+Kompayaa It's been sample or covered over 25 times and IMO exposed the masses to J Dilla. J Dilla, arguably one of hip hop's most influential music makers paved the way for conscious rap and r&b. There's not a modern hip hop producer whose work wasn't influenced by Dilla (he's like the James Brown of hip hop) and this song helped solidify the foundation of deep crate digging for samples. IMHO
Runnin' introduced me to J DIlla. The lyrics and the beat fit so well with each other. This kind of showed me how far some producers search to sample things, which is really great, because it allows for these sick beats to be made.
This song was actually played a lot on the radio in chicago (1995), so for that reason alone I feel like lots of people heard this song who were alive back then. But nobody really realized the importance of producers back then (IMO) I feel like pharcyde took all the credit for the beat (not intentionally, just by default because most hiphop fans didnt recognize the importance of producers). Later on, with slum village, there was internet articles describing Jay Dee as "the producer everyone's heard but that nobody actually knows about." So, many people went on living without really knowing about Jay Dee, until the 2000s with Slum Village (and even this, Jay Dee started to become a little famous only until the second album). And in between all this, Dilla didn't get the recognition for most of his stuff like tribe called quest beats he did, etc. I agree though, I was 10 years old when Runnin came out, and I fell in love w this beat, man (especially the saxaphone part).
But but how tf is he soo accurate with all his remakes like bruh said 3 quarters of a semitone and smiled cuz he know no other producer can find that shit💀💀
Hey Sandurz, To answer your question of where the bassline came from and to help educate other music enthusiasts and producers :), It came from the guitar sample. He used time stretch in his mpc to time stretch the 2nd bars bassline of the main 2 bar guitar loop (aka he time stretched one bar to fit into two bars) He then put a low pass filter on it to cut out the guitar and extract the bass. So whenever you hear that bass come in, it's from that main guitar riff sample. It''s just filtered/ mixed/ and edited in such a way that it sounds foreign to think that it could have came from that same sample. And that my friends is the genius of Dilla
I just love how the drums on their own sound all over the place up to the point that one might call it "wrong" and when the sample and bass come in.... it's just perfect. I still cannot fathom the skills and brainpower that dilla had.
this is one of my all time fav beats. If I didn't knew it was a breakdown of the beat, this is exactly how I remember the track. maybe a little longer decay and sustain on the bassline
outkast doesn't use very much sampling. A few tracks off atliens are sample based but a lot of their stuff is all instrumentation over programmed drums
Man, the fact that all of us beat heads are like dying to figure out that bassline sample, is all you need to know about the greatness of Jay Dee. Was just listening to the Pharcyde record, that bass sample on the 3rd verse sounds like he's heavily side chaining (as it sounds like the bass is dipping up and down like a roller coaster). My only theory is that Dilla played that bass part live on his Moog, side chained that with the kick, etc.
Dilla might be the best hip hop producer of all time. He was so talented... as evidenced by you being unable to find the other bassline. You did a good job recreating the beat tho.
I have summed up my 2 best beats of all time to be: 1. Can't Keep Running Away (J Dilla w Pharcyde) 2. Latin Lingo (DJ Muggs w Cypress Hill) J Dilla & DJ Muggs to me are some of the best producers of all time! I'd love to see a breakdown of "Latin Lingo baby, funky bilingual!" Thanks for this. This was great!
Broooo I literally just started bumping Runnin and a ton of Pharcyde songs ALL DAY today. What are the chances, this is too perfect. #illuminaticonfirmed #sandurz #theconnection
yoo sandurz Dilla always used the Moog analog synths for bass lines also.. I think he had one special made for him.. check out the crate diggers with Dilla video... they show a Moog or some type of keyboard he use to use... that's my guess.. keep up the good work.... Damogreen.. peace good friday
+Damien Rogers oh definitely! his Moog basses were always the sickest! this was back when he sampled all his basslines before he busted out the synths. Preciate it!
I have no idea how to make beats, but Sandurz so desperately wanting to find that bass makes me want to figure it out. He should reach out to the makers they would probably be happy to clue him in.
I would be very much grateful if you could document the tracks used in the description list. thanks a lot in advance. It's really nice to discover the integral original samples :)
Addressing the Bass line issue, I read this on Stone Throw's website - Fat Lip and I fought physically over the way Jay Dee originally programmed "Runnin'." Fat Lip went in and reprogrammed every straight beat because Fat Lip was all about having the beats a certain way. I fought for it to be the way that it was because I was a stickler about people's creative input - that's what we hired him for. If I didn't stop that and physically fight this guy for it, "Runnin'" would have been a different song all together on a spiritual level. So maybe that bass line is not even from the same record, since Fat lip possibly changed and or added elements.
dilla did this with half the technology
smh that man wasnt human lol
You think this is crazy listen to Don't Cry. He chopped up that beat by ear he legit was not from this planet lol
Foreal
Shawn Wavy man i agree! !!!
Shawn Wavy The Greatest Ever!!!
That's probably the best sample flip of all time
This beat changed hip hop

I’d say tribe called quest (or q-tip) changed hip hop
But but how tf is he soo accurate with all his remakes like bruh said 3 quarters of a semitone and smiled cuz he know no other producer can find that shit💀💀
J Dilla made things sound so good and fluid with so much complexity. One of the best to ever do it.
agreed
Hey Sandurz,
To answer your question of where the bassline came from and to help educate other music enthusiasts and producers :),

@Typ Typ 3000 came out in 1994 so it could be mpc60 or sp1200
I wonder what was the bass line sample when a rapper says "It's 1995..." in a middle of the song.
I helped him find it!
@Typ Typ probably on the 2000 XL?
@Typ Typ He may just have tuned it down
I just love how the drums on their own sound all over the place up to the point that one might call it "wrong" and when the sample and bass come in.... it's just perfect.

SANDURZ... WHERE U BEEN DUDE? U FELL OFF THE MAP!!
THE Greatest beat(IMO and Favorite) of all time. Rest In Peace J Dilla.
This beat is legendary
Dilla is my GOAT producer and to give you Sandurz credit, this is one of the closest remakes of this crazy beat!
This is the real Sandurz, his evil trisexual twin gets released from the attic on Wednesdays to do beat critiques
Matt Morris L for even attempting to give me an L.
Matt Morris..... I have work in the morning
Matt Morris nah keep the L tonight and try to give it to me tomorrow
Matt Morris nah I don't have any space for it at my house, just toss it in your personal pile of L's
Matt Morris nah I rented a studio apartment last month.... Just keep the L bruh early Christmas gift
sometimes when you remake the beats for these videos they sound a little of and not right but this one sounds flawless dude
*off
JoeMckeown there's SO MANY factors it would be nearly impossible to get it exactly the same
Dilla recorded a lot of stuff live, even things he could have sampled cleanly-I wouldn't be surprised if the bass is played live.
it' s not
Absolutely LOVE this song and so glad you did a breakdown of this. Props!
one of your best man. so sick

He was so ahead of space + time itself... J Dilla, R.I.P.

dilla played the bassline himself

he got a taste of dilla then died, he could not handle it.
If u look up what happened to him there’s a reddit thread where he replies saying that he feels burnt out and wants to work on his own stuff
Jilla knew how to do samba.
The jungle noise is the "Cuica".
