    Let's not forget that this was the first, and still only, wooden hypercoaster. This needs to be remade by intamin.

      +SThe Teller It needs to be remade as a true traditional woody by CCI, but it's way too expensive to consider such an endeavor. RMC could take the reigns, but only so long as it is a true woody and not a hybrid. Hell, at this point, I miss it so much, I'd kill for it to return even as a hybrid, but I doubt we'll see such a thing.

    I was lucky enough to ride this with my grandpa on his 75th birthday. It was his favorite coaster after the vortex. Now my grandpa will be 83 and can no longer ride coasters because of a surgery he has had. He still loves going to Kings Island tho.

    This coaster was built when Paramount Pictures owned the park. They weren't really in the theme park industry and didn't do that good of a job running King's Island before they got out of the business and sold it to Cedar Fair. In their poor judgement they wanted a rush job on getting this thing built, not wanting to wait for a reputable firm like Cincinnati's CCI which had a couple of year waiting list before they could build it. The lumber was B-grade and didn't hold up to the stresses of those extra heavy trains needed to gain the speed to make it through the loop, which is why that support broke, causing the bump that injured a trainful of people. So, they put on lighter trains that were slower which is why the loop was removed as they couldn't make it through the loop, the structure was deteriorating to the point the coaster lost ridership, and it was horrendously expensive to maintain, therefore it was demolished. It wouldn't have been feasible with the poor quality lumber [2 1/2 million board feet!] to remodel this coaster as they did Rattler or Texas Giant. Also...the company here in Cincinnati most often uses angle-type steel framework on their largest coasters since it is rigid and not allowing warpage in the frame to cause excessive bumpiness on the tracks.
    The "powers that were" when Paramount ran the park wanted only a wooden framework as it looked more impressive than a metal framework. Heavens, they could've painted it white and it then still would've looked like wood!...like the Coney Cyclone in NY, being steel. The first season the Son of Beast WAS a GREAT ride...but after then it was murder!

      Thanks for posting this. You've provided a lot of information. Now I know why it was demolished. It was a great ride, and a great idea at the time that turned into a brilliant mistake.

    • @jawoody9745
      @jawoody9745 9 лет назад +23

      You came off this ride sore, bruised and typically with a throbbing headache. The shaking was too severe. The air time was beautiful, the loop was as smooth as silk but the rest of it just busted your body to bits. And fuck all, it DID look mighty impressive! You just can't rush an intricate design like this and use *gasp* shitty lumber, for "crying out loud...." (which was what a lot of riders did when they exited)!

    • @lightninseed
      @lightninseed 9 лет назад +21

      It was like surviving a train wreck. We always rode this toward the end of the day before leaving because after riding it, you weren't fit to ride anything else. After my first time riding it I cracked a few ribs and was in pain for weeks.

    RIP Son of Beast (2000-2012)
    Those of us coaster fanatics who had the opportunity to ride SOB are hardened in a way that no coaster fanatic ever will be again. Especially if you rode it with the loop.

    • @algorithm1193
      @algorithm1193 8 лет назад +3

      Why did they remove the loop?

    • @MattyIcecubes
      @MattyIcecubes 8 лет назад +14

      Thomas Harbauer SOB was notoriously rough, and caused a slew of injuries to riders. The removal of the loop enabled Kings Island to install lighter trains, which they believed would produce a smoother ride. It made very little difference, and an incident back in 2010 sent 29 riders to the hospital, and cost the park over $2 million in hospital bills and legal settlements for the injured riders. That was the last straw, and SOB never hosted another rider again, and the ride was demolished completely prior to the 2012 season.

    • @lisardo
      @lisardo 8 лет назад +9

      +Chef Danger That's so sad. I rode it many years back when it was still pretty new, with the loop. It was a bit rough but I never thought it was that bad. Guess it worse later on. :( Too bad, it was an amazing ride, and one amazing structure!!

    The Son of Beast is what happens when you try to built a state-of-the-art coaster using second-rate designers, contractors, and materials. I'm glad Cedar Fair bought out the part a few years back and brought us great coasters like Diamondback and Banshee. I always thought the Son of Beast was the rollercoaster equivalent of the "spiciest wings challenge". It's something you ride not for entertainment, but to say you have done it before.

