  • Purple Army, it's one of the biggest interviews we've done yet! Check it out as we break it down with Hans-Martin Buff, who worked as the main audio engineer at Paisley Park from 1996-2000, engineering such CLASSIC Prince albums as "Emancipation", "Crystal Ball", "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" and more!
    It's one of THE MOST detailed interviews you'll hear!
    In this interview, you'll find out:
    - How Buff got his start working with Prince
    - What song was supposed to be "Bohemian Rhapsody huge" in it's arrangement and mix, but didn't turn out that way
    - the NAME and SOUND of the unreleased song that Buff did with Prince on his first day
    - which songs from "Musicology" and "20TEN" actually date back to the mid 1990s!
    - The time Prince wanted to re-record his ENTIRE back catalog?!
    - The Prince remake sketch that DIDN'T make it into the Muppets Show
    - The emotional, unused vocal part that was removed from the song "Comeback"
    - which song Prince spent weeks working on and how that was unheard of for Prince
    - how Buff "went shopping" in The Vault to compile Crystal Ball with Prince
    - What happened to the 7 CD "sample set" that Prince, Buff and Morris Hayes compiled
    - which song got pulled from "Crystal Ball" because it was supposed to be on "Roadhouse Garden"
    - and MUCH, MUCH MORE!!!!

    Uncovering Prince is ESSENTIAL viewing! What a great insight into a period in Prince’s career that generally gets much less coverage. The moment for me was thinking about what Hans must experience when he listens to an album he knows so intimately, like Emancipation. It must be such a headrush! Great interviewing - you are getting really good at this guys, no fangirling, just incisive, intelligent questions that reveal Prince’s genius.

    Really interesting interview. Prince seemed to have a knack for employing intelligent, laid back engineers. There was clearly so much more he could have said but held back out of respect for Prince's privacy. To his credit but it would have been intriguing to hear it anyway! Looking forward to more Uncovering interviews!

    Thank you, The Violet Reality, this was a great interview and ranks very very high on the list. Buff seemed to be honest and respectful still of Prince’s privacy in death, he was a little guarded but still gave some nice little nuggets about the Prince. Somebody, Someday or Sex in the Summer is my pick from Emancipation. 💜✌🏼

    What a great scoop getting this guy really eye opening. He's cool and seems straight forward to the point and candid, dry sense of humour. But Buff?! You kidding me?😲 Sun Moon and Stars is my favourite. Have you heard him sing it live? 😍 It's not complete reggae but it's close. Prince knew! Thank goodness you had NO say in what was included 😂😋. This interview though reinforces my thought that the onion that is Prince did what he thought felt and wanted. We all are the sum of our experiences. Keep on uncovering Prince ~ good job guys. P.S. i like that you only have 1 microphone it helps them to complete their thoughts without interruption. You are great interviewers 👏💜

    A very informative interview. Thank you team for the perfectly placed, intelligent questions. Hans is no doubt a brilliant engineer and was obviously highly respected by Prince. It will be forever difficult to try an understand Prince's reasons for placing certain songs on his albums. All I can say is that when I listen to the Rave album, my mind, heart and soul travel the journey Prince wants me to take. The quality of the man he was, the depth of his own soul recognition and his multi-faceted artistic genius continues to astound me as I learn more from these interviews. Thank you Violet Reality and thank you Hans for your generosity of spirit.
    Peace and be wild. xxx

    1:03:30 Kevin Smith asked Prince why he didn't play these songs and others like Morning Papers, and Prince said it was because Mayte wasn't around to dance with him - quite sad.

