I agree. I watched it all the time as a kid and then watched it college and I wept. And I’m beyond college by several years and I still cry. This movie is always in a top five. Maybe even top three
I love this movie. Nani is the hero of this movie. Barely an adult raising a child after their parents died, worrying about all the expenses, the love she has for Lilo is so beautiful and when she sang Aloha ‘Oe to Lilo, it was so heartbreaking!
I mean, Stitch is a one of a kind artificial being of full on intelligence to be aware of the fact that is GENETICALLY PROGRAMMED to be a murderous force of destruction and actively-- WILFULLY-- learns to be a force for good in the universe-- But sure, go whamens I guess.
@Devin Paul Damn this comment bothered u for no reason 🤣 Stitch has his merits, the film is literally named after him and focused on him. So yay but Nani gets no respect cause everyone is focused on the artificial grinch that learned to love. Nani can be praised, it doesn't take away from Stitch 🤣🤷🏽♀️
Shout out to David as well. Sure he and Nani clearly have feelings for each other, but he knows she needs to make Lilo a priority, but he still helps out as a friend without any real expectations for a romantic relationship.
The reason Lilo gives Pudge a sandwich is as she believes controls the weather and her parents died in a storm so she thinks if gives the fish a sandwich then bad weather won’t happen to cause anyone else to lose someone. Also if you look in the background of Nani's room you will not only see a Mulan poster, but many surfing trophies and she gave it all up to raise Lilo. Which going into the next point when they first showed the film to test audiences they were confused thinking Nani was Lilo's mom so to clarify this they have the word "Sister" said many times throughout the film.
Even as a kid, the part that got me was when Lilo threw her doll to the ground because the other girls didn't like it and then immediately comes back to hug it. She already felt ostracized for being different and she didn't want Scrub to feel the same way.
Genuinely had no idea until I read this comment, and suddenly I appreciate this movie even more than I already did. I'm now 21 years old and still the thought of having that responsibility is scary
@lordshenfan6625 Still very hard and scary for someone who just lost their family and is suddenly expected to care for a child all by themselves. My mother had her first child at 19 and had my dad supporting her but I still think it’s really sad and must have been very scary for her. I’m almost 22 and I’d never want to imagine myself in her situation. Maybe now I could handle it but it’s relatable to see how much she’s struggling to take care of a child suddenly all by herself. Of course they kept going, that’s all you can do, doesn’t mean it wasn’t a very difficult period in their life
fun fact: the pizza box oven door lilo was hiding in was actually the dryer, but Disney changed it for obvious concerns of kids hiding in the dryer. 😬 You can even see in the ending montage it was supposed to be the dryer.
My son loved this movie! He laughed so hard at Stitch's antics when he was little. But most importantly, the lesson at the end helped my son accept us as a broken family. My son's father abandoned us and I had to raise him on my own and there was a time when he has anger issues towards his father and I asked him, 'Do you feel incomplete?" He was silent...then I went on to say, "The 2 of us...we are family. Like what Stitch said 'small and broken...but still good' and it was important that he was able to relate it to the movie and in his young mind (he was 9y/o at the time), he was able to see that it's okay if there's only a Mama and no other siblings, it's okay to be lonely sometimes, it's okay to have bad days because there will be better days ahead. He learnt not to miss what he didn't have, he learnt that even without a father...our life goes on and we learned to complete our happiness with the help of friends and family. ❤---🇵🇭
Some Lilo & Stitch fun facts: Lilo & Stitch along with Mulan and Brother Bear were all animated at the former backlot of Disney's Hollywood Studios (then called Disney-MGM Studios) at Walt Disney World in Florida! Later, the setting was changed to Kauai. According to Dean DuBlois, a tour guide explained the idea of "ohana" to them and how the concept was an important part of the island's lifestyle. After this visit, they incorporated the idea of ohana to the movie.
wait, daveigh chase sang "the happiest girl" on big love! i never even watched that show but her performance (both acting and singing) were amazing in the clip!
