aren't productive or efficient for most veteran teachers and spur many to seek non-classroom roles; they grow sick of the act of it all and having not 1 minute of autonomy over their time all day long.
I had a very similar career shift...I was a lecturer at a engineering diploma college....now I have joined an IT solutions company as Trainee Quality Analyst a month ago...I could relate to all the experiences you had as a teacher...I had similar problems you faced during your teaching career...thanks for the insight...I feel more confident in pursuing my career in QA...It was really helpful 😊👍
Watching your vids is like looking through a mirror. I worked as an English teacher for 12 years. Similarly, I and no idea what to do with my life after high school, so English Language Teaching was kind of an obvious career path. I've been working as a QA for almost 2 years and, even though I miss teaching sometimes, I wouldn't change the life I've got at all! Teaching is sadly an underpaid and underrated job. 😿
Thank you, Madeline for the video! I’m currently taking some courses on QA automation but I want to apply to jobs as a QA manual since I am still weak at my coding skills but worried at the same time that most companies prefer automation. I’d love to hear your thoughts about that! ❤️ Thank you!
WOW! It's like the Holy Spirit led me and my wife to this video. I'm currently looking to change careers from being a high school teacher to any remote job tech or design related and QA Testing is one to consider. This video confirmed that I'm way more qualified for this career. I really appreciate this video. Also, I'm a Coach and Personal Trainer as well so if you ever need advice, I'm more than happy to help. God bless you!
Thank you for your service. Seriously, I thought about teaching when I was in college, but I knew it was not a good fit for me. You aren't just teaching a subject, to some extent (and sometime to large extent) you end up raising children and you need to speak at least two languages - at least in southwest. So I say not only should you get more time to prepare for the day, you should paid more. A lot more.
The way you described your start of teaching sounds like me back in college and even now. I’ve enjoyed Tech Ed for years and started college with a major in General Studies so I could see what’s out there. My sister (Math teacher) had suggested I teach Tech Ed because of my interest in it. Not sure I’d leave teaching to become a QA, but appreciate the advice
Yea, the first part of your video got me interested. I like the fact that your kind of person as free sprited and you don't impose your will on other people, that's pretty radd in my own opinion.
As a QA engineer I feel this is totally underrated which is not, you still need education as programming to become really good at it. Just being a tester is not enough for this career, I am not trying to be negative about it, I feel you can change careers if you put enough effort. It is also crazy the amount of people you have to compete with now as a non related career, if you don't study programming nowadays and you don't have any contacts the truth is that is not going to land you a QA job.
Our story’s are similar. I worked in a call center and when issue would come up I would try to fix them/see why they happened. so, when QA need him from the call center to test a new website my manager suggested me. I help for about a year doing call center work and QA work then I got hired with QA.
I have decided to remain a substitute as that enabled me to have more time outside of work (not having to lesson plan or mark and stuff) but what holds me back from changing careers is not having the freedom to take time off and having to request time off etc :'( I cant imagine just having 2 weeks off in the whole year
Did you learn coding on the job (do you need to know it)? Were you train on the job or you already have tech skills and what are skills you need to be QA?
To begin with, watch several RUclips software testing courses. They're obviously free and not that long to be honest. Then, maybe watch some automated testing courses to understand the difference. The key is making sure you study for at least a couple of hours every day. This way you'll get there in no time

