- Опубликовано: 10 июл 2024
- In the 1st century BCE, Romans incorporated legendary Trojan lineage into their mythology, claiming that Romulus and Remus were descendants of prince Aeneas of Dardanos. In this episode, we go through both mythology and history of the Trojan Dardanians, as we give insight to who these legendary people really were.

Aeneas according to the Eneid, when he arrived at the region of Latium, he encountered Evander an Arcadian hero who had created the first settlemement in the Pallantine Hill (called after Evander's Arcadian birth city of Palladion). Aeneas recalling their common Arcadian origins of his ancestors from Dardanus, asked Evander's help, who gladly offered him. For this reason many centuries later, Roman Emperors honoured Arcadia, and the city of Palladion. I believe a video about Evander would be cool!

@@jetonbalidemaj lol… ok. Have you studied Epics in an Italian school? Maybe time to revisit the lessons… 😊 the rich always commissioned work from artists to elevate their status, and claim godly lineage. Theyr we’re just scoundrels with a mask on.
It always amazes me how the Romans had no problem rewriting history to make them appear first or best in everything especially regarding the Greeks, while most of the patrician families seemed to love all things Greek. (Particularly during the late Republic era)
I think that’s common in almost every society
Yes, it amazes me too. It's common to integrate your own culture into the "upper culture", in this case the Greek one (later would be things related to religious Judeo-Christo-Muslim beliefs rather), but it is the shamelessness of lacking roots and rewriting other people's legends to insert themselves in them what makes Romans peculiar maybe. The most clear case is Hercules's travels to the West, which never went through Italy in the Greek version but actually via the shorter North African route. But maybe this is partly to blame to the Macedonians first of all, who spread the cult of Hercules (or should I say Herakles rather) all around and one can only imagine which legends made Buddha and Hercules best friends in Uzbekistan, maybe Son Goku?
Wow, some pleb is larping as my best friend and talking meretrix on Mater Roma. 🙄
Romans aren’t a monolith, they didn’t all think the same
The cause of the problem is that we consider the Romans as a separate nation. This is wrong. Rome from the Greek word Ρώμη which means strength, and Romans Ρωμαίοι means the strong ones, at the beginning of the founding of Rome were Greeks, Etruscans, Latins, Sabines, etc.
It is therefore natural for them to associate the foundation of Rome with the Greek myths, which the Etruscans had already accepted ,and many Greek and Latin historians state that the Sabines had a Lacedaemonian origin.
Demaratus (Greek: Δημάρατος), frequently called Demaratus of Corinth, was the father of Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, the fifth King of Rome, the grandfather or great-grandfather of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last Roman king, and an ancestor of Lucius Junius Brutus and Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, the first consuls of the Roman Republic.
Demaratus was a Dorian nobleman and a member of the Corinthian house of the Bacchiadae. Facing charges of sedition, in 655 BC he fled to Italy, with the retinue of his court , according to tradition settling in the Etruscan city of Tarquinii, where he married an Etruscan noblewoman.
According to tradition, Demaratus introduced Greek culture to mainland Italy, and brought potters from Corinth; Greek potters worked at Tarquinii and its port, Gravisca.
Pliny the Elder and Tacitus reported that Demaratus brought literacy to the Etruscans.

Fascinating I had heard of these peoples but did not know much except for the fact you can play them in A Total War Saga: Troy.
Thank you for the wonderful video! Greetings from Çanakkale!
Fun fact: Canakkale is where Dardanos was in antiquity
7:42 Ancient writers, such as Gaius Julius Solinus and Diodorus Siculus, repeatedly linked the Dardanians to the people of Troy.
"The running forth of Italy through the Liburnians (which are a people that came out of Asia), extends to the foot of Dalmatia, and Dalmatia *unto the border of Illyria, in which coast Dardanians have their dewlling, a people that descended of the line of Troy*, but grown wild and savage, and degenerated into barbarous manners." - Gaius Julius Solinus
"Of these children, Dardanus, who was a man who entertained great designs and was the first to make his way across to Asia in a make-shift boat, founded at the outset a city called Dardanus, organized the kingdom which lay about the city which was called Troy at a later time, and called the peoples Dardanians after himself. *They also say that he ruled over many nations thoughout Asia and that the Dardani who dwell beyond Thrace, were colonists sent forth by him*." - Diodorus Siculus
That's not really all that trustworthy. They didn't only live way later but they also most likely forced a connection due to the name and nothing else. The Greeks earlier had also connected the Persians with the mythical son of Perseus , Perses. That doesn't make the Persians connected to the Greeks. Until actual physical evidence is found in anatolia the Dardanoi there remain their own thing.
Big request lad but... Could you reconstruct a diet of a Mycenaean warlord for the few of us to emulate to grow big and strong like the Homeric heroes?
Whatever is available. Lots of olives, meat, fish, bread and wine. No beer, that's Egyptian.
@@LuisAldamiz The Celts and Germans were even bigger and stronger. For thousands of years they drank copious amounts of beer, as did the Pontic ancestors of the Greeks.
@@IanHunter-xc1po - We don't know that (unless you do have a source). For example, the Dutch (who count as "Germans" or better: Germanics), used to be quite short and only recently have become the tallest people of Europe. Nutrition does matter.
Also I'm not sure that beer was that common in Europe back then, Atlantic peoples often drank cider (apple wine) rather, while Nordic ones were famed for the mead (fermented honey). Anyway, even if the Celts drank beer, it was a pun and nothing else.
@@LuisAldamiz I agree that nutrition does matter, but from all the skeletal remains dug up over the last 100 years or so, clearly Northern Europeans, and their steppe predecessors, were taller and more robust than Neolithic (and later Iron Age/Classical Mediterranean) peoples, as were WHG. I'd put the WHG being taller (relatively speaking) down to a largely meat diet and that of Bronze-Iron Age Northern Europeans down to a largely dairy diet. What's more, Caesar was 5' 6" and considered tall for a Roman. The Gauls were said to tower over the Romans, as were the Germans. Though as you were being a little light-hearted, so was I with my initial reply. It's all good. 😉
@@IanHunter-xc1po I can only imagine that they ate more meat or other protein, especially in childhood. It cannot be beer for sure.
Modernly I collected data from nearly all European countries and there is a lot of nuance to the typical idea that Northern Europeans, are taller. Scandinavians, Germans, Dutch and Lithuanians are tall for both genders but also are Slovenes and Croats, while the shortest men on average include some southern populations like Bulgarians, Portuguese and Italians but also French. Swiss and Hungarians. For women it is even more reverse, as some other shortest ones are from the far North (Britain, all three nations and Finland), while in the south only Bulgaria is in the short segment.
Some populations are clearly affected by changes in diet, a well known case are Galicians, who shifted in my youth from being the shortest of all Spain to the tallest ones in the young segment. I already mentioned the Dutch, I believe, another well known case but at European scale (longer timeline though). On the other hand it's also well known that increased protein did not make Japanese much taller, so genetics plays a role as well.
Never knew the Dardanians were distinct from the Trojans! The explanation about the city of Dardanos and its possible older origins was fascinating. Great video!
7:47 I knew that name sounded familiar.