Yes I already knew those other roles of Daveigh Chase. Thanks for sharing with others tho. Many ppl seem to hype up her role in Spirited away but Samara will always be my #1 fav role of hers. She even won an award for it! She’s not just another English dub of a Japanese franchise because Samara and Sadako are 2 different ppl with diff backgrounds. Lilo is a close 2nd fav of mine. Daveigh rules! I really use her!
They did a lot of research on Hawaii before they even started storyboarding and it paid off. I think the director also said he wanted to show a Hula as a legitumate skill and art as it never got any respect in hollywood beyond being seen as a sort of stripper move.
This is easily a top 5 Disney movie of all time, FOR SURE! Not only are the animation and environments beautiful, but both sides of the story are engaging. As a kid I was mostly engaged by the Stitch story, but now, as an adult, Lilo and Nani’s story is one of the most relatable and endearing of any animated film I’ve ever seen
“Oh good, my dog found the chainsaw.” 🤣 I just love Lilo and Stitch!! Loved your reaction! This movie has so much depth to it, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.
This movie is really special not only because I can literally word for word the entire intro up to the title sequence but when I visited Disney in Orlando they were actually working on the film and I got to see animation in progress during the animation tour as well as watch the lead for Stitch draw him live. And this was over a year before the marketing started coming out for the movie. So not only does it hold a special place in my heart but it was a core memory of my childhood.
Reminds me of when I went to Disney and saw the opening moment of the Lion King like, a year or two before the first trailer was released. There are perks to going on tours at Disney
I love the speech that Stitch makes to the Grand Councilwoman. "This is my family. I found it all....on....my own. It's little and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good." 🥺🥺😭😭
I was pretty neutral toward this movie as a kid, but as I got older, the more I loved it, and especially the more I loved Nani. She's now one of my favorite Disney characters, and I wish she got more recognition from Disney because I would buy so much merch with her on it lol
The song Nani sings to Lilo after Cobra Bubbles tells her that he is going to take Lilo away is Aloha 'Oe, which was written by the last queen of Hawaii and, if I remember right, she sang it to her people after the US forced her to give up Hawaii to the US. It really says a lot about what Nani is feeling in the moment. A deep sorrow, a sense of duty, the gnawing feeling of failure, complete hopelessness.
It's okay that you didn't watch this when it came out because this movie gets better when you're an adult. As a kid you love it because Stitch is adorable and the action is fun. As an adult you really feel for Lilo and Nani's story.
I was around 4 when I first saw this movie, as it was on DVD just sitting on our shelf. 16 years later, at age 20, and I still love Stitch as much as I did back then. I still sometimes look at my actual dog and wonder why he’s not like Stitch
I absolutely adore this film. Lilo’s a tiny surfer obsessed with Elvis with a pet alien. How could anyone not love?! The music, the aesthetic, the bond between Nani and Lilo, Stitch learning what ‘family’ means.
The silly "pizza box oven door" Lilo hides behind was originally a dryer sitting next to the washer. After the film's original DVD release, Disney didn't want to encourage children to hide in dryers, so they edited the dryer into a shelf with a pizza box in front of it in all future versions, however, they only changed it in that one scene and you can see the dryer later in the film. Continuity errors 🤪 People just recently started to notice the edit after the launch of Disney+ included this version of the film.
This is one of Disney’s classic movies that has appeal to kids but was adult enough people would be willing to sit through it with the kids. In the backstory they explain Cobra Bubbles working with the kids because he had worked with the parents before they died. As they say in the Lion King, it’s all about the circle of life.
I saw this in theaters as a kid and I don’t think it made me cry. But as an adult it definitely does! So many touching moments. I definitely think it’s one of the funniest disney movies of the early 2000s.