    Seriously, after riding it twice in it's first year, it hurt. I had bruises and banged up knees but it didn't stop me from riding it two more times. This massive coaster was awesome, but it really did bang people up too much. Removing the loop was the least of it's problems. The loop was the smoothest section of all. It just banged left and right too much and left you with pains for the rest of the day. Too bad. It was an awesome design, apparently built with sub-standard parts. Read Brad, (below) for the full story.

      @Coop-su5zt 2 года назад

      It wasn’t an awesome design though. The track was awful because of cheaper and ineffective materials and also it gave no forces. The ride had many dull parts and an awful pacing. I guess the bad pacing is a good thing because the slow parts don’t try to beat you up

  • @lightninseed

    MY FAVORITE COASTER OF ALL TIME. ever since I was a little girl, I had ALWAYS wanted kings island to build a looping coaster. It was a life - long dream of mine and still is. I will never NEVER EVER 4GET the feeling I had whenever I went down that hill and around that AWESOME loop. Every time I watch this video, see the coaster slow down, go down that Hill and around the loop, I STILL feel that feeling; the kind of feeling you get when a dream comes true. It's indescribable and there r no words 2 express it. It certainly lived up 2 it's name. It surely was a BEAST. Yes, it was rough, but it was SOOOOOOO worth it. I'll also never NEVER EVER 4get the feelings I got when I heard that they were going to demolish it. It broke, shattered my heart n2 a gazillion pieces. A dream that got demolished BUT... at least I can say 2 this very day that a life-long dream came true and I was surely blessed 2 have been able 2 experience it. SON OF BEAST LIVES ON, A LEGEND N ITS OWN RIGHT, OF WHAT WILL ALWAYS HOLD A VERY SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART

    I remember this ride well. It was actually my first looping coaster! While super fun to ride, it beat the living crap out of you and showed no mercy. Nowadays with better technology KI could probably pull it off better, or had given it the Iron Rattler treatment, but I'm still sad to see it gone. Though I do understand why it's gone, so mixed feelings.

    • @TrunksXV
      @TrunksXV 10 лет назад +1

      Technology has nothing to do with it. The Beast, and Racer, and Vortex were built without the use of Computers for the most part. They were built with blueprints and schematics and good old hard work and engineering skills. Sure we have better tools because we've developed materials and replacement capacity but, the son of Beast was designed when Windows 95 AND 98 were on the market. You can make a bad product with 2014 Operating Systems all the same. Why the couldn't do the same thing to make an even better Ride then the Original Beast using computers to help correct those issues, would've been great. But it had too much wood, it was overbuilt and they cared more about records and eclipsing the past reputation of the Legendary Beast Ride than looking at the design of the orgininal and making something in the same vain just not totally augement the Park's skyline with by making the coast compete with the Eiffel Tower. It really made the whole skyline look bad with all that wood. If you start competing with the effiel tower in that regard, its just not going to complement the rest of the park in terms of a unifying experience.

    It wasn't the loop that was the problem, it was the whole coaster being rushed and made of shoddy wood. Hell, the loop was the safest part of the coaster, it was smooth. This could've been a classic and phenomenal coaster like it's parent. I love coasters and I am an avid rider. The last time I rode this was back in 2004 and it was a very scary experience. I knew there was something wrong with it that day. It shook violently the whole ride. Maybe it was having a bad day or the train I was in was having a bad day. I never rode it again. RIP Son OF Beast....you will be missed.

    After watching this video, I can see why they had so many complaints about injuries and stuff, it looks and sounded like a really rough ride, and as I was watching the the part of the video where you could hear the rider's reaction, most sounded lie they were enjoying it, yet I could hear some of the passengers saying, OUCH! or OWE! and I believe I even heard someone say, that hurt... so yes, I can see that there were a lot of complaints of people getting injured...I don't think any coaster could EVER take the place of the Beast though, It's been running since 1979, and It is the BEST coaster at kings island...A coaster doesn't have to have a loop or loops to be a good coaster...Coasters like the Beast are a GEM :)

She did not report the incident to Kings Island officials prior to June 16. She claimed to have suffered from a burst blood vessel in her brain, after riding Son of Beast, that required admission to an intensive care unit. "The first we heard of this was on June 16. IMHO, tunnels are cheap props. It's what's used when they want to extend track length [ride time] but run out of creative ideas what to put in the track.

