    One of the things I like about Tom is that he isn't trying to show off like so many others. His intent is to actually help us learn how to play the guitar. Good on you, Tom, for keeping your ego out of your teaching videos!

    I'm 63 and started playing at age 7. Grew up in Memphis TN in the 60s- early 70s, surrounded by fabulous music and musicians -- many I grew up and went to school with who went on to great careers. Had a couple of moderate strokes that severely affected my left hand and my brain signals to my hands and quit for about 10 years. Got back into it as "therapy" for chronic pain, depression, and combat PTSD (I spent many years in the Army.) Like Harry Chapin sang, "Music was his life, it was not his livelihood. He didn't know how well he sang [or played] it just made him whole." I strongly agree!

      I’m right there with you- I’m gonna be 70 y/o in Nov. Like you… 4 years military . Enlisting in ‘70-75 … and I come from an “ALL” military family… I was able to do so with my best friend , on the “system buddy” system and besides ; We knew that any further education would have to be on our own.GOD only knows our parents couldn’t pay for it ‼️Sooo , we went in to get the G.I bill….. I became a Medic-&- he went into
      radar and eventually Air Traffic Control ! But , I got a an all expense paid trip to Vietnam /1 year!!! The thing we were trying to avoid‼️We figured they would just keep using the “Nat. Guard & Draft , but 1st year just straight out of basic for me ‼️ I came back and started school- UAB… I’m in Alabama . Got my degree and went to Nursing School !! I didn’t know there was such a thing as a MALE NURSE‼️Sorry for rambling about that ‼️
      NOW , the bug has hit me and after many attempts in the past , I want to try to at least learn to “strum” a little bit ‼️ So you hang in there and I’ll do the same ‼️ I know I’m probably not suppose to write a long post here but just wanted to let you know know , YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I have to barrow a guitar to try to practice-hahaha…‼️
      … I envy the people that do these videos- they get free stuff to critique all the time !! I’ll get my own , someday ,🤷🏼‍♂️‼️
      LOL- I know I should have gotten one before I retired (17-18yrs ago)
      Good Luck , my friend !
      Richard- take care 🇺🇸!

    Thanks Tom! I'm 65 and started 18 months ago. I learned the hard way that setting up your guitar is the first thing you should do. It makes it so much easier to play. If you are handy at all you can do it your self. There are many articles and videos on the web that show you how to do it. Although I'm progressing slowly, I see this as a life long journey.

    Class of 61 again. I work on the electric. Got ham strung on the strings being almost a half inch at the body of the guitar. I would plug in an amp, when I was alone at the camp. One of the issues was not knowing it needed to be set up correctly. Got that info from a builder here on YT University. Thank YOU.

I got one for an unexpected Christmas present last year. It really helps my guitar playing. Since it is smaller it’s easier to bring places. I recommend the Outdoor Ukulele. They are a high quality plastic and They are very durable (I am not affiliated with them in anyway other than a customer). I am more likely to take it places or outside.

    Hey Tom, my Dad was born when that guitar was born. Yep 94 years young. Unfortunately he had to give up playing due to a stroke. I just picked up my guitar at 60 and really enjoy it. However, due to my Fibromyalgia my fingers hurt real quick so no more than 45 min playing. Also the Fibrofog makes it hard to learn things. I put Extra Lt strings on and that has helped quite a bit. I started on nylon but that hurt worse than steel. My 2cents plain. Really liking your vids. Keep playing.

      I'm 54, and deal with FM too - it's awful stuff. I've had it since my latter 20's. See if your doctor can prescribe diclofenac gel. It's a topical NSAID, and you'll put it on your shoulders on down to the knuckles. It's helpful. But sometimes I still have to put ice on my wrists afterwards. It takes tons of repetition to commit lessons to memory. People who don't deal with this disease, have no clue how debilitating it truly is. Hang in there.

      Hi Toby. I found a GREAT little Mini Headphone Amplifier by Monoprice for around $11-$12 bucks on Amazon. Most run $40 or more so this was a great deal. The one I bought is with distortion, which is adjustable from nearly clean to heavy metal distortion. That way, if I don't want to use my Laney tube amp or even just my 15 watt Digitech DG15 I can, both have a headphone jack, but this just makes it easier. The batteries seem to last months.Still use headphones, but it's really convenient. The price was way more than reasonable compared to many other mini amps I've seen. You can even run pedals through it if you're so inclined.

