Thank you so very much for making this post. When Colombo first started I was about 9 years old. I wasn't very interested in it at the time but for some reason I wouldn't turn it off either. And then one night gosh knows how many years later I found them on my satellite on Sundays Channel. I started watching it again at a older adult age, a lot older, and I fell in love with watching Columbus!! It's great because I can watch a whole bunch of episodes every night really late. Thank you so much again for talking about and bringing back memories of Colombo for me!! God bless you Peter Falk
It's #1 but other shows hold up well too like The Streets of San Francisco, Harry O or Barnaby Jones the latter is much like a cross between Columbo and Murder She Wrote.
I like how the show didn’t follow the typical murder mystery, where you find out near the end who the killer was, since we always saw who the killer was at the beginning, and the rest of the episode was seeing if they get caught
Jack Cassidy was such a great character in all three of his roles on this show. He played the cold and glib psychopathic killer perfectly. RIP to him & Peter Falk two greats of their era!
Here in Czech republic it's on TV virtually all the time. I grew up with it a still enjoy every episode even when I watch it for the tenth time. Impeccably written and acted. No other detective show will ever come close to it.
Pure perfection. No detective show will ever surpass Columbo for me. Will never skip watching an episode when I do a re-watch. Any Old Port, Swan Song, A Friend In Deed, Now You See Him. Among the best of the best
A stitch in time is one of my faves!!! When comumbo loses his cool it gives you chills, because he is ALWAYS so calm and collected, but when he gets so angry in that scene it's everything!! Love it🥰
Yes, that scene when he slams the paperweight / whatever it is on the desk and tells Spock that he’s gonna nail him . . it’s out of character but perfect.
@@SixStringStevebut it also works to force the doctor’s hand to remove the incriminating evidence himself so there’d be no risk of an autopsy revealing what he did. And his anger that a healer is working harder to take lives rather than save him is something I can see angering Columbo.
This one is a soft-spot for me. I remember watching Columbo with my father when it aired on TV. He was the one who got me into Columbo. I think I was about ten. By myself, I thought it was kinda boring, but my father’s explanations made it interesting. (He was also the one who taught me critical thinking, the scientific method and the Socratic Approach.) He would point out the clues and the connections to me with such energy that you’d think he was reporting a football game. I think it was a new episode for him, but I could tell he was paying attention. As I grew older, I was more receptive, more appreciative of shows like Colombo. (Especially in the face of flashy whiz-bang shows like CSI.) I don’t think I would’ve been if it wasn’t for this series and watching it with my father.
When the Covid-19 Pandemic started one thing I did was to buy the complete series on DVD so I would have something to occupy my time. The series was a good sized part of my childhood and re-watching the episodes is a real treat.
Worth mentioning Columbo's wife :) One of the characters who everyone knew but had never seen on the show. Columbo was mentioning his wife so often that for viewers she was as present in the show as any other character despite not being portrayed by any actress.
I remember watching Colombo with my dad. Peter Falk had such charisma in the show. I also liked how I parodied his detective persona in the mystery parody "Murder By Death."
Falk was also excellent in the movie, The In-Laws, with Alan Arkin. "Not getting killed is really the key to the benefits package", funny line in a very funny movie.
I have constantly been watching Columbo for at least 20 years, and it still stands as my #1 comfort show, easily. I have the full box set, and I even have the Columbo Phile book that outlines details about the entire show. Whenever it’s on tv, I drop everything to watch an episode or two and it’s just evergreen, IMO! I’m so grateful to my dad for introducing me to it and carrying on a family tradition (he used to watch it with his dad), and I am grateful to your for talking about how amazing the show, and Peter Falk really made Columbo the legendary reverse murder mystery that it is ❤️
1. That car was a beautiful work of art. 2. Peter Falk was a beautiful man. 3. The sets were always beautiful. 4. My favorite episode is the one with Leonard Nimoy 5. How no one just shot Columbo and dumped his body, I will never know. 6. Peter Falk was a genius of an actor. I wish there had been a Murder She Wrote, Columbo crossover, and Jessica was the murderer.
"Columbo" was such a great show, one of a kind!Peter Falk was an amazing talent, it can't be replicated as a series, although I have a few ideas of who could play Columbo in a feature film, but it should be left to rest in peace!Long live the legacy of "Columbo"!
Definitely one of my favorite childhood shows that I watched with my dad. It was an old show even when I was young and I'd almost forgotten about it until now.