    • @RutabegaNG
      @RutabegaNG 10 лет назад

      The tunnels are integral to The Beast, the longest wooden roller coaster-third longest roller coaster overall-since 1979. They make perfect sense for the ride, and they would have made perfect sense for Son of Beast, just as it did for the Beastie (kiddie version - repurposed Scooby Doo roller coaster).

      Not-Homesick NG
      Maybe you're right, but you're likely looking at all this only from a nostalgic perspective rather than one that has the want of the majority of riders at the forefront. Coaster enthusiasts [and general riders alike] desire new stuff all the time, not necessarily copies of copies, or the Jr copy of a Sr layout, or the same old "Okay time to bore me for 10 seconds" kind of routine.
      Remember, roller coasters are a form of entertainment. Your best roller coasters are those that you can ride multiple times and still never quite get completely used to certain twists, jerks, and other anomalies about them - so there's essentially like a surprise with every revisit. However, who couldn't predict a freakin' tunnel ahead?

    Son of Beast is one of those roller coaster that seemed like a good idea on paper, but not in reality. I only rode it 2 times. I first rode this in 2002, and it was ungodly rough, I rode it again in 2004 at night, and it felt like it got even rougher. Never got a chance to ride it after the loop was removed. the fake and false complaints that led to the removal of the loop and eventually the demolition of this great ride is indicative of what's wrong with America. while there was a particular spot on the ride at the top of the second hill that had a bad spot of track that jerked riders laterally, it was successfully fixed after the second year. The loop NEVER EVER EVER had any problems or issues. In fact the son of beast loop was literally THEE smoothest inversion on any coaster in the world. The track leading up to the loop made a smooth transition into the loop, and the exit portion was fine as well. I was so disgusted with the PR move to remove the loop that I never rode it after they removed it out of protest. The fact that removing the loop didn't do anything to stop coaster hating liberals from having it completely demolished two years later proves that the loop had nothing to do with the false complaints. All this was was the handy work of a busy body complainer that thinks she is saving the world by destroying everything for everyone. Either that or it was somebody out to make so much money that KI decided that it would cost less to simply demolish it.
    But as someone that has ridden son of beast at least 20 times from multiple locations, I can tell you with 100% certainty that there NOTHING wrong with the ride that would constitute tearing the while thing down.

    It almost sounds like a jet whizzing past you. Those banks were insane. I think it was just a liability thing. There was more than one time that somebody got hurt on here. From what I remember reading there was a part of the track that weakened because of the heavier train causing the track to get compromised and caused a nasty jolt on one of the rides injuring several. The reason they took the loop out was because of the weight of the train was too heavy and needed to be able to safely go through. They then went to a lighter train for a few years, but somebody else claimed they were injured on there as well, ending to the close and then the eventual demise of the ride. It really looked magnificent. This is one of those things that just may have been too big to be a wooden coaster, but it was still the eight wonder of the world (in my opinion).

    This coaster is probably the most infamous roller coaster ever built. The Son of Beast was rushed to completion after Kings Island fired the Roller Coaster Corporation of America or RCCA during the construction. The B-Grade wood wasn't meant to handle the stress from the trains. And then Kings Island tried to file a lawsuit against the RCCA, and later their insurance company after the RCCA went bankrupt.
    The Son of Beast was still running during it all. When Cedar Fair bought the park, a train stopped abruptly on Son of Beast as the riders were rushed to the hospital for non-critical injuries. There were complaints about how bumpy it was, Cedar Fair suggested lighter trains...only it didn't complete the loop, leading to its removal. Then came the mass amount of problems for Son of Beast, leading it to close permanently. But at Kings Island, Outpost 5, the Son of Beast's station was used as a haunted house attraction. The Banshee inverted coaster took the ride's place and there's a tribute to Son of Beast, an eternal flame to commemorate the coaster.
    But my question regarding the decision to rush the coaster to completion and fire the manufacturer during the construction: WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
