It is very telling, when a big portion of the internet seems to be saying one thing, but most unity content creates say another. Thank you for the vid. It's one of many I've seen that are tackling this with very level heads.

Ultimately, open source is the best for developers, especially if the engine offers easy support for extensions. I do hope we see more investment in Godot after this.

If I had the money for investment, I'd support Godot 100%

I suggest focusing on Godot after you finish Cocoa Loco. It needs some work and learning a new tool takes time, but most of it's limitations have workarounds and Godot's node system and built-in editor makes everything much faster and easier.

I am so very disappointed in myself for only seeing this video now, even though I have notifications on. Either way, another great video Nathan.

That went deep and philosophical near the end. And it's fair comparing what Unity as a company is going through right now to what Epic Games have been through. Tim Sweeney said some agressive, polarizing things as well in his time. Epic as a company did some questionable things (Apple lawsuit, Tencent, EGS exclusives). Unreal's been all about virtual production for a long time, and kinda forgot about gamedev. I think your take was on point there. In the end, it's not about figures at the top, it's about development. I'm glad you touched on the need of separation between team that does the work, and the bussiness team.

Yay, another video of Nathan talking into a mic about a game dev topic, my cup of tea. Keep talking, and I'll keep listening!

Perfect timing! I was about to ask what you think about this on twitter.
I wanted to use Unity for a while now. Now I'm not so sure. It's not because Riccitiello opened his mouth too much (though this doesn't help). It's because as a result of this controversy, the internet dug up his business dealings and found out he made a merger with Ironsource. A *known malware distributor.* Not even acquisition or straight up bought. Merger. So my reason for not using Unity right now has a very strong security reason. The paint *is* poisonous.
Also, the so called good people working in Unity has been fired. This same CEO also fired the Gigaya team. The in-house engineers who built a game to teach and showcase Unity's features. Get this: the reason he fired the team was because it was too expensive. Whatever good people who've worked on the engine hasn't been a part of the team for a while.
It's a shame too since I heard it's good for 2D and mobile games which Unreal lacks. People also say Godot lacks a looot of things. Not like Blender with Animation. So now I'm kinda stuck. I'm not sure which engine I should familiarize myself now. The last 2 projects I made was with RPGmaker and with Photoshop/After Effect.
1 Final thing. You can't forgive someone who didn't apologize. Ask yourself this: Do you _really_ think Riccitiello apologize because he's truly sorry or that he's sorry he got caught?

i'm just angry they laid off the entire gigaya team and now do this. bad publicity after bad publicity.

They really haven't had a good run for the past few weeks, which gives me the impression they're gonna have to make more serious changes - whether for better or worse.

I'm having doubts switching to a different game engine. Questions like will Unity still be in demand? Will companies that use Unity switch to different engine? What engine would they switch if so. I just want to be relevant in the game industry as a programmer.

I must say I didn't expect to get a philosophy lesson as well as some great advice but I wasn't disappointed and I fully agree that you shouldn't judge a tool by a post a higher up made rather say this tool is good the devs have succeeded but also if there are problems then just remember to account for that I mean how dare you use something that is in proximity to something that isn't completely faultless you evil *insert super mean word here* and now I don't know what I'm on about but I hope you understand something I said in here cause I wright like I think very long and without pauses but have a good day
Edit: I forgot that on RUclips this thing * just bolds the thing its around...

I completely quit unity and switched to UE5 about a month before this iron source news, for me it was the frustration that built because of lack of proper tooling. wasted 6 months building character controller and a parkour system. Got the character controller down with help of animancer and motion matching but parkour was just impossible to implement with the stone age animation system unity has. It wasn't all wasted, most of my algorithms like OpenWorld ledge detection and combo/casting system can very easily be transferred over to c++ and unreal. Switching to unreal was such an upgrade, its unbelievable. Its like goku taking off his weighted cloths. graphics and the animation system is so much superior and easy to use, also unreal comes with its own water system for rivers ,lakes and oceans. In unity I was using KWS water system that had constant errors with HDRP. what a mess that was.
About switching, lets not kid ourselves, the writings on the wall. Unity has spent what ~4 Billion $ in last 2-3 years. that's enough money to completely overhaul the engine and release a unity 6,7 and 8. What does unity has to show for so far? the same ancient animations system, bad UI, UI toolkit builder thing that no one knows how to use and is confusing af. Look at the state pro builder is in vs level building tools UE5 has, its like blender lite. They dont even have a roadmap or discussion about exactly what they are doing with this ziva and weta stuff .Anyways you get the point. The way I see it, unity has severely mismanaged the engine. Anyone who has made games in both unity and unreal would be able to appreciate just how severely outdated unity is. Now is it completely useless yet? obviously not, if your project is fine with what unity has to offer than obviously you don't need to switch. However if you career/work depends on Unity engine, I would be concerned about its future.
