I have a head cannon that the lone wanderer played visits to little lamplight helping them out a bit (bringing food so they didn't only eat fungus) and once MacCready had to go to Big Town the Lone Wanderer told them it was shit and pointed them in a better direction.
So basically he’s like: “oh you love me? I never thought of us being more than just friends, but if you’re already here, fine, let’s be a couple or something”. Very romantic Maccready ...not! Thankfully there are shy Dansy and Mayor Zombie-Cutie 😁

How did I have MacCready as my companion for the last QUARTER of the game and I never knew it was MATT FREAKING MERCER?! I know his voice so well now, I couldn't possibly hear anything else, but those few months ago....
They say the same thing but with different tone of execution, gives both female ss and male ss a clear distinction. Also both can have different dialogues regarding their past
