    Hey all! Today I'm bringing you a pickup comparison with my Schecter Hellraiser 7 string. I've recently swapped out the EMG 707s for Fishman Abasi pickups, and figured I'd do a high gain head-to-head when swapping them over.
    Which one sounds the best? Write down in the comments below!
    Each amp sim may sound similar as I'm using the exact same GGD IR settings. The different amp sims are more so to showcase how the pickups handle slightly different distortion types. This will be tested further in my deep dive video.
    If you have any questions regarding anything mixing/production/instrument related, feel free to drop them as a comment below, and I'll try to reply to everyone :)

    That position 2 sound with the Abasi is crazy. So much Animals as Leaders.
    Thanks for putting this together, pickup sound seems like one of the most difficult (and expensive) things to gauge and there’s not much out there about it. Cheers!

      For sure eh! When I first played through the Position 2 setting, I was amazed at how much it sounded like the AAL tones. Now I've just got to practice double thumping 😂
      Glad I can help man! Probably should have done a video on the neck pickups as well, but I was too excited about the Abasi pickups haha

    EMG full humbucker mode smokes Fishman for me, but on the options Fluence has something that brings "funcionability", specially for someone that has just one 7 string guitar or need to use just one guitar professionaly or that just have one guitar.

    I like the versatility of the Fishmans, but the core 707 sound on the heavy tracks is just slightly nicer.

      I'd love to try pit the 707s against some Merrow sigs or some Moderns at some point ✌️ might have versatility + the better base sound.

    Great Review! Could you please report the intonation used? Thank you. By the way: which distortion was used as well, great tone!

    Thanks a lot for doing this comparison, it's the first one I've seen with good sound quality and without a hyped up moron/fanboy screaming OMG, WOW, greatest pickup ever every 2 minutes.
    Now I can see clearly that EMGs are just as good in their main role and while in terms of versatility there's no comparison, I can wait a little longer before swapping. Have you tried them in an 8 string and if so, are there any noteable differences?

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  3 года назад

      Cheers man! I know what you mean, there are some very subtle characteristic changes in the Humbucking modes, but the big difference is the split coil modes. There is a little more variation when you use Voice mode 2 in Humbucking mode (which I have on a push pull knob), but for some unknown reason I didn't demo that in this comparison. I haven't tried any active pickups on 8 string (both of my 8s are passive).

    Hi Tim. Did you also consider the fluence modern pickups? If so, what made you choose the Abasi set? I'm considering to replace the 707's in my Hellraiser with something less dark/muddy-sounding.

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  3 года назад +1

      Hey man! I did initially consider the Moderns and also the Keith Merrow signature set as well. I would have been happy with any of the three, but decided to go with the Abasi's as they seemed to be more tonally diverse than the others. Switching from Voice 1 to Voice 2 is noticeable, but switching to the single coil modes on the Abasi pickups is insane! That and I'm a Tosin Abasi fan haha

      Tim Murray So you have both voices available? Looking at the diagrams, the only option to have both voices with 2V 1T seems to be with a 5-way switch.

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  3 года назад

      Yep! I installed a 5 way switch in this guitar just so I could. The push/pull on the tone knob allows me to switch from Voice 1 to Voice 2, and then positions 2 and 4 on the switch activate Voice mode 3.

    • @bluyaris
      @bluyaris Год назад

      @@MatthijsvandenHoven you can also install 2 push pull, for example in the volumes, and use a 3 way switch. Or one push pull in one volume and another in the tone. The thing is to have 2 "switches"

    Dumb question, is it possible to do all voice switchings with 4 push/pull pots? I would like the 5 way switch, unfortunately i'm doing a LP build. Thanks!

    • @LivingTimmy
      @LivingTimmy  3 года назад +1

      It's definitely possible, but you may have to combine two wiring diagrams to get exactly what you want. If you go onto the Fishman Abasi page, under support they have wiring diagrams. One of them has two volume (push/pull), one tone, and a 3 way gibson toggle selector. All you'd have to do would be add a second tone knob for the fourth knob (or even just use a killswitch for the fourth hole). Hopefully that helps man, Fishmans in an LP would be sick! 🤘

      @@LivingTimmy Thank you! I'm starting to get paranoid that my custom build won't work. What do you think about this? Devin Townsend Pickups: Tone Knobs Pull for Voice 2 (any of the 3 positions), Volume Knobs Pull for Outer/Inner Pups (mid position)? I wonder what else do I need besides the additional P/P Pots? Which wires?

    In humbucker mode the EMGs sound better, in Split Coil the Fluences win completely
