Father of two 28 year old special needs twins here. My son is the most afflicted, much like your son. Have long worried about he Hell he is likely to encounter when me and my wife are gone. Enjoyed your words here tonight. A very wise person, I call her my wife, has always told me to look at it this way, “You’ll get to experience a lot of things in life others don’t get to experience. Some will be not so pleasant, but some will be gifts! You will be living a fuller life than most. Grow from it!” It’s hard at times, but a much better outlook than always going to the dark places. Live on brother….LOVE your content and that much of it includes Wesley.

I'm with you, Jim. As a 70-year-old man, who was crippled from polio at the age of 3, I think you're on the right path. Thanks to great parents, and supportive brothers & sisters, I never went down the "oh, woe is me" trail. I simply accepted the reality of my condition and made the best of it. I never said "I can't do this or I can't do that." Instead I asked myself, "CAN I do that?" Then gave it a shot. Sometimes I failed. But often I succeeded. And even when I did fail - at first - I could often find, or invent, a work-around. This allowed me to do a lot of things that other people thought that I couldn't do. Like hunting, and camping, and racing go-karts. I rode motorcycles for a few years back in my late 20's. And I even managed to earn a pilot's license in 2011. If I had listened to the nay-sayers I probably would never have tried most of the things I've done.
The point is, don't put pre-conceived limits on yourself or Wesley. And don't let anyone else do that to you, either. You never know what you're capable of until you try. That's different for each person and each situation, so just keep the lights shining bright and plow ahead.

You know Jim, most people don't have it in them to overcome "Serious" adversity, it's true..but the mindset is the most important, either negative or positive it produces what you sow. Your ability to face adversity and share the path to overcoming it is truly unique and inspiring. All of these things make you grow in oh so many ways that will not only help Wesley, Mom & Huddy but awesome canoe trips in the future, can't wait. Stay the course & keep your paddle wet !

Thank you for sharing your experiences on dealing with Wesley's disability. Thinking positive for the future equals power in the present. That's powerful. You and Tori are wonderful examples for both Wesley and Hudson. The experiences they have being out in nature on the adventures that you go on as a family are bound to have a positive effect on the boys. Maybe more so than you may imagine. So good to hear that Wesley said "Mama". That is so encouraging.

Jim, I watch a lot of travel programs with people who have chosen a different style life. Here’s why I watch you. Yes, I saw you and your brother on Alone years ago. That’s how I became familiar with your name. After that, I inadvertently came across your channel in my feed. I remember it to this day. I didn’t know you were married or that you had Wesley until that day. The three of you were traveling along a river and stopped to camp at a cabin. I didn’t know about Wesley at that time but soon became aware that he was on his own journey. Tori was sitting at the table in the cabin with a puzzle book. This is silly, but I also do those puzzle books….so, connection and subscribe. From that point on, I have followed you because of how you are as a man with Wesley. Wesley is so lucky to have you and Tori as his parents. I admire you Jim. My nephew had Angelman’s Syndrome so I understood the genetics, besides I’m an RN who works L&D. I’m so glad you got the mental help you needed to help you focus. My nephew’s parents split up, each having mental/physical problems while raising another child. I wished they would have gone for counseling. Anyway, know you are a treasure as a parent, as is Tori. You are so admired by your community on RUclips. Take care and Merry Christmas.

I've been sick for 62 years (chronic migraines and CPTSD among many other maladies) and nothing could be done about my health. I had to turn to God and begin to renew my mind to His Word. It has transformed my life. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, Romans 8:28, Ephesians 5:20, Colossians 3:15 and so many other Bible verses, comes to mind for me. Taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and remembering that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him. When you get to the point where you understand there is a blessing in the situation, you begin to heal in a powerful way. Some really good books are Power in Praise, Imagine Heaven and Imagine the God of Heaven. God bless you all.

So Jim you are a great role model for all of us other fathers who have similar problems. In any case, you guide me how to think and relate to my son who is autistic. Many thanks to you Jim.

Thanks for the insights Jim! Totally agree with your comments on thoughts and the replacement technique- it has work for me too! You can’t control what thoughts bubble up in your mind, but when you recognize them you can choose to replace them with a positive/opposite thought!

Jim- there aren't better parents for Wesley than you and Torrie. You both have made it possible for Wesley to experience all that you do; you've included him in everything, your travels and your films, and that is a powerful message. I say this as the father of adult kids who have disabled kids of their own- one who has a 7yo daughter with cerebral palsy and one with an 11yo son who is autistic. My kids have done as you- ensured that their kids get all the experiences they can, so the 7yo has played softball and soccer, rides a therapy horse and has tried to wall climb. She often uses a wheelchair, especially in crowded stores. And, kind of like you, my son has to keep in mind that as he is a high-school cross-country and track and field coach, his daughter will never be competitive and herself deals with her frustration that she cannot compete with able-bodied children. And even more mindful that his daughter is one of a set of identical twins, one of whom only lived 13 months- the twins also had a rare condition, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. So when I watch your videos, and I see Wesley on those long trips, knowing the risks that this incurs and the fact that Torrie and you have made sure you have a way to get Wesley help no matter where you are, I stand in awe. I am also thrilled to hear that Wesley is beginning to talk! How great is that! Back in Covid I began watching you- it was a reminder of when I was younger and tooling around Algonquin PP and Michigan's UP canoe rivers and I just wanted outdoor canoe videos in Canada (I grew up outside Detroit), I found you, Chris Prouse, Xander Budnick and others and never went back- thank you for you do!

Thanks for sharing those insights and your story. I have always admired the strength and positivity that both you and Tori show. I can imagine it has not been easy. I think you are both amazing parents and the boys are incredibly lucky to have you. This would be a great pep talk for anyone going through a hard time. That is so exciting that Wesley is starting to talk! It’s amazing to watch him progress as the years go on. Very inspiring!

I know exactly how you feel. I have a special needs grandson we are helping raise and I have the same fears. However in this crazy Evil world I am reassured that he is a pure gift of Love and innocence, and there are still some good people left in the world who bravely stand up against the darkness and project the human spirit of godliness......You are one of them Jim.

Thank you for this video. My daughter and our first born was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. When I saw her I just wanted to have it fixed now. They, the medical staff told us that she would be mentally challenged and would need a lot of help. She proved every one wrong and grew up to be a very special person. She went through school with high marks and graduated with honours. She went on to university and graduated with a degree in nursing. She is a RN working in home care giving back to her community. Never give up on your children, as they will surprise you and become more than you think. Wesley has been on more canoe trips than most of us will ever be on. I am so jealous. He is loved and given the opportunity to enjoy nature and family time which is so important. Your family is so important, so keep doing what you are doing. Love your family your life and your videos no matter what order in time they come.

Gratitude. You have so much to be grateful for , the challenge of a special needs child is a gift. Every small forward step is celebrated. It’s not something we have control of except our attitude. God has created us all in his image so we need to draw from that blessing and see the ways we grow closer to God through those challenges. We can do nothing without the Lord. You thank God but do you really or is it just an expression. Wesley was given to you because through Gods help you are able. I also have faced the challenges of a child that could have died with a heart condition and she thrived because I embraced her as she was able. After two open heart surgeries and a failed marriage she now has 4 children and good health and I never doubted all would be well even in my solitary closet. I praise God everyday. Prayer. May people are praying for your family.

I am sure you sharing this will help people so thank you for being so transparent. It is also said that most of what we fear or worry about never never takes place!so concentrate on the here and now, the blessings we have, and plan and hope for a prosperous adventure filled future!
