Show was only one two years, not because the audience didn't like it, but because Barris wouldn't stop pushing the boundaries, so the execs took it off. One of the few game shows I actually enjoyed.

I worked in Hollywood for almost 20 years and have a friend that worked for Chuck Harris for 5 years.
He was one of the nicest and coolest people I have ever met.
He NEVER did drugs and he did not permit anyone using it on the show.
It was just all about having fun.
Gene Gene the Dancing Machine was the first Black Stagehand admitted into the Stagehand union (Local #33) in Hollywood.
He also worked regularly on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and was a spot light operator.
    He was a great guy.

@Kamikaze Yamamoto: Sorry to pop your bubble, but Barris stated in an interview when he was in his 60's, and retired, that he snorted coke before each Gong Show episode. He said he was shy and needed the coke to loosen up before going on stage. If you look closely, his nose looks a little red and his goofy behavior fits well with his admission.

Soo many laughs watching this show as a kid of the 70s. Unknown comic being on was always just the best. I remember how cold blooded some of the gongs were when someone was really stinking up the joint, but looked emotionally fragile, and a judge would be fighting to try to block one of the other judges already walking up to hit the gong. Just dying laughing when the gong finally hit no matter what out of mercy.

He always had a tv in his room. You know the kind on top of the high rolling cart. We would turn on the gong show and the teacher would watch with us. He was pretty amazed with what the censors allowed 😂. We got to watch about 15 or 20 minutes of it every day.
