Two things; I had an old Transit, just as bad as this, sitting in the corner of my yard. I spent a week fabricating, grinding and welding. When I reconnected the battery after the extensive work the immobiliser would not turn off. Nobody could trace the fault. I held on to that van for a whole year as I wasn't happy about doing all that work, but in the end I scrapped it, The thing just wouldn't even turn over. The second thing is this. There are all these tutorials on here about how to weld properly blah, blah, blah and the fella is in an immaculate workshop with two pristine pieces of metal on a pristine workbench and he does a pristine weld and says that's how it's done. The moron should get under a rusty car pasted with seam sealant and underseal and weak metal that you have to chase back for miles, and try doing all this whilst laying on his back or his side with red hot blobs landing in his ear canal or setting his shirt on fire, and then he can give me a tutorial on welding. This video is real life welding, getting a face full of grit from the grinder and red hot metal going down your sleeve. This is a proper tutorial, not some namby pamby arse with a couple of squares of metal on a bench. Excellent video. Thank you.
I have done something similar on my van,whilst welding in new bits I managed to find part of a wiring loom,a rough edge on new metal rubbed through 4 wires. i had immobilser issuesand no light problems. no idea the wires were there until i found them.
nothing wrong with that mate, looks perfectly normal, the hardest part is stop starting to keep the heat down and checking for fires inside the cab, looks bang on! big job
I felt compelled to comment on this video. To all the people putting negative comments this is how every garage in the uk will weld your car to get it through its mot although probably not as good as a job this guy did. Most of these idiots putting those kind of comments probably never picked up a welder in their life just watched some school teacher in a brown leather suit with full head gear on welding 2 pieces of nice shiny steel. Guy did a great job of getting an old rust bucket back on the road probably for use as a work horse not a show pony! Well done mate top video and work keep em coming!
Hold on mate if he doesn't get negative comments on how bad it is how's he gonna improve from his mistakes I wanna know the type of set up he's using so I can point him in the right direction such as if he's using cored wire then he's holding it too close the work piece or not a clean welding surface then its gonna produce a bird shit weld and has a tendency to break since it becomes brittle which in a couple months it breaks somewhere vital then he's not only gonna injure himself but other drivers and saying all garages weld like this is a piss take in it self not all garages weld like this at all raking all garages together because you've had some bad welds done to your vehicle by garages doesn't make them all bad. The bottom line is your a fucking idiot mate
Nicely done. Some tricky spots to access there. For keeping an old van going who cares how it looks as long as it's solid. It's good to see people not just needlessly scrapping these vehicles and instead putting a bit of money into them to keep them on the road.
READ BEFORE COMMENTING Here are a few questions that I will answer before anyone comments them- Why didn't we replace the whole panel instead of patch-working them like we have? First, replacing whole panels would have been very costly-the costumer didn't want to spend huge amounts of money on it as the van was getting worse every year. Secondly, the van isn't worth over £1000. Why not buy a new/worn van? New vans can cost £10000>. Worn vans can be risky to buy, they may look good on the outside but underneath can be repaired terribly-sealant. Lastly, Why don't all the welds look perfect? Ultimately the ambition is to make it MOT standard, fully seamed for strength not to look pretty -shown from steel discoloration from the welds penetrating the metal. Thanks for reading! You did a good job editing. As far as the "pretty" welds, you can't just weld in a continuous seam folks, as it would warp terribly. You have to do what was done here. It is a series of tack welds so that the metal does not get too hot.

This is what I did my old Transit. Patch it every year to get it through MOT then threw it away when it got too rotten. It wasn't worth doing properly but it gave me time to save for a new van. Nice work.
Very good video, I’m currently Welding up my transit mk5 camper, it seemed I’ll never get to the rot but I’m nearly there now, but with a little help from seam sealer and under seal it’s quite tidy now to go on a few more years. I probably won’t have it then, I’ve had it 12 years so I’m attacking the rust for the second time, a lot of what I welded to before has now rotted. But that’s transits for you. Thanks for the video🙂👍
Nothing wrong with that repair, its exactly what you do with a vehicle that age and condition. Ive just bought a lady riva, 1990, its solid as a rock, 15 tons of Russian pride.
Doing the same cheap fixes on my transit ,welding most of the rear underside wheel arches included and sills one of them complete, I take my hat off to you sir well played, I’ve been welding mine on and off for 3 weeks, was seeing light at end of tunnel and believe it or not started to think about giving in ? Beautiful job pal 😁 , i rember the transit tipper my dad gave me and my brother to start a business with , he said it was only a couple of pin holes and some bubbles , ( I'm shure he really new lol ) but after chasing both arches , both door sills and along the rear window of the bulkhead we finally finished so we thought lol , after removing the ply out the buck I almost fainted haha , it was only ply in the buck and the strucktrall support rails , wish I had taken pictures now but the I wanted to just finish and be done , I appreciate your work and can relate bloody good work 👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Ooh that's a trip down memory lane for me .. having welded many like this all religious vehicles .. all extremely holy .. just when you think you've found good metal it falls off so the plate gets bigger and you add more and more . I did wonder on a few I did wether it was worth it in the long run as there seemed to be more patch than original bodywork . And also an addendum for some although there are many spare panels available it's not cost effective as your only using a small section so like a lot of the ones I had ..a sheet was the better option cheers for sharing
OH Doe's this bring back memories of the old motors I have welded in the past rebuilt an MGB GT, Spitfire,Ford Zodiac, etc etc I'm to old to do that now.

