Everytime I installed this server and tried to use a public domain name. I got errors. The public domain pointed directly to the router and proper port forwarding etc. Can you do a video where you setup a public domain name and point it to your internal server. That would be VERY helpful.

Hi charlesshopper! I do have a video on configuring Port Forwarding with my Pfsense box, which I do within my home network but would be the same practice with a public IP that you can check out: ruclips.net/video/mXxxnvthz8E/видео.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
Now there are two things that I can think of that may be the issue. To check if you configured your router correctly you can check if the port is open using this www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ with your public IP. If it shows as open and you have it pointed correctly to your router.
If it's open then the issue would be you're trying to access it from the same network but using a public DNS name. There are issues with that and it won't work unfortunately because of how networking works. So assuming that your case is you have your mattermost server and your PC that you want to access it on the same network. If you try to access mattermost via a public URL your PC will try to route out and then back into your network which in my experience usually fails. To confirm this being the case if you try it on your mobile phone on data ( as opposed to being on wifi which would be on the same network ) you should be able to hit it if everything is setup. The only way to solve this issue is essentially to do a split horizon DNS where if you're on the same network your PC points to your internal DNS server which has the public domain in it and would hit the internal IP of Mattermost as opposed to try to go externally.

Best I can tell, the free version isn't supported now. The docs seem to funnel you toward the paid versions. I couldn't get it set up with portainer.

That's unfortunate! I haven't been using it much recently, but if you're looking for another chat service, check out chatwoot in one of my recent videos: ruclips.net/video/eJa2RRGaxmU/видео.html