The Dardanoi were linked by ancient Greek and Roman writers with the Illyrian people of the same name who lived in the Balkans (i.e. the Dardani), a notion supported by a number of parallel ethnic names found both in the Balkans and Anatolia that are considered too great to be a mere coincidence (e.g. Eneti and Enetoi, Bryges and Phryges, Moesians and Mysians).
no they weren't lol you can't prove that all the people you mentioned were connected. Only the Phrygians left archaeological proof of their origins in the balkans the rest are fairy tales
The 2700 BC migration theory of Herodotus would be around the time of the biblical Nimrod.. It would explain why they are all connected.
Gaius Julius Solinus (latin geographer) on the illyrian dardanians:
"... hominess Troiana prosphia in mores barbaros efferati."
"... men of the Trojans driven into barbarous manners."
(Solinus II, 51 D 2).

Apparently one group of Proto Indo Europeans settled to Anatolia at least to Egeian sea going southern of Caucassus, while other went through Pontic steppe to Europe. One group remained on east shore of Black Sea. And they certainly had some level of contact among themselves and with branches which settled to Iran and India, and traces of that knowledge was left in Greek mythology.

Yeah, there are the core-Greeks, and others, spread mainly all over the eastern mediterranean coasts. It is possible, that the Trojans were Greeks, cause after all, the core-Greeks are known for civil-war, and not for attacking foreigners... The Makedonians weren´t probably always greek, but first since 800bc. The southern Greeks were mad at them, when the Persians came, cause unlike "real Greeks", who never yield, the Makedonians have straight away surrendered to the Persians. The Greeks were hellenizing the surrounding countries very early, thus creating buffer-zones of hellenized allies, in case of a foreign attack. And so, they also had more Greeks to make civil war with, like with Troy, maybe... When civil war didn´t prove enough, they invented Democracy, so that they can dispute and fight also in their everyday political lifes... ;-) (instead of uniformly following a king´s commands, in their respective Polis)
Greeks kept the Persians at bay for 150 years after the failed persian invasions (by destroying their ports together with their fleets). But only the Makedonians ever attacked a foreign nation, to my understanding, and that´s why the makedonian Greeks never "felt" exactly the same as the southern Greeks.
I always found that correct: before you spread your culture to others (especially before you spread it with violence), you should take care of matters in your own home itself. That´s why civil war always comes before war against foreigners. War against foreigners comes after you´ve cleaned up your own realm. Sadly, barbarian Romans weren´t cultivated enough to understand such, and attacked Greece.
Greek was the main spoken language at the time like how were talking English but that doesnt mean Macedonians and Trojans were Greek just like im not American or Englsih but I cant speak for your nationality.
@@jetonbalidemaj We are talking about 3.500 years ago. Greek wasn't yet by any mean the lingua franca back then, until Alxander the Great, a thousand years later, as a Greek from Argive origins established the Greek language as lingua franca.
@@jetonbalidemaj Greek was the main spoken language since 400-300bc, and not at 1200bc. Aside to that, the Greeks really had countless colonies, mainly since 800bc, but also before... There were very little people back then, so, when the greeks were building a new colony, there werent any people around in the whole region, most of the time, unlike the british and the french, spanish austrians, who had to subdue people, in order to colonize them. Greeks were colonizing the country, that was, most of the time, anywa not yet inhabited.
@@jetonbalidemajGreek was important language throughout the Mediterranean but Macedonians weren't a colony, their land was in mainland Greece and participated at the Olympics, and in all other panhellenic festivals....questioning the greekness of Macedonians is ridiculous since if Macedonians weren't Greeks despite all that then no one else was also Greek in Greece.
About Trojans we don't know...they don't seem to be hellenic but very much connected, since some Greek names appeared in the Hittite texts about Trojans. The main understanding from the historians is that the city of Troy often made marriages - alliances with Mycenaeans, thus the Greek names on then
