  • "Knight Rider - A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.
Michael Knight, A young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent,
the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law."
So begins the opening narration of one of the most badass action tv series of the eighties, Knight Rider, starring the iconic David Hasselhoff and everyone's favorite Pontiac Trans Am, K.I.T.T. (voiced by William Daniels) as they fight crime in a quasi futuristic but very eighties Los Angeles. A terrific show (the brainchild of Glen A. Larson), over its five season run it became a pop culture staple, and there have been many attempts to reboot/remake it, but all have failed. Join us as we look into the history of this show on Gone But Not Forgotten! And also - I think we can all agree the Knight Rider theme is perhaps the greatest TV theme song of all time.

Little bit of trivia for you guys over at JoBlo. When casting the 2008 Knight Rider spin the producers wanted an actor who look like a young David Hasslehoff to play Michael Knight's son. They was reminded Michael Knight was born Michael Arthur Long who was played by Larry Anderson in the pilot so if anything Michael Knight's son will have to look like a younger version of Larry Anderson. Which is why Justin Traven got the role

The problem with remakes in general is they fail to understand the iconography of the source material: the sound of the car, the 80’s tech, the theme tune and intro, the gadgets etc. if you lose all of that you lose what made the show or movie special in the first place. Like what happened with the Ghostbusters remake. Why not do a new Knight Rider series set in the 80’s? Keep the original elements but have a new set of actors play the characters

    • @djgeorgetsagkadopoulos
      @djgeorgetsagkadopoulos Год назад +3

@@blackswanmedia712 I saw Top Gun Maverick, which is not a remake, but a sequel to a movie. However, they managed to get it right. Granted, it's a completely different thing, but with some good effort it can be done!
PS: For me personally, a remake/sequel cannot be done without the original car (KITT) which by it's own is a huge challenge. And I mean the 83 Pontiac Trans Am :P
But I'm willing to sacrifice the car "shell" if the "spirit" of it is going to get retained. A new "shell" car has to have the same "spirit" / "soul" as the original KITT though for a remake to be sucessfull. And that's not going to be easy. But it's not undoable.

Knight Rider's pilot doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's tight, well written, well directed, well acted, makes excellent use of its budget and has a perfect balance of tone. As a kid I was a huge Knight Rider fan. I loved the car, and at 8 years old, I also believed, I'd marry Hasselhoff when I grew up. 😂 For some years of my childhood, I lived in South Africa, and once a month we'd go to the city for a big grocery haul. One time, there was K.I.T.T. displayed in front of the store (it would have been a replica, but as a child I didn't realize that and my parents let me believe it was the real K.I.T.T. from the show). You could line up for a few minutes of sitting in the car and talking to it. The dashboard and buttons and lights all looked so real. Hidden somewhere was a guy with a microphone, who talked to you, but that, too, wasn't known to me back then. Of course, I took the chance, but I must have been so excited that today I can't remember anything of what I might have said to or asked "K.I.T.T.". 😅
Now I live in Germany, and once a year there's a big U.S. car show in my city, with old classic cars, muscle cars, Back to the Future DeLoreans, and, of course, at least two or three people come with their really awesome K.I.T.T. replicas. They put so much love and work into making them look totally authentic to the show, and each time I get to see them and peek inside, I remember that cool day from my childhood, where I believed I actually got to meet our favorite TV car. 😊

Knight Rider will always be one of my favorite shows. Yes, it is quite trashy when looking at it today, the quality is low even when compared other 80s shows, but that formula of comedy, action, and that car that has a real relationship with his driver is just really good.
It has to be said that in German the voice of KITT had a lot more personality and was a lot warmer and likeable, which is why I always watch this show in my native language when I want to rewatch it (I usually watch everything in its original English language).
Bonnie was never Michael's love interest by the way. Yes, he tried a few times early on, but that stopped rather quickly, the producers realized that it's not a good idea and none of the main characters ever getting funky with each other is something I really appreciate.
Knight Rider is also one of the few shows that got better every season. Seasons 3 and 4 are by far the best and the season 4 opener double episode Knight of the Juggernaut is my favorite episode. Super Pursuit Mode was a bit unnecessary, but I still liked season 4 the best.

Oh, man. I remember seeing KITT at some car show back in the 80's and you could stand in line to sit in the driver's seat and have your picture taken and he even talked, I guess some dude using a radio or something did his voice, and you could briefly converse with him. I distinctly remember asking if I could push the button for the ejector seat and KITT told me not to do it because it was very dangerous and I could get hurt because I didn't have Michael's training.

Knight Rider and Airwolf, me and my older brother loved watching those 2 shows after coming home from school in the afternoon. There was also M.A.S.H. which we didn't like that much, A-Team and McGyver, which we also like but usually had mom tell us to go outside to play, too much TV would make our eyes square shaped. Which of course we believed to be true, why would your mother blatantly lie to us boys right ?
Fun early and mid 80's times. Truly miss it

About Knight Rider...back in the '80s there was a Greek movie made with Greek actors and it was filmed (if i am not mistaken) mostly in my hometown Thessaloniki. The film was a parody/comedy of Knight Rider and it was called PSIT (the "I" is pronounced like the english letter E). It was a nice movie for its time. :)

Really enjoyed your video. Bought back a lot of good memories - particularly about how awesome 80s TV was back then. We always gathered around to watch Knight Rider. I'm glad you mentioned how the show started to wane in later seasons - you're absolutely right, I always laughed because whatever update Kitt was getting in the first minutes of the episode was of course exactly what Michael would need in the final situation whatever it was. Terrible. I remember when Kitt as made fireproof and of course, Michael and Kitt are caught in flames in the climax - oh wow! thank goodness Kitt had that fireproofing installed earlier on. LOL. Those were the days though. We had this, and of course the A-Team, MacGyver, Magnum, Airwolf etc... No they def don't make them like they used to.

The Hoff is up in years sure, But he still can act. For me? The best way I think for the movie would be to have David play Micheal again. BUT, He played into Devon's role. He runs F.L.A.G. now. He gives the keys to a newer KITT to a younger actor that can carry the movie just as he did in the '80s. My only thing is...Who would play the new guy? LOL

TRIVIA FACT - Actor Larry Anderson played Michael Long during the first act of the pilot, "Knight of the Phoenix". After realizing that an opening (at the casino) was required to make sense of the show's overall plot, additional scenes were abruptly written. Larry was called late in the afternoon to an audition, got the call that evening, and was on set the next day. David Hasselhoff later dubbed over Anderson's lines, noticeable by the scene in the car with Tanya where his mouth and sound don't seem to match exactly. Hasselhoff's replacement of Anderson happens in the desert roadside scene, just before the character of Michael Long is shot...but his face is hidden in darkness throughout that moment.