  • @toekevin
    @toekevin 5 лет назад +10

    Good interview. I think the thing to remember is that prince lived inside his head and was generally a private man.
    He expressed himself through his work which also was his art and his craft.
    Work, art, craft: these are very different words with different subtexts attached to each. Now, think about these words in the context of high productivity. What I mean is that he was he was exercising all of these things simultaneously on a non stop work schedule. Before you know it you have literally a mountain of music. Taken as a whole, this man at any given time had a multitude of choices to make. As time went on and as his career developed he had more and more options and choices to make. He had more to choose from.
    I would go out on a limb of pure conjecture and say that after he was done with Warner brothers and put out Emancipation that he didn’t want the lead off single to be another Prince commodity. My theory is that he chose that song because it represents something that his spirit chose before he was known as the rock star “Prince”.
    It’s an homage to what came before him and laid the foundation of what he’d become, therefore releasing a cover song was a great way of reestablishing his position in the world as a new born artist. He would be them free to release original music. But I think the cover song was part of the design. He strategically places covers on each disc of Emancipation.
    Brilliant move.
    But if I’m gonna choose a different lead off single, wow, I might choose White Mansion. I think it would have done well in the R&B thing that was happening in 96’.

      Sorry about all the weird typos. Ugh

    • @toekevin
      @toekevin 5 лет назад +2

      Oh. And the most obvious reason this was the first single, it’s a beautiful love song and he says, “sometimes the words of another just seem to work out fine”.
      Go figure. Lol
      I think he was in love with Mayte, and this song. It’s most likely as simple as that.

    • @kandikane923
      @kandikane923 5 лет назад +3

    • @trevorjonathan4405
      @trevorjonathan4405 5 лет назад +1

      Very well said. Prince was playing 4D chess at all times. Each disc was made 60 minutes long to symbolise the pyramids - Prince used this as a way to further pay homage to the foundations built by black men/woman during their previous renaissance period. Genius instinct.
      Emancipation (Disc 2) is very underrated in its influence on modern music.

    I remember meeting Hans in the 90s when he worked at Paisley. The story of George eating chicken! LOL. Please estate remasters! Remember Hans being just as easy going. "She Gave Her Angels"/"U'r Still the One" would be a good release around Celebration(NC2U) and the unreleased intro "Comeback" sounds interesting.

    I loved that he asked if there were any albums they didn't like at 28:30. Yeah Prince was a rock-god, but he wasn't perfect. I have meet too many fans who refused to be critical at things that were obviously sub-par, and this usually happened when he was trying to do what Hans mentioned here, trying to be everything to everyone. Rave Unto is a perfect example. This album is at the bottom of my list save the title track and "Beautiful Strange". It sounds like it was an obvious attempt to capitalize in the Santana success with collaborations.

    Great interview! It's interesting to hear stories about different songs, and it would be great to hear the acapella vocals at the start of 'Comeback'. However, despite having some stellar songs (stuff like 'The War', 'Soul Sanctuary', 'Dreamin' About U', 'Strange But True') this is probably my least favourite Prince era. In my opinion, none of the albums from this time sit amongst the pantheon of great Prince albums, and the era represents Prince in a bit of an artistic slump (something Hans seems to agree on! I certainly agree that Prince had a fire under his arse just after this period when recording 'The Rainbow Children', which I believe to be his last truly great - released - album). Hans mentions that there is always a duality in Prince's recording - such as the 'funky' stuff he was recording alongside The Truth - and that's what I've always hoped was the case with this era, that he was also recording more experimental/strange/artistic tracks such as 'The War' and for whatever reason didn't see fit to release them. On Hans account that doesn't appear to be the case - but nonetheless there are a few treasures from this period.

    Interesting that Prince had so many introverts working at Paisley. Always tell my students that introverts brains function as complete internal circuits that don't require the outside stimulation of constant communication/ socializing mandatory for extroverts. Those who lasted at Paisley seemed comfortable with the fact Prince expected them to hold the line and focus intensely, whether in the moment, or for 24 hours straight while completing, or finessing his vision, with little connection to the outer world. There was a certain vignette in Steve Parke's book that struck a chord: Prince's sudden socializing with Paisley staff prior to a tour, inferring how hard it must have been for him to leave his private, PP, world, and insert himself back into the madding crowd of interviews, traveling from city to city, and adjusting the sound properly in different venues.
