the vocal range is a continuum. We habitually use one place more than others and call that a "speaking voice". In actuality each person's true voice lies everywhere within the range. Ariana is a skilled vocalist and apparently aware of this truth.

No It's not like that. She has always been doing that. This is for her vocal health rest. She's done wicked movie so her vocal need rest. Just after finishing the wicked she recorded her 7th studio album "eternal sunshine" so it’s her way of resting the vocal chord so It Won't be that much strained.

The key word is PLACEMENT. This has absolutely nothing to do with pitch. Ariana is a world class singer who has clearly received, and more importantly bought into, top notch coaching. She knows that a quality speaking or singing voice needs to resonate with placement in the FACE, aka "the mask". That's how sharp clarity - aka "buzz" or "ping"- in the voice is achieved. However, If you resonate with placement in the lower throat, your voice will sound husky and will not resonate or project. She is clearly aware of her habitual tendency to drop her speaking voice into that husky lower throat placement, and corrects on the fly. Maybe it sounds odd to the layman for her to shift from husky to youthful like that, but she is doing EXACTLY what she needs to do to preserve her instrument. Kudos to Ariana for having the awareness to self correct. Many aging rockers would still have their pipes if they did this.

Kind of like Austin Butler got tooooo into his Elvis role and started talking like elvis in interviews and changed his face. She recently came out with the white blonde hair and so on and looks kooky. I think she's going mad.