I'm a huge fan of Falk and Columbo. I have every episode on DVD. Just before he died l wrote him a fan letter around 2005 and got a signed photo with an authorisation letterhead. I'd like to think Peter read my letter personally. RIP Mr. Falk
Wonderful show. The character of Columbo was awesome and Falk's undefinable charisma brought it to life. Not sure if you mentioned it or if I missed it but for his Columbo work Falk received ten Emmy nominations and won four of them, nine Golden Globe noms and one win, a number of other nominations and wins. He was a very talented and beloved actor. Will never forget the surprise and thrill when in 1987 he popped up in "The Princess Bride" 😂 Not embarrassed to say I have tears in my eyes remembering him.
Also my favourite detective show ever, although I prefer the earlier seasons. Used to watch episodes nightly for years once they came out on DVD. Excellent Video as always!
I was watching Columbo a lot as a kid - I watched some episodes again not long ago and I was amazed at how well it aged. Watching those is also a voyage back in time with old technology, old cars.... I always loved the secene in which he loses his temper, showing another side of the character. Thanks for this video!
I was a kid, here in Denmark, when these episodes aired. I was, and still am a huge fan of the show. Some of the episodes are still being aired now and then, on national TV, that's how popular the series was in Denmark.
Great video man! My dad introduced me to Columbo about 10 years ago and it became our thing to watch it when it aired on MeTV on Sunday nights. My dad passed away last year and I think of him whenever I watch Columbo. I also love that you said nobody else can be Columbo except Falk. I would never want to see another guy do it.
Classic detective show! The beauty of it was watching Columbo work his magic up until the closing trick on the guilty party. For me the 70s was the best era.
I own all seasons on dvd. it's always a fun watch no matter which episode you pick. showed columbo to my flatmate and he loved it immediately thanking me afterwards for having shown him such an aweome series. peter falk was a legend! I discovered him during a week where my parents left me alone at home for the first time and have loved him ever since!
I got introduced to Columbo through my gran. She used to say 'my wee man is on' when the show was coming on. I loved this show and the character of Columbo.
Your comment was next to mine.. I guess this was a show to watch with dad. Its funny because I had issues getting into some of my dads " old shows" like Andy griffin but Columbo never failed to impress.
I have anxiety issues, and as a kid I found watching traditional detective stories unpleasant. But with Colombo, the emotional stress of uncertainty was replaced by the intellectual delight of watching Columbo figure things out. Oh, and just one more thing...
Speaking of Columbo fanfiction, my personal one would have him appearing on the starship USS Voyager through an unspecified anomaly. This anomaly has an effect on other members of the crew as well. Chakotay takes on a persona of a cowboy (Robert Beltran's character in The Night of the Comet), Seven of Nine becomes a Soviet spy (Jeri Ryan's character in the Dark Skies series), and Tuvok becomes a costumed superhero with electricity-based super powers ("Black Vulcan" from the Hanna-Barbera Superfriends cartoon). Yes, the last one is ridiculous, but it's something that stuck in my mind since Star Trek: Voyager aired. So, what's Columbo's connection to Voyager? Kate Mulgrew starred in a short-lived Columbo spinoff, "Mrs. Columbo." So, yes, Janeway feels a mutual attraction to the rumpled detective. Nevertheless, there's a murder mystery on a planet that Voyager is visiting for some necessary supplies. I'm thinking some key official sympathetic to Voyager is murdered by a rival, and Voyager can't get what they need until the mystery is resolved.
That would be WONDERFUL to see or even read. Has this actually ever been made? Or is it still just in your head? If so, where is it available to watch or read? I love BOTH Columbo AND Voyager! Those are both two of my favorite shows! It'd be great if you could ever put it into production or publication. As another great Star Trek captain used to say, "Make it so!" 😁🖖😃
I remember Columbo from my childhood. I watched few episodes here and there. Peter Falk's character sure left a permanent imprint but I was too young to fully appreciate the series. Recently I began to watch old Columbo episodes from a streaming service starting straight from the beginning. And what a delight it has been! I thoroughly enjoy the cat and mouse game Columbo has with each criminal. Such a harmless looking scruffy little cop who is armed with brilliant intelligence. And always acting like a fool to put the bad guys at ease.
