if you actually care about chess on a 24-48 hour delay let met spoil it for you without warning because watching me is way more important
pin of shame! sorry mr gotham spoilt it for you :(
dont like this comment
You ok bud?
How's that pin of shame working out for ya?
Buddy... either you don't understand how time zones work or you don't care about chess as much as you say you do.
Would love a mini series going through each candidate player’s chances of winning. Big fan of the idea of looking at previous games they’ve played against each other
I've came here to write this exact comment.
Yes please
Very nice suggestion man!!!
Yes, this would be AWESOME!!
Great idea
This would be a good series: player spotlight, maybe starting with the Candidates and going onto famous underrated players?
Yasser!
agreed. van foreest and dubov have some wild games (even tho they're clearly not underrated)
There's gold here, Levy
Would love to see that series!
He kinda does! It isn't an official series, but if you look in the Playlist "chess history" there are several videos highlighting a single player using this or a similar format.
Important to remember that the majority of his opponents Ding, Duda, and Rapport have gotten better since these games were played ~5 years ago back when Hikaru was much more active. Nonetheless, still some exciting stuff!
Firouzja too
I wanna see how he faces Hikaru in classical
Gotham mentions this very thing at 10:35 in the video
@@danielsmith5032 a reminder doesn’t hurt
In what way was Hikaru more active 5 years ago? I was under the impression he does nothing but live and breathe chess.
I mean he beat Richard in the first leg not that long ago to be fair
I think people genuinely forget or don't know that Hikaru was once rated at number two in the world. Glad he's showing that he's still got skill at the game at the highest level.
I never knew this.
Yeah for a month
@@Mahoot Imagine thinking that isn't an insanely impressive accomplishment. Not even to mention that when he was de facto retired from classical chess, he was in the top 20 rated for a long time.
Some aren’t taking into account that in just the past two years alone the amount of chess content and quality information that’s been putout has evolved Hikaru and so many other players. The mindset and theory is on another level and if Hikaru keeps mindset he’s has past few months going to be some very good games
The thing is it looked like Hikaru was finished with classical for a couple years there. His streaming picked up and it didn't seem like he had the time or motivation anymore. This comeback run of his has been very impressive.
The ability to completely switch game plans to move from going for development to going for material back to going to development and convert into a winning endgame is just insane to me, it just shows how the super GMs are just looking at the board on a different level
I've gone from ~1000 to ~1500 in the past 18 month and have a much better understanding of the game now. The biggest realisation however is how little I still know about the game. There's no end to it. As good as super GMs are, they are still far from perfect even after dedicating their whole life to the game.
@@Axiomatic75 I have been 900 for soo long. How did you you do it?
Every Fourth day, I would like you to make a recap on Ding's journey to the candidates, Levy.
uhhh, doesn't it get chosen on 31 of may ?
@@hansvanoosterwijck5969 1st of May
@@jbc17c Well atleast i was right with the second part lmao xD
this format is incredible!! I would love to have same kind of things for other candidates: thanks you levy!
The 'part-time chess player' even qualifying to the candidates was unfathomable. Now he's actually a legitimate threat to the field 😳
Rooting for Hikaru 🍍
🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍🍍
The fuck you mean part time chess player, he streams it every day
Hikaru probably plays more chess than all of them, so no you can’t say part time
@@andredubbs4854 Hikaru says on his stream that he doesn't play chess professionally and only does it part time since his return. Even though he travels the world playing in tournaments. lol. Could be a stress coping mechanism to not acknowledge the effort or importance.
@@hamedrajhi you’re clueless. He plays casual chess. He doesn’t play nearly as much professional as any other super gm. He also hasn’t prepped for a opponent for a long time
This is my third favorite video you've ever done, behind the Chuky interview and Kasparov vs the world
That was awesome, Levy. I'd love to see the other candidates' records with one another. Makes the hype for the candidates so much more. Keep it up!
When's the candidates?
@@LK25278 June/July
Was thinking the same thing. It really hypes the event up!
This was definitely my favourite video in a while - I’d be in for this entire kind of thing again
This video gives off early 2021 Gotham vibes back when u did more vids like this, good stuff levy keep it coming
Great analysis and so helpful!
Really laying out the landscape of what to expect going forward.
Please do more!
this is some of the most interesting content you've put out recently! I'd love to see a whole series like this!
Great content. This and Ding Liren is good stuff.