Hi, If I didn't miss the part you took lessons about java selenium Manuel testing etc. you are the first person I have ever heard went directly to the interview with zero knowledge. You are very lucky, a lot of people include me taking very expensive (15.000$) courses for 1 year and then try to have an ISTQB certificate to just the go to the interview. I hope I will make it to the end
Hi, there seem to be a lot of jobs that contain "QA" such as Manual QA, QA Analyst, QA Engineer, etc. Do you have insight as to which level out at being something someone with no training can get into, and which require specific skills or schooling.
5:58 That is for any job, for life, actually! You can be excellent, the best in what you do, but if you do not have good connections, things are pretty rough! And sometimes you get things just by knowing people, without the need of any kind of qualifications, which does not sound fair to me, but that is life, as they say.
Thank you so much!! This gives me some confidence in finding a job. I do have one more question. Since you didn't have any formal training in QA, how did the interview process go? Since it was a junior position did you not get asked a lot of technical questions?
Ah that’s a good question! Right, I don’t remember being asked super technical questions. There were two interviews, and on the first interview I was given a kind of “test” where I looked at a sample webpage and had 20 minutes to find as many things wrong as I could. But that’s as technical as it got!
Hi, Madeleine, I am a computer programmer who has been out of the loop for some years, now I am back, I took some courses about data analysis but suddenly I felt curious about QA Testing. Where shall I begin? Thanks

I just paused at 2:26 your attitude at teaching is awesome just not at a regimented highschool. Many teachers like myself are in similar circumstances.
Sis you did nothing, I'm sorry. You knew a good person in a good company, that is pure luck.
I’m on year 16 it does not get easier.
You are the kind of teacher that students have crushes on. Glad you made the switch and are at a better place.
I thought the same 🤣 she's pretty and sweet.
I’m a former teacher too and I have a QA Tester interview this Friday. This info is super helpful. Thanks!
Yay I'm so glad! Good luck friend!!
How did it go? And how did you get the skills to qualify for an interview?
@@Shelby-s2w I got through four rounds of interviews and I found out a few days ago that I didn’t get the job. Got the skills through a coding boot camp.

I am a first year teacher and debating on switching - this video is so helpful and so so encouraging!! Thank you!
Good luck with whatever you decide! It's a tough decision and a hard place to be. So glad my video could be helpful for you!💛
Veteran teacher here. I feel you. I’m ready for a transition. I need it for my sanity’s sake 🙏🏼
Yesss you can do it! I think teachers especially feel guilty for prioritizing their own needs, but ignoring them makes everything harder in the long run (for the students too)! Good luck!💛
True! I am a Korean langauge teacher but want to switch into Software testing now or any IT field..seeing your video feels yes I can switch into this 😊
Hi, I've just subscribed your channel. I also an English teacher. Right now, I start to study QA as my next job. thank you for the sharing.
This video was very informative and gave me life. I see a lot of I quit teaching vlogs focus on how grueling teaching can be and their experience but I have no idea how they moved forward. Thank you
Awe I'm so glad this video was helpful! Thanks for your kind words (:
I'm also quitting teaching and going to pursue in being a QA. This is very helpful. It's like you are my guardian angel. Lol. Thanks!
How has been your switch to QA? I'm a teacher thinking of making a career change to QA and would love to hear your experience.
Definitely true that you can't really pass your class off to a coworker when you're having a particularly bad day 😂
Good luck in your searching!
Thank you! One day at a time
@@MadelineElaineYT so true, I really hated my job at the beginning of my career as a Tester and slowly eventually, I somehow got over it and now it's been 4 years and currently I really love my testing job. I cannot really believe myself
Soooo helpful. I was advised to look into this career because I’m very detailed oriented. Thanks for the tips.
I'm so glad this was helpful!! Good luck (:
Congrats, Madeline! I'm 37 and want to be you when I grow up. :) Also, thanks for being so transparent.
Thank you so much for this! You're so generous and humble to share your experience. I'm looking forward doing a similar transition in my career and this really boosts my energy!! 🙂
Thanks for sharing your transition and how your day normally looks. Really helpful info!
you are my saving grace in my next step on my journey. you shall be seeing a lot of mila the cat in these comments as i work through getting out of customer service into QA. This time next year i hope to be on the brink of peaceful sleep.
the part where you say you don't want to be in charge of other people/have authority over them really resonated with me. I'm also that way and when i look into future job prospects and see manager is the only way to move up, im like ugh
I'm looking into QA and this video is very insightful. Thank you so much for this.
No one should have to TEACH more than 4 hours/day. The rest of it all takes it 4+ hours/day. Unfortunately the system is not set up for teachers to have the prep time that they need to sustain and be successful in the long run. Better at some private schools. Worst at Title I schools.
YES can you imagine the quality of education if teachers had adequate time to prepare engaging lessons?? I'm glad to hear it's better in some schools!
The prep time is taken up with grade level or subject meetings and filling in for absences.
@@AyakoTachi I took early retirement to save my mental and physical health.

