When I done ultra marathons. I pushed myself in training to recognize when I would feel terrible but never forced it. But I set goals hypothetically. My best year I did 2 ultras and Chicago marathon.
Next weekend im doin a 63km mountain ultra it's the end of my "crazy year of running" 6 ultras and 3 marathons....lol....I'm taking a few months off running after next weekend. I'm ready for a break!
Just did my first 50 mile trail run. 7k feet of elevation gain, gnarly 7 mile section buoldering through messy rocks at 25 min/mile crawling and scrambling. You fotta have food and hydration dialed and shoes that work. Blisters will ruin your gait and cause you to compensate to feel less pain, which will cause other body sttess issues. Ultras are no joke
Look at 100 mile finisher times they aren't "running," most are power hiking or walking. There's only a handful that will maintain a 7:00-9:30 pace for a majority of a 100M race. Having done a handful of both marathons and 100 milers, Id say that qualifying for Boston was harder because you had to mix speed with endurance. The 100 mile is just continuous forward motion, I've seen a lot of people complete them under cut-off just on grit.
As a former D1 mid-distance runner... I wish I had this guy as a coach in college. What a plethora of knowledge around this great sport. props

Walked a 100 mile in 47.5 hrs. No knee pain. 500 meters of running and knee pain..wish I could run.
Better add some weight and hit the hills because my ultra vest gets heavy
