I just realized Reilly saved Ellie’s life. Ellie was ready to give up but Reilly said “we just keep going”. Ellie will never give up; that’s what she learned from Reilly.
It's episodes like Riley's, and Bill and Frank's where I'm glad we don't see the end. We're left with a bittersweet moment and the show trusts us enough to put together the pieces and not be more interested in shock value.
Storm Reid actually just came to my university last week for a talk! she was one of the most genuinely kind/humble/good people ive ever met :) she said she’s very intentional about the roles she chooses and riley was one of her favorites because she got to tell the story of a queer woman of color. someone also asked her what it was like working with bella ramsey, and she said she has a heart of gold and is extremely talented
Unfortunately we can piece together what happened to Riley already. Ellie told Joel that it wasn't her first time to shoot someone (after the incident in Kansas City where she had to shoot the man attacking Joel). And we know she hadn't held a gun before the one Riley showed her... This implies she had to use the gun on Riley as Riley started to turn first, sadly.
@@PinkPopcast Also in the first episode when she and Marlene talk, they refer to Riley in the past tense. That, coupled with Ellie lying to Tess about being alone in the mall, makes it pretty clear Riley didn't make it.
@@Bookworm8793 as well, that’s the same outfit that Ellie was wearing when we first meet her, and she only had the second pun book with her, not the first which she left in her room
The mall scene made my Sapphic heart so happy until... well. When Riley says she's picturing Ellie in the lingerie, I was like, "Girl, your signals are not subtle." I'm glad we didn't have to watch Ellie kill Riley. Seeing her kill Riley would just be a repeat of Sam and Henry, and I don't want to watch that again. Joel taking Ellie's hand at the end was beautiful. He finally realized he didn't need to fight his parental feelings for her anymore, and he that they would fight for each other like family.
@Evija3000 I don't want to give spoilers, but I think the previous episodes made it very clear what happened. Ellie told Marlene that she was exploring the mall alone in episode 1. Ellie cried and told Joel she had hurt someone else before, too in, I think episode 4.
Now do you see what I meant when I commented that EVERY episode is “the sad episode”? 😂 This show keeps breaking us again and again and yet we keep coming back for more! We are all masochists over here.
My belief: 1. Marlene knew Riley was Ellie's friend and was a bad influence 2. Marlene targeted Riley specifically for recruitment (she just came out of nowhere) 3. (possible) Marlene stationed Riley at the mall which was believed to be overrun with infected (effectively killing her?) 4. If three is true, Marlene then reassigned Riley to Atlanta to get her far away from Ellie Either way, I believe Marlene manipulated all these events to protect Ellie and it would have worked if (as Marlene said in Ep 1) Ellie would have stayed in FEDRA where she was safe.
Especially because in this version of the apocalypse, the world as we know it ended in 2003. Nationwide gay marriage in the US was still over a decade away and only one state had legalized it by outbreak day. We don’t know what FEDRA’s attitudes toward queer rights are but I don’t have high hopes.
riz manuel miranda over here😄 it was at this point in the show that i realized that our collective tears must be making the creators stronger. greater episode, mega ouch for the feels
I loved the “Take On Me” concert given by Benji & Rizzo 😂 I’m surprised you guys didn’t recognize storm Reid from Euphoria like everyone else. It’s refreshing tho cause she’s in so many more amazing films. Still, I love you guys !
I spend most of this show convincing myself "and they were fine, and it's all fine and they lived a gay happy ever after, and no one got hurt, and this is totally not gonna go wrong" meanwhile the most horrific shit is going down and I'm out here with a pounding headache, slowly turning to dust, dehydrating from crying so much. I need to start stocking up on electrolytes
Loved this episode. We really got to see Ellie's backstory here, and how she's terrified of constantly losing people (her biggest fear as she told Sam in Ep 5 is ending up alone). She lost Riley, and now she's refusing to lose anyone else. Loved the references to previous episodes as well: -In Ep 3, when Joel and Ellie go to Cumberland Farms to grab Joel's stash, she sees the Mortal Combat game and says, "I had a friend who knew everything about this game."-we see them play it in the arcade here. -Ellie takes a swig of Joel's drink in Ep 6 and says "Yup, still gross.”-we see her try it for the first time with Riley. -In Ep 4, after Joel says he's sorry she had to hurt someone else and how hard it is for anyone's first time, Ellie cries a little and replies, "It wasn't my first time.", I think this means we can infer that Ellie ended up needing to kill Riley after she turned, which is so sad. Ellie and Joel hardly have any dialogue, but their expressions say so much. When Joel wrapped his fingers around hers to hold her hand, I cried. Their bond has become so strong and it is so sweet.
