Selling a fake overpriced 'masculinity shortcut' to guys who are likely going through problems in life is so exploitative and dishonest. While masculinity is important, it requires a lot of discipline to achieve. Therefore, because people are different, it shouldn't 100% dictate what defines men as men (at least in my opinion). Jack dug his own grave by defining himself as something he wasn't.

    • @IchNachtLiebe
      @IchNachtLiebe 2 года назад +28

I agree with that. Although there are generalities that can be applied to what a man should be (strong, capable, willing to analyze a situation before acting) those generalities can manifest in a lot of different ways.
Some people work out, some people seek financial status, some people sacrifice everything they have to help others. For example, if a man jumped on a grenade to save a school of children he'd likely spend the rest of his life physically weak living off a disability check but that one moment defined and embodied his manhood.
I think that true compassion and strength is built off of what we're willing to risk losing to help others. I don't think it makes you a man just to work out but if you work out specifically to make yourself more capable of protecting those around you it is a manly action.

I learned masculinity the hard way. My mother was single until I was 7, then my step dad was a hyper masculine abusive Christian fundamentalist. So I moved in with my grandma at age 13. My friends were goths, emos, punks, metal heads, and street kids. I learned to reject authority, cover up for other people's crimes, and drown my feelings with drugs and alcohol. But then I ended up homeless, and eventually in jail. I had to fend for myself. I had to toughen up or get bullied. So I toughened up. But I still didn't know how to be a man, because I didn't understand personal responsibility. Until I wanted to get off the drugs. It soon became clear that I either grow up, or stay stuck in addiction. I chose to grow up. I'm still learning. But I've kept a healthy relationship with the same woman for 3 years, I pay my rent and bills, I take care of my cat. I know I have a long ways to go. But being a man to me means facing your problems head on, being assertive when people try to step on you, standing up for what you stand for, and protecting those who are more vulnerable than you. But these traits could easily apply to a woman and it wouldn't take away her femininity. So what makes me distinctly masculine is my personality traits. What makes me a man is what makes anyone a responsible adult. I hope that makes sense.

Masculinity isn't something you have to meditate over. Being a "real man" shouldn't be so hard for people. Stoicism, discipline, honor, integrity, that's not accessible for a few hundred dollars. Like all intangibles, it's from within. Being at peace with yourself and owning up to your past is what you need to do to be a real person. Not man or woman, just a healthy human being.
Good male role models are a lost art. Don't try to make it a commodity.

I think video games are fine as long as they don't eat into time for other things. As an old man, I get why my dad was so against games when I was young.
Playing video games is fine as long as you still make time to exercise, cook healthy meals, and find extra sources of income.
I wasted a lot of time playing games in college and "didn't have time" for things like working out or picking up an extra shift at work. I still play about two hours a week, but I spend more time working out and researching crypto and ETFs to invest in. My new hobbies are also good sources of exercise (competitive shooting, hiking, and snowboarding). I always had time for these things, but games got in the way. That was my fault, not the fault of the games though.

If you watch the episode of "You Are Here" that he was on, he actually DID answer the question politely the first time - I don't remember exactly what he said, but it was along the lines of "yeah, I wrote that, but I'm 180 degrees away from that now". But his "claim" that he warned Sydney? If he did, I didn't catch that, either. It was too subtle. When someone else asked the same thing later on, he SHOULD have said "Asked and answered" or "I already answered that" or something equivalent. It was his HUGE overreaction that started this whole thing. Everybody watching basically just thought "What the hell just happened???" and then felt the need to find out!

There are several different men out there I consider examples of what it means to be a good man. They differ greatly in their hobbies and beliefs, but what they all have in common is honesty, strong principles, and the wisdom to know when and when not to show vulnerability. By not clinging to some sort of superficial aesthetic of what a "big manly man" is, you actually become a lot harder to tear down.

This video really hit a surprisingly deep and impactful point. This will be a long comment so totally get if you don't read it, it's more cathartic for me. The start of this video is standard Jack Drama commentary. I've everyone talk about this but you tend to have interesting takes that I enjoy from time to time. However, you hit the nail on the head with the ending with the Man-o-sphere movement doing what I describe as wishing to be a robot. I'm dyslexic and consistent productivity is a struggle for me. I can work it large spirts but the day to day is crippling to me, explains a bit why I was so terrible in school and college. I wished so much to be a robot, waking up early, immediately being productive, and working hard until the end of the day. Where from working so hard I'd be satisfied and pass out just to do it again. I blamed a lack of will power, I was too weak. So I thought like working out I just needed to strengthen this mental muscle until I was a literal machine. I joined the Marine Corp for many reasons but one of them was the hope they would turn me into a productive successful robot. I was the closest to my robot ideal right after boot camp. I still do believe boys should push past their limits finding what they can achieve when they put everything into bettering yourself. You will never know you Limits until you push past them again and again. However there is a fundamental downside to all this hyper productive hyper masculine taking the world on your shoulders mentality. You are painfully fragile, like a diamond you feel strong and invulnerable, but hit the right point or the right frequency and you shatter into dust. One small event in my Career in the Marine Corp shatter my trust so overwhelmingly it took me 5 years to dig myself out of the pit of despair I fell into. As a "Man" you need to find balance, hobbies give your brain relief allow you to refocus and improve, when traumatic moments hit you, you are so rigid and immovable you break, instead like a palm tree you flex and roll with the punches.