I just started QA training 2weeks ago. Please upload some more stuff about QA works and the future. Thanks a lot for sharing your life and career.
Ahh good luck with the training!! I'll try to think of more QA stuff to share (: Thanks for watching!
hi how did you become a qa analyst? did you have to go back to college for it?
Thank you, Madeline for the video!
I’m currently taking some courses on QA automation but I want to apply to jobs as a QA manual since I am still weak at my coding skills but worried at the same time that most companies prefer automation. I’d love to hear your thoughts about that! ❤️
Thank you!
Hi...same here
Can you tell me please, what is your results up to now?
A lot more.
Thankyou so much for making this video my friend.

Ah! This video is everything. Thanks for being so thorough about this all.
So glad you enjoyed it!💛
As a QA engineer I feel this is totally underrated which is not, you still need education as programming to become really good at it.
Did they train you on the job?
This is so amazing !! congrats girl
I'm also a former English teacher turned QA 🙈 This video convinced me that I could do it without any technical background ✨
How did you make the transition to QA?

I feel so discouraged after hearing your experience. I have zero connections and landing a job seems highly unlikely.
Ok so hear me out… I don’t have a bachelors degree or high school diploma. But I’ve recently been interested in QA testing because I’m pretty good with software. Especially music software! And my only job experience is really bartending, I don’t really know how I can make a transition from that.
I’m learning QA automation! Please make a video how to prepare for the interview! Thanks 😊
Hi! Are you learning from a boot camp? I'm looking for a good training program.
@@AmiTrades No it’s not a boot camp. It’s called techfios.com because of pandemic they are teaching online!
Ok! good to know what your experience was but where did you learn what you know now?
Hi, If I didn't miss the part you took lessons about java selenium Manuel testing etc. you are the first person I have ever heard went directly to the interview with zero knowledge. You are very lucky, a lot of people include me taking very expensive (15.000$) courses for 1 year and then try to have an ISTQB certificate to just the go to the interview. I hope I will make it to the end
Thank you so much for sharing
Always interesting!
@@MadelineElaineYT what did you have in your second round of interview?
I’ve been seeing a lot of advertisements on social media of a promise of an $80k+ a year income as a QA. Is that true?

Oh man.. I hated teaching! And for that matter, hate managing people now. I'm just not the person who easily gives feedback yet it's kind of an essential function of both of those jobs. Nice to feel less alone here
Hi!! Can u pla share with us, the cover letter u wrote for ur intership or first job as a qa when u dint have any idea abt it all.. especially when u had a different educational background
I got my BA in Spanish thinking I would become a Spanish teacher. But I dropped out of the education program and am now trying to find a career that pays a living wage
So what course do you recommend to take to get into QA
I just paused at 2:26 your attitude at teaching is awesome just not at a regimented highschool. Many teachers like myself are in similar circumstances.
Sis you did nothing, I'm sorry. You knew a good person in a good company, that is pure luck. Do you have any idea how many hundreds of people out there put in months into learning programming languages and into QA courses, time and money into certification, made github projects to support their CVs, applied to 100s of jobs but did not get the chance to be called in for an interview? That is the industry reality. Best of luck at your job and growing in it, truly. Banking on a lucky break is not the thing.
To anyone who is looking to get hired with all that I mentioned, just keep applying, it's a numbers game.