I’m so glad they included this into the show! The whole “left behind” was actually only dlc to the first game so it’s good they gave Ellie’s backstory more in the show. Another great reaction to watch! Yeah I was also feeling dread the entire episode (even tho I know what happens in the game, they change stuff so I wasn’t sure what they were gonna keep) too. Thanks for watching this show even if it’s painful haha
maybe it's just cause this series is pretty dark or maybe it's because of other personal circumstances but you guys have seemed a bit more down recently. no matter what it is, i hope you are doing ok and that you don't burn yourselves out. it's ok to take breaks and stuff. all my love xx
I noticed that too But like you said the show is pretty dark and it's pretty hard to joke around while watching this show like they normally do with other reactions
I've come to really look forward to your guys' reactions to this show! Rizzo and I cry at all the same parts lol This was the only part of the show that I hadn't seen the game version first of since it was a dlc. Still loved both versions!
the reason Marlene didn't allow Ellie to go to Atlanta was because it's already been hinted at from episode 1 that she knows Ellie is special. she says herself that she put Ellie in the Fedra military school when she was a baby to keep her safe, so she wouldn't risk her getting killed by sending her away to some other place.
The timelines don't align. Marlene would only have known that Ellie was special after Ellie got bit and Marlene found her at the mall. That is long after she's been in Fedra school. At that point, all we know is that Marlene knows Ellie and was probably responsible for her at some point in her early childhood. So she's only refusing her to go because she's protecting her like a guardian would protect a child in their care, not that she thinks Ellie is "special" in any way.
@@tutumaina3332 I agree. SPOILER, KIND OF. She was probably just protective of her because Ellie's mother was her friend. I don't think she could have known that Ellie would be special. If she knew that immune people existed, she might have had the tiniest curiosity how Ellie would turn out after the way she was born, but not enough certainty to actually test Ellie for immunity. If she was keeping Ellie safe from harm she was also keeping Ellie safe from ever getting bitten and finding out if she's immune. Considering how big a deal a cure is, I don't think she'd let Ellie spend like 20 years casually growing up if she had any level of certainty she could be immune. That time could be used studying her and researching a cure. I mean, it is possible she just wanted to protect Ellie from crazy doctors, but I think the other way is much more likely. Or maybe she weighed her tiny suspicion of Ellie possibly being special against her much greater responsibility of keeping the daughter of her friend safe and decided that the chance of her being immune is not big enough to break a promise and risk killing Ellie during testing.
you two should watch anne with an e i just feel like you guys would enjoy it a lot. btw i love your guys reaction to this and i can't wait for you to react to episode 8 the story just gets better and better
They filmed the mall in this episode at my neighborhood mall in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The mall was already being demolished so they used stores that were already mostly broken down.
I hadn’t planned on watching this show, but I ended up binge watching just to watch your reactions! This show has destroyed me emotionally. I feel like I’m on the verge of a panic attack every episode 😅
I do love the DLC and this was a cool way to incorporate it. I'm going back to work after a week off recovering from surgery. Thank you for being there!!
I know I'm late here, but just want to point out that the initial mall lights lighting up scene has the lesbian flag colors and the arcade has the bi flag colors. Nice cinematography detail.
This part came out as a DLC a while after the first game- "The Last of Us: Left Behind" and it's another episode where queer representation is woven into the full plot, instead of next to it, or only implied as it was in the game. After Bill and Frank, I knew they would make an canon-true episode of Ellie and Riley too, but still the happiness (right before the sadness) that I felt from watching this was all but euphoric. It's so fucking cool how well they succeeded with this, and how honestly they respected the game! I'm extatic that non-gamers get to partake in this universe!
Lol great reaction, I related a lot to how you guys were tense and I couldn’t help but to giggle at your reactions to Ellie stitching Joel even though I relate😂 Fun fact, this episode is based off of the DLC of the game called “Left behind” where you play as Ellie, I’m so glad they added it in for the show. Also I wanted to point out in the game just after Joel gets hurt, there was a time skip and you start playing as Ellie, I remember players freaking out wondering if Joel died, kinda like the previous episode cliffhanger made people freak out and wonder. Anyway I really loved what they did with this episode because I remember nearly crying from watching these kids breakdown and their lives fall apart when they nearly had a chance to be happy together, they keep doing this story justice😭
