Thank you for your video!!!!! My son is 19 and had his second kidney transplant 9 months ago. He was 2 when he had the first transplant so this was his first time having dialysis prior and our first time having Medicare. At 19 he is so blessed to have gotten a transplant but so unaware of how any of the insurance world works. I mean, it is a milestone that he has learned to stock his pill box, take all the meds and call in his prescriptions! As his Mom and advocate I am seeking all the knowledge and information I can so his future will not be so difficult in regards to medical bills and insurance as the chronic health conditions are enough. Your video has helped tremendously!!!
Sorry to hear that your son has been through so much medically so young. And awesome that he has your support to help him along his kidney journey. Thank you for watching the video(s) and appreciate your feedback.
Do you think you'll do an update to this video in light of the Jan. 1, 2021 change in Medicare Advantage? It's still so confusing to me. This is a great deed you're doing in sharing your videos.
Update starting Jan 1, 2021 in the U.S. - Medicare Advantage plans are now available to dialysis patients of all ages, not just those over age 65. Open Enrollment Period. From October 15 - December 7 each year, you can join, switch, or drop a plan. Your coverage will begin on January 1 (as long as the plan gets your request by December 7, 2020.
Did medicare + medicaid use tp pay for the rides to dialysis?? I know these medicare advantage plans usually allow one way transportation or else they offer 60 total trips for the year...which 60 trips is not enough for a dialysis patient.
@@timsatterfield9752 Not sure of the specific Medicare Advantage Plan you are looking at and which state you are in. It would be state or county specific and policy specific. Medicare itself on the Federal Level does not cover it under routine dialysis. However, Medicaid at the State level may. In IL, the application for transportation assistance are handled are the county, regional and municipality levels. I was able to get a free ride pass from the regional transportation authority here that also includes public transit within the City of Chicago and Commuter rail systems.. May townships here also have transportation available for seniors and those with disability like dialysis to get to/from treatments and medical appointments and a discounted taxi program for reduced fare vouchers. I drove on my own for in center dialysis and medical appointments and for PD and HHD, I did those at home, so no issues. I would recommend checking with your local / county level disability or senior services offices to see what may be available for you as a dialysis patient if you are using the Traditional Medicare/ Medicaid Plans as opposed to the Medicare Advantage Plan you are considering. Hope that helps!

This was a super informative video! I'm a medical student and this really helped me understand the process of how renal dialysis can be covered. Thanks!
Thanks for watching the video. The social workers at the hospital or dialysis clinics should be well versed in this. So happy you are watching this because we have been working hard to try and educate medical professionals also. When I was admitted to the hospital for different things, most did not even know different modalities of dialysis or that a patient can be trained to handle their own treatments at home.
Hi Kyle - Thank you so much for this video... I still have some questions regarding Medicare post transplant and no one seems to have lot of knowledge about it .. pls let me know if you would be able to help me .. thank you

So you either die by dialysis or you become homeless because dialysis. I currently am not working because of the effects of dialysis and I'm not on transplant list because I was requested to get a psychiatrist for the transplant list
Sorry to hear. If only fatigued after dialysis, it may be due to the machine running too fast or removing too much fluids too quickly. Is this in center hemo or home hemo? What is your BFR (blood flow rate) set to?? Other fatigue for dialysis patients may be due to other health issues, nutrition, anemia, low protein as possibility to look into with your care team and nephrologist
Hi! My Dad is traveling with us to Florida. He has Medicare & Medicaid. I know Medicare covers you in every U.S state. What about Medicaid? Is there an alternative for additional coverage when traveling to a different state? He will need dialysis while we travel.
Medicare & Medicaid covers the lease on his PD or HHD cycler and supplies. He can contact his supplier for a travel order on the solutions to be shipped with 3-4 weeks notice as "travel order" if doing in center hemo, he can work with his social worker to arrange a "traveling/ visiting clinic" near you for treatments and it will utilize the home clinic's insurance as they arre networked centralized billing.
Thank you for your question. Social Security Agency would need to make that deicision of approval for denial. In addition to medical condition eligibility criteria, if you do not have enough personal work credits, you may be eligible based on "You’re the spouse or dependent child of a person who meets either of the requirements listed above" ceriteria " I would recommend that you contact SSA and setup an appointment with a case worker to discuss your particular situation. In some cases, you may be eligibile under the criteria to be approved under State Medicaid Health Coverage from the your's state's Department of Health and Human Services in addition or in lieu of Medicare (Federal) www.medicare.gov/basics/end-stage-renal-disease

I am a dialysis patient and I am 39yo…do I still qualify for medical if I don’t have enough work history?
