If you have an ongoing class action against you and have to call back all the notebooks you manufactured the past 4 years, then release a new notebook the same year that is part of the recall program even before it hits store shelves _and you still sell this product to this day_ you'll have to realize eventually that this will cost you a lot. So you change the product, but try to do it in a way that you never have to admit you made a mistake. I guess they just run the calculations and decided it costs more to honor the warranty and fix the machines that are under the recall program than asking a ridiculous price to fix a problem they created from those that are no longer in warranty and keep going forward. The reason they won't immediately change this in all models is probably it costs less to sell the machines already manufactured and calculate with a ~10% return rate than to destroy them in favor of a new model. And they are right, the keyboard is far from being the only reliability problem with their machines, so even a machine with a "magic keyboard" can be subject of a future recall regarding backlight problems, charging circuit or whatever comes to light.

These prolonged butterfly problems spreading to multiple models for multiple years are NOT good examples of Apple learning by their mistakes. It is a repeat of their thin iMacs overheating the motherboards and vid screens from 2005 through at least 2012 (probably longer). My 2006 BTO iMac cost me $3000, and yet mere months after my warranty expired, it had a meltdown.
Geniuses said it was probably the motherboard and would cost me $900 to replace it. The screen may have been affected also, but the could not tell until I had the motherboard replaced. If, as they figured, the screen needed replacement, that would be an additional $900! "We sure are sorry for you, but this is not a widespread problem, and we are not responsible." I am pretty sure this overheating was a ten year problem, so it WAS a widespread issue, but they would not admit it. So sad that a company with such a reputation for quality would let so many customers crash and burn with poorly designed cooling needs with no compensation.
I never did buy another iMac. They could not be trusted. I did get a 15" MacBook Pro from 2015 AFTER customer testimony proved it reliable, and still had a scissor keyboard.

Waited as it futzed and sputtered along during the last year until they finally released the 14" with M1 Pro, 1080p camera, improved ports/charging and separate function keys. Very good timing lol, and it cost a fortune but it was worth it: the cusp of a new generation and the first to finally leave behind all of Apple's post-2015 laptop errors. I'm very happy with it.

What I still find interesting is how Apple blew right past the Butterfly mechanism on the external Magic Keyboard that was released in 2015. I mean, if the Butterfly Keyboard was so amazing and the "future of keyboards", why didn't they include it for desktop users? That says to me Apple never felt confident in the reliability of it from day one. I have to believe Apple knew the keyboard was trash, but couldn't backtrack on the design as it was too late in the production stage to make those changes.

Yes, the technical problem has been solved, but even if they quit butterfly and "returned" to the scissor keys, the macbook's keyboard is not what it used to be in terms of quality.
Last year I bought 3 macbooks - 2 pros 13 m1 and one air m1. The macbook air/pro early 2015 keys were just... perfect compared to the new models, regarding the keyboard.
I don't know if you guys noticed but the black keys are becoming shinny after so little time of use.
So, even if the old macbooks were a little bit thicker I really prefer the old models when it comes to the keyboard. The plastic of the new models is of very poor quality.

It’s great you mentioned the “failed” products under jobs. He wasn’t perfect and I think that’s why people love to attack Apple fans at times as they treat jobs as some sort of god or something. Jobs chose cook to replace him and even told him “not to ask what I’d do. Just do what you think it’s best”
I remember using the “hockey puck” mouse on the G3 iMac when I was a kid and remember how “cool” it was but also remember how uncomfortable it was to use even for my then 9 year old hands.
Also anyone remember the iPhone 4 antenna issues? One of the if not the best iPhone designs had a major issue. That happened under jobs.

Apple wanted a piece of hardware that would fail after a few years. A few years as long as it was after the warranty ended. But Tim Cook mis calculated the failure rate. They were getting enormous failures during the warranty and during the extended warranty. The plan was to have Apple customers frequently buy new laptops, NOT to frequently repair laptops at Apple’s expense.
Hence, the buttery keyboard, a experiment at increasing profits, proved a failure and the design was canceled. For those old enough, this was also the strategy American car makers used to force their costumers to frequently buy new cars. Ford, GM, Chrysler, Jeep… we’re very good at designing parts to fail just months after the warranty expired. But then came Japanese imports with much better reliability and those who weren’t die hard fans of domestic manufacturers switched to imports.

The butterfly keyboard was probably at first a good intention (to make the Macs even smaller), but well it backfired as we know, same with the always thinner MacBooks (at the point where they got beaten easily by the windows competition) and the "comeback" of the old, well served MacBook Pro designs and more ports.

If anyone is reading this, I hope that we can stop talking about dust in keyboard. It was definitely more serious than dust; it was the entire make up of the dome on the switches itself. It was prone to failure, dust or not.
Please research more about why the key was failing. People are repeating what others are repeating without evidence. The keyboard failing was not due to dust like Apple and people have thought about. Dust was a minimal factor.
A user on Reddit conducted a dust experiment and found that the keyboard is pretty dust resistance due to the very minimal gap. He/she blasted with dust both on top of the keyboard and from underneath the keyboard. Remember, even when Apple inserted the membrane to cover for dust, the keyboard was still failing.
This lead to the next conclusion, it was the chemistry/material of the internal dome itself that was causing failure. The experiment that I have mentioned above showed the weak structure/material of the keyboard dome gave out after repeated use. This is what causing repeating keystroke or key failing to return.
This was later confirmed by iFixit and my college, Cal Poly. They did a material testing on the keyboard dome mechanism and found out that Apple changed it to a more resilient composite. Ever since this change, we have not heard anymore wide spread issue with the keyboard failing.