Great work. when summer is approaching i will start on the rust repairs on my volvo 945 turbo. i have to patch up where the battery sits, i have to weld in a new inner and outer rocker panel on the right side, and i have to reinforce the jacking point rear left as it sounds crunchy when i jaked up the car with it.
The amount of welding needed was ridiculous! Give it another 2 MOT's and it'll be more patches than original van lol I've always wondered why Ford can't get it right with their vans, they're either bullet proof engines and gearboxes and terrible bodywork or good bodywork but terrible engines and gearboxes.
MK6 Transit. I'm replacing the RH footwell, inner sil, and outer sil, inner and outer front wheel arch and discovered holes in the main rails where the engine mount is. As a design engineer myself (in electronics), I've come to conclusion they are designed to rust. Just the way it goes together allows water to run into the seams, crap, and the fact that they aren't sealed no wonder it rots from the inside out.
Thanks mate. So it would probably be around a weeks work so £400/500 (mabye more) including materials, but as you know- as soon as you start in to in a small rust patch becomes a massive rust hole!
I've had to get a few total heaps of shite through MOTs, one little gem I've learnt is that it's only the rust that causes it to fail most of the time, i have got cars through by just cutting the rusty bits off! Sounds so ridiculous but TECHNICALLY no rust, no problem as far as the MOT guidelines say! Also if you have an old rubber mounted windscreen and perhaps either the wipers/washers or even if the windscreen has a bad crack or something you can remove the screen aslong as you remove the wipers as well it'll pass! Nuts!
When you put new metal on the van, how do you protect the inside of it, like you can paint the exterior but what about the inside of the box sections??

Feel the pain! The prep work is a right pain and welding to paper thin metal is no fun! What gauge sheet was that as you used tin snips to cut it. Think I used 1.2mm for the panels and 3mm for chassis work. Good work.
+Zed Man Hi, glad you liked it! We used 0.8mm steel because the steel was so weak. The 3mm would end up falling off, haha. Will have another transit repair soon!
Obviously, not top class welding, but i tell you what you got it done! Most people havent had a go at welding, they think its easy but in honesty you havent got much metal to weld to and it never penetrates that great anyway, so why bother making it look pretty. Especially when the van is a bit of a pig anyway. What advice i will give to you though is, you can do alot with chemical metal! Obviosly you cant make plates up lol, but to make things appear neater, chemical metal and masking tape with a dabbed finish from a paintbrush would make the finish you have look pretty perfect. It really tidies it up, trust me.

Just welding my 1999 transit. mines like yours but worse. I ended up replacing the out riggers with 50x100 boxsection as there was nothing to weld to as it was so bad. These vans were the best ever produced just my opinion. Sadly they are not worth alot of money so are not worth spending the time and money to weld them to a high standard. So long as they are safe. Thats all what matters.
Don't know why Ford has never bothered to protect their vans from rust.other manufacturers have 2018 still biggest rust buckets.I've a mk6 transit myself, better get welder?.

Ford vehicles are among the worst rusters in my experience, if the cavities behind those welds have'nt been sprayed with wax i guarantee the rust will soon be back.
+westland whirlwind Yeah, tell me about it. It should really be waxed before they get anywhere near this bad. We would expect for the fact that this van has tonnes of holes everywhere so I can't see it lasting, plus it isn't worth the money. Though hopefully the schutz should take it up to next year.
I fully injected my new van (55) 2006 mk6 from new, as I have had transit vans for years, I still have the van today 2019, starts and runs great. but as from last year, I have had to replace the rear valance, the outer sill, with inner repair, hanger brackets, and just now the drivers sill, its showing rust on the front arches, and along the body side, I'm more then gutted as I have maintained the underside for years, and it did not fully work, I have other 20 year old vehicles that I waxoled and dimatroled many years ago and they have been ok, it must be the steel they used, just like my Nissan d40 that fell apart,
Do you repair transits in your shop though? If you tried to weld anything heavier than sheet to this van you would end up replacing the whole chassis. The owner isn't prepared to pay for work like that-that would add weeks more on to a already hard job. We do try to weld 3mm where possible to structural pieces but on transits its nearly impossible. After all it went through MOT fine anyway
I've just started MIG welding as I have a 19 year old trannie(not the chick with a dick type) that I bought from a mate for £200 and I can say that it is not as easy as these people doing demo's on a workbench would have us believe.It's not for me about getting a pretty weld but a good strong one but what a hobby to take up or even a career if that's your thing.If you love welding and you love vans then buy a transit,you'll never be short of something to weld up.🤣🤣🤣 Good video mate.Respect to you.

