He also later on said he couldn't believe this was PIL's biggest hit since it was the most "spiteful" song he'd ever written.
After listening to thousands of songs with intelligible and unintelligible lyrics my ears just go for the beat. If the beat is good I'll listen to the lyrics. If that's good too then the song is a hit. To me this song got the juice so it's a hit.

We used this song in a play I did in high school. It had nothing to do with the plot really, except as something for some of the characters to lip sync to. They were supposed to be in a rock band for one of the scenes, (but at the same time they were also birds like the rest of the characters). It was a weird play. (Oh, and we picked it after hearing it on a local college station while painting the set.)

Then in the short span of about 3.2 seconds John Lydon sings This Is Not A Love Song while that 3.2 second guitar riff plays..... Then a silent stare at the rest of the table..... You're going to need more than that if you're going to have a song Johnny. John Lydon turns to the camera and smiles and says no I won't!
I really hope there is a circle of hell where this is played on repeat. No one is allowed into the circle save for anyone and everyone responsible for this catchy affront to humanity.