Most of my childhood memory growing up over seas watching shows from the 80s or 70s during the 90s as they were new to us over there, and columbo was on the top of the list. Great memories of sitting on my Father’s lab while watching. This show will forever hold a place in my heart
This was a great video my mom and grandpa watched the crap out of it when I was a kid, I've only watched a small handful but one of my favorites was one of the first ones or maybe first one I saw when Donald Pleasance plays the wine connoisseur, I just liked his character and his acting
Currently watching this what I will say is, the ending to a case is always oh so satisfying it just makes you laugh and be amazed. This show is just to good. I also absolutely love Monk. I never missed it when it aired on tv.
I’ve been re-watching Colombo when I’ve been visiting my parents on the weekends. I didn’t know it went to 2003 though. Amazing show. Must see TV for anyone that wants to have a career in television.
The ultimate guest star on Columbo was none other than The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan. Not only was he the murderer in four episodes, he also directed several episodes. Even though the setup and payoffs in Columbo were sometimes formulaic, it never got boring because of the excellent writing and acting of the characters. Peter Falk was nothing less than a wizard.
I was actually in a film-class where the teacher used a clip from this show of Janet Leigh in of her last on-screen performances. It was surprisingly moving. =)
I was just talking about Columbo about an hour before I found this video had been released! I am super happy to have found this at such a timely and serendipitous manner! Thank you for a job very well done. I absolutely agree it should be left alone. It seems the execs always try to find great shows and redo them for cash grab. Usually, the updated versions seem like a cheap imitation and not flattering at all.
And just one more thing: Peter Falk IS Columbo. There is no adopting speech and mannerisms, that's just tasteless mimicry. Even if they decide to make the character totally unique, the actor will be pressured to make certain nothing is like Falk's, to the point it will be mechanical and absurd. Well, if they haven't already and I'm just unaware of it. Blissfully, at that.
Just started watching Columbo lately, and I had no idea how awesome he was. Now I understand why the show was so popular back. Because it was quality TV. Great character and stories. It flipped the "Who done it" trope to "How they done it"
About the "One more thing" line: Peter Falk says in the 1999 interview (Actors' Studio) that it was part of the original script so it was not invented while filming.
My wife and I go to sleep watching Columbo every night :-) My favorite is “Now You See Him” My wife’s “Try and Catch Me” with Ruth Gordon. Thank you for your insight on this fantastic phenomenon, additionally you are so correct Columbo left the building forever with Peter Falk!
I feel like Monk was the modern spiritual successor to Columbo. This very unassuming, weirdly-dressed guy that most people take for a joke, only for him to turn the tables by revealing the one piece of evidence they forgot to erase.
My brother had a friend who would purposely avoid the first 20 minutes or so, so that he wouldn't know how the murder was committed and then would try to solve it along with, Columbo.
My older brother, of ten years, has introduced me to some really great movies (The Taking Of Pelham 1,2,3 & Charley Varrick) some really great music (The Byrds & Tom Petty) and some really great TV shows (Faulty Towers & St. Elsewhere). But the best thing he ever introduced me to was Columbo! He had all of them on tape and some time in the early 1990s, he lent them to me to watch. I was around 20 years old and even though I was aware of the show growing up, I never fully grasped how wonderfully written and performed Columbo really was. It's what TV writers call "an open mystery", meaning it's not about whodunit. It's about how they done it and how Columbo was gonna catch them. And catch them he did, usually with a great "gotcha" moment. My favorite one being Robert Conrad in Exercise in Fatality. I think about that episode every time I tie my shoes. It's also one of the few times Columbo lost his temper with villain (Leonard Nemoy in A Stitch in Crime was another). Watching rumpled old Peter Falk play cat and mouse with top notch guest stars is one of life's little pleasures. Robert Culp, Jack Cassidy and Patrick MacGoohan, were among the very best. The show is a classic and a must for mystery lovers. FYI - another fantastic mystery show is Veronica Mars. A lot of people may have dismissed it, but much like Columbo, the writing is really smart.
Extremely well. I was21 when the it premiered and watched every episode both as it aired and in re-runs and have re-watched my most beloved episodes every Columbo's Day (October 10th) ever since.
Columbo was one of the greatest TV Movies / TV series ever made, you cant replace Peter Falk no way should they bring it back, we just should rewatch some of the best TV ever created.