I saw it in theaters as a kid too and didn’t understand the nuance of it all. NOW? probably my second favorite Disney movie, i heavily relate to the family issues + my first/only dog had a HEAVILY similar personality to stitch ☹️ so i have cried watching it every time. Best Disney movie of this century 🥹
I've encountered some who don't like this movie, but I LOVE IT. As someone who's autistic, I see Stitch as an autistic person. We're sometimes viewed as monsters, but we simply want to fit in and find our way in the world rather than be frowned upon. Not to mention, he and Lilo love Elvis Presley, and I became an Elvis buff when I was a kid, dressing up as him one year for Halloween when I was eight. Also, love the fact the Lilo & Stitch directors went on to direct How To Train Your Dragon over at DreamWorks. Toothless was partly inspired by Stitch!
That's dope for you, I love when a characters story can speak so well so someone's personal life. I feel the same kind of connection will Miles morales giving the setting and events in the comics. Some people cant understand because they've seen thems self's portrayed on screen for decades or all their life, but it's truly a special thing when you feel "seen" in media.
i resonate with Lilo A LOT her "i remember everyone who leaves" hits me hard as someone who has lost a lot of people in seemingly a short amount of time and doesn't really have anyone now, one of which was a dog i was very close with almost 6 month ago named Nanook, he was my Stitch. his name actually was almost Stitch bc of how much i have loved Stitch from this movie.
One of my favourite Disney movies.. What I love most about it is haw far into the broken family thing... the most realistic darkness they have ever tackled due to the realistic nature of the spiralling of their situation.
when I saw you were already crying within the first 10 minutes, I knew you were gonna lose it throughout the entire movie lol when little Stitch goes out into the woods and cries "I'm lost" I always tear up. also, I just have to shout out the amazing voice casting of Ving Rhames as Cobra Bubbles; he was such a standout to me! thanks for this amazing reaction John ❤
Stayed at my friends house for a weekend and his parents took us to watch it in the Cinema, safe to say it was a treat, the themes in the movie are so universal yet the film doesn't feel pandering in any way, Lilo although precocious always acts and reacts honestly like a clever kid that age would, Nani's situation is both tragic yet heartwarming as she tries her best to keep the family together, David could've been simply a comedic character but he understands Nani, gives her space and is there when both of them need support, 10/10 masterpiece, even the animated series is surprisingly good *PS. Obviously no need to mention the music 😍
I’m a grown lady and I still have my Lilo doll from childhood but this movie is so heartwarming and the family dynamic is different than you normally see. There’s always a dead parent but one sibling actively raising another and struggling is so hard but beautiful. Also the original music especially during the surf is gorgeous.
I love Lilo and Stitch. I love how Nani gets Lilo and never made her feel less than, I love her support on developing Lilo’s pictures, gets her dark humor, and even told the shelter worker too let her name Stitch. Another fun fact “Lilo”means “lost” and “stitch” means “put together” the title translates to Lost and Put Together. Also the background of the scenes like the sky and landscape is all water color. It’s a beautiful movie.
I adore this movie! Within in it is one of the sweetest and most healthy romance pairings across Disney - Nani and David are excellent roll models for us all ❤️
There's also the fun fact that he doesn't doubt for a moment that he has a great butt, but he's surprised she likes his hair. Oh, and despite being very weirded out by him, he constantly tries to bond with Stitch, including petting him while they surfed.
They really are great! I love how David doesn’t push for more immediate attention from Nani because he knows how much she has on her plate, but he sticks around and supports her and her sister where he can.
Our parents took me and my brother to see this premiere at the drive-in. One of my favorite family memories of us piled in the back of our van with tons of blankets, eating snacks watching this together.
I didn't watch this or The Emperor's New Groove until I was about 30, and I'm supremely grateful. I feel like I loved them more as an adult than I ever would have as a child. Groove seriously had me laughing my ass off at points as a grown ass man. haha
Wife and I saw this when it first came out and fell in love with the movie and Hawaii. It sounds fickle, but here it is, 20 years later, and we still love this movie and Hawaii. One thing that's really sunk in since then, having kids and dealing with life, is how much more I appreciate about the background. And Lilo as neurodivergent.
