I tried to clear my counters, I put my knife block under the sink. I was putting away a knife and it slipped out of my hand and almost hit my foot. For my safety I put the knife block back on the counter. I also put my mixer back on the counter, it was too heavy to lift when I needed to use it. You're so correct, your home has to work in the best way for you and your family!
I love the idea of being surrounded by things I CHOOSE to keep in my home, and decluttering is just one of the processes I use to achieve that. Thanks for pointing out that the end goal (how much you keep, where you keep it, etc.) is going to look different for everybody because it’s fundamentally about function rather than an aesthetic. If it looks cute when I’m done, that will be a bonus, but right now I just want to find my crap when I need it. 😅
I am definitely a visual organizer. In my kitchen, I have five things on my counter... an artificial succulent plant, paper towel holder, silverware holder, and a utensil holder. I use lots of clear storage. I use an organizer for clothes.... half the bins are rope and half are clear acrylic... It works great for me. I take out way more than I bring in. I am working on being intentional about what I bring in.
One of the things I love about your videos is that you always mention that decluttering is not one size fits all. I’m extremely turned off by others who are a bit judgmental when it comes to decluttering. You are such a breath of fresh air ❤
Great video! It's great that folks are aware of how others operate in their home. Peaceful vs. My way or the highway. Especially love the toothbrush/toothpaste in the kitchen. I have my electric toothbrush on the windowsill. The sink is a bit higher so its easier on my back when I rinse. Also makes sure your sink is dish free! 😊
I've never watched a decluttering video that makes so much sense!!! "Do what works for you" I've always brushed my teeth in the kitchen.. Just suits my life better. So glad I found your channel. Thank you for sharing and keeping it real!! ❤ 🇬🇧 xxx
Wow. Just found you today. You used the word "comfort" a couple of times. That's what I have been calling it--comfortism. We are comfortizing our lives. It's not minimalism, not maximalism, but comfortism. Not decluttering, not cluttering, but comfortizing our spaces. :)
One time, I emptied the utensil crock into the top drawer beside the stove and I saw the panicked look on my partner's face so I put it all back. He probably could have adjusted to the change but the drawer would always become messy and he'd leave it open and get spills in it so we're likely both better off with that extra bit of clutter on the counter. I doubt I'll ever stop decluttering though... it was the best thing I ever did to make cleaning and doing home improvement projects so much easier.
Oh yes! For sure on decluttering - I feel that decluttering can look different for everyone and there isn't a magical amount of stuff to have or even way to do it. I'm aiming for much less! Thanks Jenny 😊
I totally agree with you! I have very few cabinets and drawers, so I have to use my countertops for additional storage zones. I have purchased nice vinyl baskets that store various things we use on a daily or weekly basis. Plus, I keep our small toaster oven, coffee maker, utensils, and some frequently used spices on the counters. This is what works for us, and it looks fine.
I am a medieval re-enactor who does heavy fighting, and a CW re-enactor who goes in the field, so I have things like a pell in my living room, muskets, bayonets and pistols in my closet, along with a tent and tent poles, and stakes, and wool display blankets, lanterns, a wooden bowl, carpet bags, black powder, and bags of empty cartridges, along with a selection of modern clothing.
I really appreciate your approach to an organised home. I'm going to adopt your approach. It's so good. I get uptight and anxious when I think of decluttering . But organising my home according to the purpose of each space sounds so doable. Thank you. I need to relax find my Joy and live simply and in harmony. Thanks so much.
Absolutely brilliant advice! Thank you! I have items that aren’t in the house yet because they don’t have a home! We moved in almost 3 years ago. It’s all safe and secure in the garage. I have always said ‘Don’t put it down, put it away!’! I wish I’d a pence for every time I said that when our kids were younger! 😂
00:38 🔄 Traditional decluttering involves getting rid of items, but focus on intentional decision-making, organization, and prioritization is crucial. 01:34 🤔 Decluttering should align with individual needs; there are no universal rules. Customize your space for functionality. 03:32 🌟 Decluttering involves making accessible and useful items you want to keep. Organize spaces based on how you use them regularly. 04:00 🌈 Surround yourself with items that spark joy, contributing to well-being. It's more than just decluttering; it's about creating a happy life. 04:26 💸 Mindful consumption is crucial for a functional and organized home. Consider the value of items before bringing them in to avoid future clutter. 05:27 🎨 Decluttering isn't about conforming to a specific aesthetic or lifestyle. Tailor your space to your preferences, needs, and comfort. 06:02 📝 Homework: Identify three most-used rooms, list activities in each, and customize spaces accordingly for functionality and decluttering.
Well you grabbed my attention when you talked about thinking carefully about what bring into your home and showed the resale shop dishes....my weakness!!! I have nice dishes but love all the patterns at the shops!
@@tarynmaria_ Thank you for confirming that decluttering and minimizing does not mean we all have to have only 2 towels, but adjust to our family and lifestyle. A breath of fresh air to those of us decluttering!
Wow what a sensible vid! Having recently downsized, I made use of the best tips I've picked up. Then I added a dollop of common sense & altho our new home isn't perfect, it's certainly working well for us 😂 PTL!
Your ideas are great and well-intended; nonetheless it comes to one fact (around 7:55) that if you need to put something you use in a specific room...and that you need space for it; you need to...? Declutter! ;) Too much is not useful...annoying stuff is in the way of a peaceful-mind-free life! What do you think? You are completely right about being well-aware of the utility of a room...to be able have what you need in it. All comes to ....being sensible, sustainable and....bringing home only...what we really need (and love!) Would you agree? Thank you so much for this eye-opener on another face of decluttering!! helene :)
Hi Helene, yes, I totally agree! Maybe I wasn’t super clear in this video, but definitely if you can’t fit your items for your functional lifestyle in your home that you should declutter to make it work 😊
Yeah, I am short and old. I don’t do the vertical space thing, the keep the kitchen counters clear thing, nothing’s in the attic, the higher the shelf the lighter the weight has to be.
Same, so when we built a house a couple of years ago, we didn’t put in upper cabinets at all. And sliding shelves or lazy susans in lower cabinets. Everything is very accessible, making cooking and cleanup both easier.
I skip most of the tslk about decluttering. A fire in 2018 took everything i owned and zi haven't even replaced it all. There is vwry little in my apartment to get rid of.
You almost gave me a heart attack, ha! There is sound, I just checked :) It might be your computer? Or there's a mute button on the video, which might be turned on!
I gotta be honest. I can't stand the term decluttering. It's too soft of a word. It has the connotation that all you're doing is putting stuff away instead of actually removing it. I personally just call it clearing up. REMOVAL. not DECLUTTERING!
That is a very good point! For years, I was “decluttering” my home, but I was simply moving things around and stuffing things into my attic! I’m not doing that anymore, but in my eyes, that was what decluttering was!
@tarynmaria_ if we can make the word stronger, people will be more apt to actually act on cleaning up to their liking. Doesn't ever have to be perfect, it just has to work for you.
I'm not a bad person, but I just can't watch it with your haircut two different lengths. I live in San Francisco and am used to a lot of different styles... but your hair seriously bothers me. You seem sane in every other way. I will check back with you to see if you change it. 😊

1:31 “works for your space” is actually Dawn K White’s container concept, only keep what you have room for where you use it or look for it first.
I love her container concepts ideas.