Where I live in San Diego California, rust like this is not a problem, but Northern areas of the US where it snows, and salt is spread on the roads, rust is a terrible problem. My daughter wanted a car, but I didn't check it close enough for rust. I think some areas were covered with body filler, and now the rust is showing through a bit. The biggest problem I've had is trying to remove rusted fasteners when I do a repair such as brakes, or strut replacement. BTW: My Grandfather Langley was from Jarrow, county Tyne and Wear.
The dreaded body filler, haha. Which usually hides about a full day of work on literally paper. Yeah over here in the UK we tend to get a lot of rain so hence the rust.

Engineering in Gear £53 for that section..seems crazy to patch it when panels are so cheap
Isn't my van so it wasn't my call. The van was scrapped a few months ago anyway. If you are gonna replace one panel you may as well replace them all

My deepest sympathys, Ive just finished my Mk6 2001. I found it was easier to cut out the rear floor pan and weld everything from above. well done !

I do same kind of repairs good job just bought a plasma cutter $500 sure makes it so much faster,and easier.
Yeah we have a plasma cutter aswell but can be risky depending where you are working

Obviously, not top class welding, but i tell you what you got it done! Most people havent had a go at welding, they think its easy but in honesty you havent got much metal to weld to and it never penetrates that great anyway, so why bother making it look pretty. Especially when the van is a bit of a pig anyway. What advice i will give to you though is, you can do alot with chemical metal! Obviosly you cant make plates up lol, but to make things appear neater, chemical metal and masking tape with a dabbed finish from a paintbrush would make the finish you have look pretty perfect. It really tidies it up, trust me.
Nice job! Some people do not understand . work van get it dun and on the road show van get it dun but make it look very nice ! But more cash .

Just welding my 1999 transit. mines like yours but worse. I ended up replacing the out riggers with 50x100 boxsection as there was nothing to weld to as it was so bad. These vans were the best ever produced just my opinion. Sadly they are not worth alot of money so are not worth spending the time and money to weld them to a high standard. So long as they are safe. Thats all what matters.

Used 2mm or 3mm in my Transit. Especially around the spring hangers

Ford vehicles are among the worst rusters in my experience, if the cavities behind those welds have'nt been sprayed with wax i guarantee the rust will soon be back.
+westland whirlwind Yeah, tell me about it. It should really be waxed before they get anywhere near this bad. We would expect for the fact that this van has tonnes of holes everywhere so I can't see it lasting, plus it isn't worth the money. Though hopefully the schutz should take it up to next year.

I fully injected my new van (55) 2006 mk6 from new, as I have had transit vans for years, I still have the van today 2019, starts and runs great. but as from last year, I have had to replace the rear valance, the outer sill, with inner repair, hanger brackets, and just now the drivers sill, its showing rust on the front arches, and along the body side, I'm more then gutted as I have maintained the underside for years, and it did not fully work, I have other 20 year old vehicles that I waxoled and dimatroled many years ago and they have been ok, it must be the steel they used, just like my Nissan d40 that fell apart,

Do you repair transits in your shop though? If you tried to weld anything heavier than sheet to this van you would end up replacing the whole chassis. The owner isn't prepared to pay for work like that-that would add weeks more on to a already hard job. We do try to weld 3mm where possible to structural pieces but on transits its nearly impossible. After all it went through MOT fine anyway

I've just started MIG welding as I have a 19 year old trannie(not the chick with a dick type) that I bought from a mate for £200 and I can say that it is not as easy as these people doing demo's on a workbench would have us believe.It's not for me about getting a pretty weld but a good strong one but what a hobby to take up or even a career if that's your thing.If you love welding and you love vans then buy a transit,you'll never be short of something to weld up.🤣🤣🤣 Good video mate.Respect to you.

Where I live in San Diego California, rust like this is not a problem, but Northern areas of the US where it snows, and salt is spread on the roads, rust is a terrible problem. My daughter wanted a car, but I didn't check it close enough for rust. I think some areas were covered with body filler, and now the rust is showing through a bit. The biggest problem I've had is trying to remove rusted fasteners when I do a repair such as brakes, or strut replacement. BTW: My Grandfather Langley was from Jarrow, county Tyne and Wear.
The dreaded body filler, haha. Which usually hides about a full day of work on literally paper. Yeah over here in the UK we tend to get a lot of rain so hence the rust.

Yep. They sorted it with later models by galvanizing the chassis but the engines are terrible compared to these ones.

Not exactly sure-don't own one myself just repairing them. The very recent ones seem to have galvanised chassis. I would guess 2016+

if u thin the schutz with petrol it goes on much easier
We usually thin it with cellulose thinners to thin it out, sometimes we prefer to put a thicker coating on

well I had mk 4 just sold it it was great shape for a 93 model chassis was solid I have mk 6 van o6 plate its a rust buket to my mk 4
+ace crusader Now they have went opposite way, from a good engine with a bad chasis to a bad engine with a good chassis. You can never win with transit vans, haha