I love this series. Actually I'm in process on refreshing all Columbo episodes. Fantastic show. Oh, one more thing...: Peter Falk create fascinating and iconic part. 🙂
Columbo’s first name of Frank is not cannon. It was just a prop person over stepping his job. The creators of Columbo and Peter all said this. His first name is unknown.
Columbo has been a favourite of mine since the first episode. The set up style of the murder and to see Columbo solve it with a twist on the murderer. Peter Falk's autobiography is titled "Just One More Thing". And it is good.
Ii truly enjoyed each and every episode of Columbo. When I saw the first episode of Mrs. Columbo, I was disappointed and couldn't stand to think of an episode two. It was like the creators never paid attention to the real Columbo series. They can't replace Peter Falk for sure, but he had many relatives to choose from, like George. I would like to see a nephew that looked up to his uncle Frank.
Columbo is my go-to thing whenever I'm bored or tense. No matter which episode I pull out the cigar box, I know I'll be well entertained. And that's something rarely experienced with an "old" TV show. It may not look flashy and it may not have a lot of gizmos or action scenes, but Columbo is not an Inspector Gadget nor a James Bond. He's a superhero, and his superpower is his brain and attention to detail.
My grandmother was a longtime fan of Columbo. I wish she was still around so I could talk with her about it, cuz I didn't become a Columbo fan myself till after she passed. I was surprised to learn how long the show lasted, even if it didn't have the typical episode run of most TV shows. I certainly did not know that they were still making new episodes while I was growing up in the 90s.
I wouldn't try to bring the character back to TV (I'm excluding stage adaptations) because of how integral Falk was to the role. However, if they have a completed script that has the fingerprints of William Link and Peter Falk all over it, e.g. Columbo's Last Case (if it was actually written, or had a thorough treatment produced), I'd like to see it produced as a final Columbo film. I'd have no objections to that, if it was properly cast and helmed by the right director.
"Columbo's Last Case" Amazon's print-on-demand should obtain the rights from Universal. I know I'd buy a copy to read. And I'd wager more than a third of the people on this channel would too.
Truly one of the greatest shows and tv characters of all time. You should have mentioned that Patrick McGoohan holds the record for most guest appearances on the show with 4 including directing 3 of 4 that he appeared in both the original run and the rival series. He also wrote and or directed a further two more making it a total of 6!!
Two small mistakes, one, it is not 100% canon that Columbo is called Frank. You can see a prop I think twice showing his ID saying indeed Frank, but that isn't canon. Second, the Nimoy episode is called a stitch in crime, not time lol. Other than that, nice video, well made.
Columbo was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I probably shouldn’t have been watching it but my parents let me. In fact, we watched it together lol! When my cousin would come over, we’d play detectives and I always fashioned myself after him with the walk and raspy voice. Good times.
Loved the first Columbo series but when he took the break from the character and later on tried to come back, I found that the magic was pretty much gone. I got the feeling that whomever was writing/directing etc. the show would instruct him to "do some Columbo stuff when you say the lines" and it will be better. For me, it just wasn't the same. On another note, people used to ask why we never saw his wife. It used to drive some people crazy as to whether or not she existed. I would tell them that the Richard Kiley episode proved to me that he was a bachelor by the look of his shoddy little apartment. "See that underwear in the dresser drawer? That's my underwear. See that hotplate" That's my hotplate."

I play that game too, I’ve just noticed I’m wearing my columbo t-shirt too.
Another good series to cover would be "Murder She Wrote" which was also written by the same writers who wrote "Columbo."
This show stands up better than just about any show from its era. You can watch any episode today, and still have fun.

Best How Catch’em ever
Not if they will get caught, but how they will get caught. Colombo always got his murderer.

I am 48, I went on a run of episodes, I think I have seen them all. I love Frank and his approach, his love for eggs and his pup.
Well done, JoBlo! Loved him and that show.
Hi :) I’m from Canada :) I watched Columbia growing up. Awesome video!!
You know that show is iconic and good if it is still being replayed numerous times and still being talked about it
Columbo was the Goat!!! I adore him!!! Oh, one more thing.... rest in peace, Peter Falk!!!💝💝💝
It flipped the "Who done it" trope to "How they done it"
How they catch 'em. IMHO, of course.
About the "One more thing" line: Peter Falk says in the 1999 interview (Actors' Studio) that it was part of the original script so it was not invented while filming.