Analyzing each candidate’s situation is a great idea and I’m excited to see it
I would love more vids like this highlighting on player and going through a bunch of key games. You should do one on all the candidate players. That gives you and us plenty of content!
Thanks as always for the great vids Levy never forget you are appreciated dude!
Much love,
Dan from NJ
Very excited to watch the candidates tourney. Such great stories being had. Hikaru "I literally don't care" Nakamura, Ding "passport please" Liren, Alireza Firouzja, Fabiano Caruana, and the field of beast players. Magnus better be ready, who ever gets through is coming for it.
If you think Magnus's opponent is "bad" then Magnus is his "dad"
Will you also make a video about Richard Rapport? It's been said that he is a really underappreciated GM, and I've been really enjoying his games the pased year
I'd love to watch that too!
Yeah, he won me over those last months, so im going to be cheering for him in the candidates.
I'm following him since 2014, he's my fav player( try his opening, the Jobava/Rapport System, it's very underrated)
Agreed
People seem to forget Hikaru defeated him in the 1st Berlin round of the Grand Prix 2022
I would love to see one on Richard Rapport’s chances. He seems to have improved so much in the last few years.
Love your content. I think Hikaru's form in previous years is tough to compare to this year since he's been playing with such comfort and maybe even swag.
Great video Levi! Good timing, entertaining and really making me hungry for that tournament recaps!
Keep up the good work!
An analysis of each candidate would kick serious ass Levy, can't wait for "The Road to the Candidates" series.
Deep down we all know that only levy can beat magnus
And its not just an opinion
Its a fact
Eric Rosen takes Magnus down every time they play ... :)
Levy is Harry and Magnus is Voldemort.
Levy you are absolutely amazing. The content you’ve been putting out on a daily basis is both entertaining and informative. Your content simply makes my days so much better. Thank you for all that you do! :)
Awesome video I would love to see more content about the other candidates in the runup to the tournament
Interesting concept! Keep making great content, Levy!
I would love a series of 7 more videos like this covering each candidate!
really intriguing video; I didn't know Hikaru had such a great record against all of these guys! given how old a lot of the games are, I would love to see a video talking a little bit about the evolution of the play of guys like Rapport or Ding over time -- what adjustments they have made in the last few years that have brought them to the elite level they are at now
This was such an amazing video. Really interesting to see how much the players have changed.
Levy makin' GREAT recaps!! Luv it! ( And Keep showing us Ding please)
Love it Levy! Id really like to see more vids about the candidates so I a chess noob like myself can get hyped about the tourney.
5:55 I've been playing with this idea lately. When I'm up material, I'm sometimes okay with trading it back to equal in exchange for a much stronger position.
It works out better for Hikaru than for me usually though.
Love this video, Levy! Want to watch more of this
Although it's 0:57am here in Hong Kong, I still have to watch Gotham's recap b4 sleep

Hey Levy I had the biggest grin after your Jackson Pollock reference :)) keep it up man
I would love to hear about each candidate and maybe about the candidates tournament in general with some of it's history or something like that.
great vid for once more. Would love to see also hikarus and magnus head to head score
Really wonderful video & games; Thank you! PS: Would love to see more collected games like this about other players
Hikaru, has masterfully become outcome independent, meaning he is not invested in the outcome anymore. This makes him a much more dangerous opponent. His skill makes him super dangerous but also being outcome independent magnifies the danger exponentially.
Ridiculous statement.
@@The_Invisible_Man How about you educate yourself on the concept before giving an opinion backed up with absolutely nothing.
@@roberttitan4497 lmao
Cringe, lol
i like this new serie's idea :)
Nice video man
Loving the head to head matchup concept!
Great job !!! I enjoyed it a lot and keep learning a lot from your explanations and analysis. Tx for all take care
Problem is, even if Hikaru wins this thing, he is going to face Magnus.
And at that point Hikaru will start to feel pressure again, especially against Magnus.
That is the point where I don’t see him winning anymore. And losing to Magnus in the end could destoy his build up Motivation and momentum.
In short: Winning the canidates and then losing to Magnus could destroy Hikaru mentally.
At that point he could, once again, quit classical chess.
But at the present time, hikaru has got the least pressure amongst all the players. He has got all the money in the world and hypothetically even if he qualifies and lose to magnus, he can easily come back to his real job of streaming and no one will say a thing.