    "You only need to know 4 chords to be able to play thousands of songs." I know 6 chords already but it takes me forever to switch between them, it would take an hour to go through an actual song lol. But, no pressure, I'm just enjoying the process.
    Re: classical vs acoustic, I got a classical just because I like the sound more but it turns out the wider neck is perfectly comfortable for my long thin fingers, so it's a win on all levels. I mmmmay want to get an electric too because this is so addictive and want to be able to do it at late hours too.

    I'm surprised no one suggested using a metronome. You can download a metronome and set it on the lowest beat that you can where you can play each note or chord cleanly. Increase the beats gradually until you're playing it at full speed.

    Great tips and information. I like the idea of not getting into specific songs, I like to show students the similarities in songs so they learn to look at the progression and not get stuck on the little details. I think the one progression was m6, M4, M1, M5 (like Em, CM, GM, and DM). I see that one is so many songs it's ridiculous and of course the old 12 bar blues will get you almost every Johnny Cash song written :)

    A lot of us older players struggle with arthritis, so I'm looking forward to your video on barre chords. I've been playing for years and have played barre chords in the past... it's just that when my arthritis is bad, I can't. So any ideas to help with that would be welcome. Thanks for doing what you do! I'm really enjoying your channel.

      James Francisco Howdy, I tried Extra Light strings and it has really helped me with Fibro pains as well as upcoming arthritis. The sound isn’t quite what it was with Light or HD Light strings, but the trade off is well worth it. I’m even considering going even lighter like 8 - 40’s or 9’s. Just to see how it sounds and feels. Keep playing.

      James Francisco... arthritis..? Take a couple naproxen before you begin playing. I also use a wrist support band on my left hand to key the pain down. There are also some stretching exercises you can do before playing. Good luck and play on.

      Robben Ford says he never uses barre chords. You can usually find workarounds - and you don't have to use all six strings every time you play a chord. Think of power chords;

      I'm 64 (there's a song there) and have started to get arthritis in my thumb joints which sometimes affects my guitar playing. I take magnesium and collagen and find it helps a lot. It's good for regenerating cartilage tissue so it's good for any joints but especially the spine and the knees. Google it and you'll find loads of info.

    Tom, thanks for the shout out and you pronounced my name perfectly. I very much agree with the zero fret suggestion. I added a bone zero fret nut to my Gretsch 5120 and it transformed it into my favorite guitar neck to play.
    Looking forward, I don’t have problems with bar chords. Can you play the Chet Atkins finger picking style - the boom chuck? If so, would you consider doing a video on that? I just can’t get the thumb to keep going and be independent from the fingers.
    Keep up the great work. I really enjoy you videos.

    Electric guitars are a LOT easier to play than acoustic. To which I'll add, it's very important to try different guitars looking for the most comfortable and playable model for you, personally. One more thing: Beginners don't seem to spend much time learning about strings, and that's unfortunate. Strings vary greatly in the amount of tension they create and in their feel and bending qualities. I always read reviews, visit company Web sites and compare string tension charts when looking for the most comfortable strings for older hands. Great series, Tom, so thank you!

    A few thoughts after my wife decided she wanted to have a proper go at learning again with me.
    Guitar buying thoughts;
    - Like how it looks. Your more likely to keep to hand and want to pick it up if you actually like it visually
    - Like how it feels. Your going to hold onto it a lot longer if it feels good tucked under your arm.
    - Like how it sounds. If it sounds like a cat being dragged down a chalkboard then who wants that?
    - Learn to keep it clean. Not only is a dusty greasy guitar harder to play it's also not good for it or your strings. There's lots of products but a microfibre cloth all over especially the strings and neck makes a world of difference.
    Loving the vibe here. I'd set up a nice cheap patreon and see if you can build a good group of people to help you get the most of out this where possible. All the best.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  5 лет назад

    One aspect for beginners is strength training. Not pumping iron, but you are building up teeny tiny muscles that you have never used much. The harder and more often you work them out the quicker you will see results. No pain no gain.
    Suck at bar chords? Work on them hard and often. You won't improve on things you avoid.
    As the hard things get easier the easy things become second nature.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  6 лет назад +2

      Great point. I have a couple exercises up that create more than a little pain I'm sure.

    • @LearnerChess
      @LearnerChess 5 лет назад +3

      Tom Strahle One has to be careful about damaging the muscles. The tiny muscles in the fingers are not like those large muscles used to "pump iron." Irreversible damage can be done if one persists after one's body, and common sense, tells one to stop.

    Hello Tom just starting out but I can only strum with three fingers. My thumb and pick are useless in my hands. My hands are stiff so this method works for me. Is that wrong.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  5 лет назад

      Not a problem. But keep trying, then if you get the thumb or pick thing down you have more options. But ultimately every guitarist has their own individual technique that works for them.