I've been there too bro, one of the biggest things I've come to terms with over the past few years is that I'm not productive in the "normal", plink away at something for 8 hours then do it again tomorrow, way.
I used to think I was just stupid/lazy for not being able to work like that, and ran myself ragged chasing after it. After working in the professional space for a while I've realised that my typical workflow is bursts of intense productivity followed by being unable to focus, but I'm still getting the same amount of work done as my co-workers who go at a steady pace through the day.
The biggest thing for me has been to just remind myself that it's okay to have prolonged unproductive time as long as I still get everything done and meet my deadlines; I earn the "slacking off" in exchange for working 4-6 hours hyper-focused and on task.
Naturally there's a fine line there between procrastination and recovery, but everyone has to work through that regardless of their personal workflow.
Keep on keepin on homie, and remember to be as kind and understanding of yourself as you are to your pals ♥

To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. I've always seen the pickup artist segment of the manosphere as a complete joke. I'm surprised we haven't had more lolcows like Murphy come out of that space yet. Make sure to maintain frame, and wash with the pheromone soap!
On a more serious note, the observation that these are all highly insecure guys is very true. In the same way that incels define themselves by their lack of masculinity, and female validation, PUAs define themselves by their self-proclaimed masculinity, and female validation. Only someone very concerned about such things would do that; an actually confident man doesn't, since he's not constantly questioning himself. Just as you described, this is something I had to learn through habit.
I can't help but remember one time when I would regularly sit near a guy who was kind of a simp. He spoke quite loudly, so I'd inevitably hear his conversations. One day he was trying to make a move on a woman talking about how he'd learned that women are attracted to confident, and assertive guys, and how and why that is. "So that's why I'm like, really, like, confident, and like, assertive, y'know? *nervous laughter*. I struggle to imagine many ways to show less self-confidence.

Almost all of them have a friend's relationship with their parents. The father relationship is described very modern and effete.
The conversation of ultimate responsibility (although i didnt have that frame until the SfO video about it) ive used to try and help them mature into strong young men.
I only see a few that use the manosphere as their representation of what a true man is. It's never a positive experience because they take the most extreme traits of the thinking without any of the nuance. They dont have the life experience to protect themselves from it.

@@TheSunderingSea While I would GENERALLY agree with you on that, I have to somewhat disagree because of two SPECIFIC things -
"Grind" is something you do in video games, and also part of the phrase "the daily grind", so if you grew up with either gaming (back in the days when grinding was real) or in a family who used the phrase, you may think in that way yourself.
I also disagree about "side hustle", as this is often used to describe a "second job" that is different in type than your first one. In SFO's case, you could describe THIS channel as his "work", and the gaming channel as his "side hustle", because he DOES get some money from streaming it, but it's not his primary means of support.
You often see women, in particular, refer to their "side hustle" when they either work "a regular job" (in whatever field) during work hours or are stay-at-home moms (which really IS a full-time job, whether modern society sees it that way or not.) Both of these groups tend to either sell something (like clothing, candles, or kitchen equipment) in their "off hours" or blog or make crafts or craft patterns to bring in extra cash. In both cases, the phrase "side hustle" is legitimate because it really IS "beside" their regular job, and isn't the primary means of income earning, but IS a supportive means to make extra money. This is especially true of "creative types" who need that outlet for their creativity anyway.

10:40 I think what a lot of these types miss is that yes, masculine figures do tend to give these things up, but only because they are fathers and no longer have as much time for their hobbies. And even then, they don't give up on all of those things. Only some.
It's way more nuanced than something being "childish". It's more about moderation. If you're a dad and skipping out on helping your kids with something to play video games, there's obviously a problem. But if you're a dad and you spend some time playing games with the kids, what's the difference between that and watching a movie with them or something like that? It's all a balancing act. There are definitely men out there who go overboard with their hobbies, but quitting those hobbies entirely isn't the answer. The answer is moderation.

    --C. S. Lewis
The reason why comments like the tweet referenced in the video don't bother me either? Because this quote represents one of my philosophies.