Yup really enjoyed this. Wouldn't mind seeing more for each of other candidates!!
More of these please! Would love to see one for Duda, Firouzja, and Rapport
yes please. Make more head to head matches. Firouza vs. the rest of the field including magnus
Gracias, Levy. Awesome montage. One observation, though--- Yes, most of Hikaru's opponents you highlighted here have improved a lot through the intervening years. We can see that quantitatively via the FIDE rankings, especially if we contrast them with Hikaru's ranking "stagnation" due to his preoccupation with his main source of income (and fame) which made him "retire" from OTB competition for over two years. He essentially got lapped a few times while he took a very prolonged pit stop. Now that he's back in the field, it's obvious he did not really lose any step from that OTB absence. In fact, his endgame calculations and his uncanny ability to put his opponents in time trouble have improved dramatically. I cannot wait to see what happens in June when he starts facing off against Fabi, Ding and Alireza. Perhaps you can do analysis from Madrid, bro? It's a great place to honeymoon and stream...or so I heard. Stay safe! AL
I do believe all the online games help Hikaru more than people think. He gets to play a huuuuuge variety of openings all the time against strong GMs, which means he can effectively play against any opening at any time against anyone. Plus, you really really really do not want to face him in blitz tiebreaks after all that practice, which shows in his performances in those tourneys. In a way, out of everyone in this field, Hikaru is the one Magnus will be seeking a win against in Classical rather than being okay with taking it to shorter time formats if needed.
Absolutely loved this vid Levy; thanks for always providing us with quality content, even when you're dealing with your allergies, etc!
This was an amazing video Levy. I comment this a lot, but it's consistently true: you just keep on getting better
I am really looking forward ro the recaps of the candidates. Especially rapport, ding, and hikaru. I have no clue about chess as a mere 800 rated player. But you are most passionate about these games and that just pulls me in so much
Good job levy, thanks for reporting important chess games and news every time.
I really enjoyed this video, and it'd be fun to watch it for the other candidates as well :)
Cant wait for more videos. Highlights / best games of best chess player in the world.
Wishing you all the best Mr. Gotham
Thanks
MORE VIDEOS ON DING’s JOURNEY IF YOU HAVE THE TIME! He is killing it
incredible video man, thanks for what you do!
33:12 wow, I never knew that Hikaru and Fabiano have visited Croatia in 2019. so cool to know when I started to follow your channel and chess more closely.
I would love such a video on Duda especially. While people appreciate him as a major player, I think the fact that he's only 23 is lost on a lot of people, he could be a world champion in the future.
Really the alireza of Poland lol
Brilliant Levy. These chessumentaries will endure in the annals of chess history. Brilliant supportive informative unique and very thorough. You have a world beating format and style, as indicated by your viewing numbers.
I'd LOVE to see videos on Firouzja, Rapport and Radjabov
Watching these latest Grand Prix legs, Hikaru is playing in a more relaxed, risk taking way compared to the last few years. He's also often playing in a more human way, sometimes risking that his opponent will miss making the one right move in response. I think Magnus would find that one right move more often than Hikaru's other opponents, but it has been really enjoyable to watch.
I think fabi and Ian will still be the favourites, but I love rapport style very innovative and also I think he doesn't have any proper second or rather proper team, still he is in the candidate, with proper support he can achieve massive goals
Hey Gofam can you please make more videos of Caruana's best games like you did that Caruana 7-0 streak 🙏🏻
I saw one of Hikaru’s sacrificial moves before Levy showed it. In fact, as an 800 who saw the brilliant move, I may have prospects to get to 1500. Only if I work hard and study from the greats.
That was an awesome video, why is the Scandinavian defense not played by the GMs?
Hikaru has no idea how so much I'm rooting for him 🙏🏾
That jackson pollack refference was 👌
It is mostly probably going to be Ding ! He is just nailing
@Phub Bing lmao 🤣🤣
I’d love to watch a series of chances for people in the candidates, I think it’s a fun idea!
This should be the most exciting candidates tournament thus far. If either of Hikaru, Alireza and Ding can win it, that would be great (I'm a fan of the three), but I feel Liren has the best chance of dislodging Magnus. May the best man with though.