Yeah I said that in the video
Robert Culp was a great villain in Columbo back in time a great detective indeed 👍👍
My wife and I go to sleep watching Columbo every night :-)
My favorite is “Now You See Him”
My wife’s “Try and Catch Me” with Ruth Gordon.
Thank you for your insight on this fantastic phenomenon, additionally you are so correct Columbo left the building forever with Peter Falk!
Great show. I particularly remember the one with Donald Pleasence. Legend.
I grew up watching Columbo sitting on my grandfathers lap. Fond memories. He had that distinct voice and mannerisms. The idylic 70's detective.
THE BEST DETECTIVE SHOW EVER! 😊. A great narration voice over also. 😮
I feel like Monk was the modern spiritual successor to Columbo. This very unassuming, weirdly-dressed guy that most people take for a joke, only for him to turn the tables by revealing the one piece of evidence they forgot to erase.
❤ Mr Monk too!
Actually monk is more Sherlock Holmes than columbo. Maybe even Poirot
My brother had a friend who would purposely avoid the first 20 minutes or so, so that he wouldn't know how the murder was committed and then would try to solve it along with, Columbo.
As I recall, there was an episode where we started with Lt. Columbo arriving on scene.
Smart love the idea. Ill rewatch and do that
My older brother, of ten years, has introduced me to some really great movies (The Taking Of Pelham 1,2,3 & Charley Varrick) some really great music (The Byrds & Tom Petty) and some really great TV shows (Faulty Towers & St.
Loved Veronica Mars although her mysteries were season long though
Extremely well. I was21 when the it premiered and watched every episode both as it aired and in re-runs and have re-watched my most beloved episodes every Columbo's Day (October 10th) ever since.
Columbo was one of the greatest TV Movies / TV series ever made, you cant replace Peter Falk no way should they bring it back, we just should rewatch some of the best TV ever created.
...and I've passed the torch. Both of my niece's love the show too (16 and 24).
I love this series. Actually I'm in process on refreshing all Columbo episodes. Fantastic show.
Oh, one more thing...: Peter Falk create fascinating and iconic part. 🙂
Loved watching this with my Dad.
My dad used to watch Columbo when he was younger.
I remember watching Columbo reruns when I was in college in the late ‘80s. All my roommates thought I was nuts.
Columbo’s first name of Frank is not cannon. It was just a prop person over stepping his job. The creators of Columbo and Peter all said this. His first name is unknown.
Dude you're doing an amazing work!!
Thanks
My whole family loves Columbo! But its so cute my niece is totally in love with mr.Columbo and wants to be mrs.columbo ! I love it!!
I'd do anything to be Mrs. Columbo lol
Columbo and Matlock, are shows I remember a lot. I hope you can do Remember Matlock show. Thank you.
God bless Peter Falk as one of the very best TV characters ever born. Always. 🙏👍
Columbo has been a favourite of mine since the first episode. The set up style of the murder and to see Columbo solve it with a twist on the murderer. Peter Falk's autobiography is titled "Just One More Thing". And it is good.
Just one more question…
That's when you knew the bad guy was fucked
GREAT VIDEO! i also discovered Columbo from Pushing Up Roses :D :)
Same which is why I made the video
Ii truly enjoyed each and every episode of Columbo. When I saw the first episode of Mrs. Columbo, I was disappointed and couldn't stand to think of an episode two. It was like the creators never paid attention to the real Columbo series. They can't replace Peter Falk for sure, but he had many relatives to choose from, like George. I would like to see a nephew that looked up to his uncle Frank.
Did not expect to hear Mr, Shades voice today. Solid birthday present.
thank u for making this video
Your welcome
Binge watched all of the episodes few years ago, now i feel have to do it again :)
Great work!!!!
great video. love the show.
Totally right. It really is the bar for detective shows
Do you have a ranking of Columbo episodes from best to worst? 🙏🙏🙏🙏
One of the best shows ever made!!!!!
David Arroyo and Jesse Shade just as good as Columbo when it comes to solving the mystery of why certain shows have been forgotten.
More Columbo videos please!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Columbo was a great detective. I loved watching this show
I wouldn't try to bring the character back to TV (I'm excluding stage adaptations) because of how integral Falk was to the role.
They should bring it back, Theyre called re runs and theyre still good
Honestly I just hope the series DVDs remain in rotation because it's a great show I got into it recently
I've seen just about every episode and I can't recall one instance where he is addressed as Frank. Where did you come up with that?
