I thought I had played the worst version of Strider on the PC Engine, but this is another level of terrible. At least I didn't have to play the game to witness it, we should all be grateful for your quick play through. I hope you had a good lie down after to recover.
It's such an empty and depressing port, and that's not surprising coming from Tiertex. Levels are pretty much devoid of obstacles and are missing AT LEAST half the enemies and bosses, and the big bosses that did make it in are completely static. This is most notable in stage 5 where all we get are the basic soldiers and the gorilla. You've also gotta love how the Master's just his sprite in the intro before Stage 1 starts. They could've at least tried to keep frantic nature of the original, but nope...
Yeah, after the pretty decent SMS Ghouls'n Ghosts, this was a gigantic letdown. I had high hopes when I heard it was coming which were dashed when I saw the screenshots and recognized the design, lol.
Yeah, they did a decent job with SMS Ghouls'n Ghosts. Strider is a tougher game to port to an 8-bit system than GnG, but they could have changed things up or added some unique elements to make it stand out.
I guess this atrocious port shows how little SEGA and or Capcom cared about a game that almost nobody in Japan would have seen, as the Master System was not popular there. This is of course a quick and dirty port, probably made cobbling together Amiga/ST assets plus some Z80 code Tiertex had already on hand due to the Spectrum version they had also made.
Definitely. I honestly have no idea why Sega bothered commissioning this port knowing what they'd be getting based on the other versions by Tiertex. They had to know the game would be a stinker.
I expected this version to be awesome and well, yeah........ I had the C64 version when I was a kid and tried to force myself to like it constantly because it was all I had :D
I hoped it'd be decent after seeing the SMS port of Ghouls'n Ghosts, but I had no idea it would be based on the Tiertex computer ports back when it was nee. I'd played the Amiga version first and it's weird how this version manages to be both better and worse than that one. The C64 version, well, it's mostly similar except for the slightly worse graphics and slightly better music!
I will never forget my disappointment when I was a kid and saw the box art of this game. Absolut garbage, I even cried and begged my parents to switch it for another game 😂 thankfuly we were successful
Hey! I got this for Christmas one year, lol! Seriously! I already had the Genesis version, I think I got this one for Christmas 92 (the year after it came out) as a stocking stuffer type deal. On the positive side, it would have been one game of MANY I got that year and even though it's bad I liked having it anyway. I was also a teenager at the time so the disappointment wasn't TOO crushing 😁
Tiertex are the masters of shit, they've only made a couple of decent games throught their pitiful existence (Toy Story Racing for Game Boy Color comes to mind). This could've been soo much better
Be fair. There's a ton of background tile variety in this game to go along with the black void and random noise; it's no wonder they needed a 4 Megabit cart. That's the TierTex seal of quality - just enough quality to make sure you notice they didn't ever really give a damn. Anyways, apparently, it's considered a decent game on Atari ST. Crusty Cobb, Steve [AtariCrypt], and Into The Vertical Blank, wouldn't just gaslight themselves. [this was a game I hate back in the day. ] Would they?
@@InglebardGaming Oh, please do rant away. The "professional" UK reviews of the Amiga/ST port of Strider were my disillusionment. 90+%?! I'll instantly click on anything you make on the subject of their infatuation with US Gold....'s advertising department. Especially since most people think that IGN is as bad as it gets. (Despite rating the newest Pokemon a 6/10.)
Ha, technically I got this for Christmas, too. For me it was after it had been price reduced and I was OK with it because it was interesting to see what they did with it. I was of course disappointed that it was so much like the Amiga version that I'd played a few years earlier.
This game is awful, yet if you put it in a worst master system games list some idiots would argue and say that it's a great game. Makes you hate the game even more just to spite people.

Hopefully, someday, I will recover from this trauma. But that day definitely won't be today!

I bet this would have been a nice port if Sega made it themselves. Sad treatment for the Master System

I'm glad it worked out for little you!
I can't imagine the major disappointment for the poor little kids that got this game for Xmas back in the day.

Yup that's why I always say "Tiertex, echhh" when I talk about them in my videos, lol

Don't even get me started on reviews from back in the day, especially in old UK mags😁

Most HK home brew and knock offs are more polished..
I've definitely played a few hk hacks/ bootlegs that were superior to sms Strider!
I got this for Christmas after being obsessed with the cover art in the shop. Imagine my disappointment on Christmas Day…

OH. MY. GOD. WHAT IS THIS ATROCITY 😮💨
This is what happens when you give a porting job to... TIERTEX (yucchhh).
@TrueSinister candy cabs rule
I just reviewed this game too, it was the worst couple of hours of my life. I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't stand this dog shit port.
Like any version associated in any way with Tiertex, it's junk.
*NEITHER THE WORST CONSOLE PORT! THIS IS THE WORST PORT OF STRIDER IN GENERAL!*