Yea as much as Hikaru has subverted my expectations so far, i still think he would get clapped by Magnus. same for Alireza at the moment. Ding is the most likely to give a good fight imo
we will see who is really the best at the candidates though i guess
@@phenix2403 Hikaru has no chance vs Magnus, he's just a fan favorite because he streams. Alireza is an incredible talent but probably not ready to challenge Magnus yet, so I also think Ding has the best shot.
I would like to see this kind of video for all the challengers. It's my belief that Hikaru has the best chanses of winning this, but Fabiano has better chanses to actually beat Magnus.
31:59 why does Fabiano not play knight e7
I think it wins on the spot
thank you Levy, you truly made chess to my hobby! much love from Berlin
Hikaru's in a much better headspace because he rediscovered the fun in chess by streaming it all the time. streaming is something he can do to just be himself and relax, while at the same time refining his skills as a world-class chess player. plus, look at how much more popular chess has become over the past few years, and Hikaru is definitely a major player in that. also, he's much more confident in his skills after all the online tournaments he won. Hikaru is thriving
i think this is as good as a chance as he will probably ever have to face Magnus for the title. and imagine the hype if we get our Magnus vs Hikaru match that we so desperately want
Awesome content as always! When are we going to see Benji taking chess lessons?
The Candidates!! Nice review of the match-ups Hikaru faces. 2022 could be an uphill journey for him. The line-up he faces now will feature 5-6 players in the peak form of their respective careers - not their form of 2015-2017. Going to be a massive tournament. Thanks for the review and hard work!
Awesome contents Levy, as always!!
Yes Levy, this is a cool idea to cover progressive matches of specific players. I like it.
Levy, thanks for all the amazing videos. I'm a 50 year old guy that knows very little about chess. You have a a way of making it super exciting! These tournaments really should consider you for the job of commentator. Keep it up!
I think there is a bit of a bias here with Hikaru's record against all of these guys which is that, except for Radjabov, Hikaru is older than all of them and all of them except Fabi joined the very top quite lately. Nepo improved his rating almost continuously since 2016, getting over 2770 in 2018 only. Ding only started destroying everybody in 2018. Alireza is obviously too young to even be counted. And Duda and Rapport also joined the top 20/2750 elo mark recently (2019 for both of them).
So it's normal that they all have a losing record against Hikaru: they weren't at their peak yet for all the games shown in this video. They're still great games and those records still have some meaning, but we shouldn't overstate what they are.
Would be interesting to cover the betting odds (if their are any) for all us gamblers out there.
the jackson pollock's reference was savage
Great Video. It should be a good preview of what's to come.
Loving these. If you keep this up, us random noobs will have some basic understanding of each of these players' styles and strengths when the candidates tournament starts!
Suggestion: Cover some of Hikaru's games from the 2016 Candidates!
Would love to see more games of fabiano . Excellent games .
I would watch more videos covering all the candidate's players
Another great video gj man. Make a list of YOUR favorite candidates ;)
Am I the only one who thinks that the candidates' tournament is more interesting than a WC match?
probably because no matter who challenges magnus, chances are, magnus will win.
They're different. The candidates is a clash of 8 chess titans in a round robin, an exiciting event where mixups and standings rollercoasters can happen, a brawl of epic proportions.
The world championship is the ultimate duel, the battle of attrition between arguably the two greatest current chess players in each iteration - in my view, the players at least in the Carlsen era have always been at their highest highs when challenging him and thus been worthy opponents, and watching that play out across a dozen games or more is something very special.
Last WC was a circus so yea, candidates is better imo
Video suggestion: All "one of the most savage moves I've ever seen in my life".
@2:50 apparently GMs can sometimes forget pawns can move twice in a row. He literally plays a3 a4.
“SACKING the Knight on e6” @19:28 got me rolling 🤣
What I’m waiting for is finally a Hikaru vs Alireza matchup in classical
Love this video idea. If you have time for the other players, please do make videos. I would like to watch their games too.
Yeah I like it it builds up some hype without lying or really over exaggerating. It gives a neat "Story" To follow and makes me invested in what's going on. Sure It's chess a bad day during the candidates can make it all go nowhere but still. There is nothing wrong with propping people up that deserves it.
It would be really cool if you did something similar for some other candidates.
Keep up the great work Levy!
More of Hikaru explained by Levy, the peoples Champ.
the most excited candidates i think that has ever happened, can't wait for these legends to go to battle. prediction is Ding but im not counting out Hikaru, gotta show some love to the guy that got me into chess 👏
this was an excellent video Levy!