I saw somewhere a theory that Lilo feeds the fish that controls the weather because that's the reason her parents died. So she's scared it would happen again.
I love that this movie combines an incredibly real and intense human story and a weird destructive little space alien totally seamlessly. Also when you said that the dearest little girl played Lilo, you were absolutely right, she gave such a sweet performance, but all I could think about is how she's also Samara from The Ring 😂
Daveigh Chase RULES! Years ago I was shocked she also played Samara! Now I freaking love it! Daveigh is a chameleon and I REALLY miss her in the acting industry! Lilo and Sam will always be my 2 fav roles of hers!
Being in my early 20s when this movie came out, I had absolutely no interest in going to the theater to see it. It was my cousins turn to pick a movie at the theaters, and she picked this one. I went into the theater, wanting it to be over fast, and ended up disappointed when it was over. Everything about this movie is wonderful.
Man this is such a good movie. I still watch it from time to time. Maybe it's just me getting older but this movie definitely makes me more emotional than it used to. The TV series was really fun also.
I remember when I was younger I begged my dad to take me to see this in theaters. We had to walk all the way to the theater to see it and it was worth it! One of my favorite memories of growing up❤️
25:18 fun fact; the first skaters were some surfer bros that wanted to surf, but the waves weren't very choice, so they slapped some wheels on a board and surfed the pavement instead 🤙
Lilo and Stich is one of the first movies I remember seeing in theaters at least 3 times. Throughout the years every time I watch it breaks me, the hammock scene... Idk exactly what it is about this film that hits so hard, but the relationship between Nani and Lilo feels like the crux of it.
"Oh good, my dog found the chainsaw!" One of the best lines ever crated for a movie. It is utterly random and spoken by a child, perfection. This movie is so good. This movie was very nearly locked and done editing when 9/11 happened. They had to completely reanimate the climactic scenes because originally... Stitch and crew stole a 747 and flew it through downtown Honolulu, nearly wrecking several buildings. They basically animated over as much as they could and created new for the shots they couldn't. So the 747 became the giant red spaceship, downtown buildings turned into the mountains and valleys. There's a video of the original out there on RUclips. It's impressive how quickly they were able to turn around on this.
One of my favorite franchises Disney has ever done. I love all the movies, I grew up watching and loving the show, I even have, I think, a 1:1 size Stitch plushie I got at the Times Square Disney Store years ago.
Rewatching this as an adult, with a lot more understanding of the world, this tore me up. It was my favorite movie as a kid. Like most Disney movies, a lot of the content went over my head.
One of my fav kid movies, even though I watched it as a teen. I love wynonna judds version of burning love. This movie was what really got me into elvis
The reason for lilo taking pictures of the tourists is because at one point Hawai truly became a place for tourists. They would come and basically invade the culture and people so this is lilos way of getting back at them
As a Hawaii boy this is nice blend of cultural references and just a good original story and IP. It also happens to be the 50th anniversary of Elvis's infamous Hawaii Concert. We owe Elvis for Funding the Arizona Memorial. His imprint on Hawaii is more than just a plot point.
Fun fact the spaceship chasing scene had to be completely redrawn from the original you can find the original here on RUclips, fully voiced too. The original scene had stitch in the crew stealing a 747 and flying it through the city destroying buildings, it had to be redrawn because guess what happened just before this movie was finished (this came out in 2002 mind you). Honestly I think the redrawn scene is better than the original
11:52 that pizza box next to a washer is from the censored version, they didn't like the idea of Lilo hiding in a dryer in the original for safety reasons for they changed it from a dryer door opening to a pizza box
11:41 This scene was edited for Disney Plus. Originally she was hyping in their dryer, but people thought their kids would take after Lilo here and climb inside their dryers, so they changed it to a cabinet with a pizza box
I highly recommend you look up stuff about this movie. Like how Lilo in Hawaiian means "pulled apart" so the name of the movie is literally "Pulled Apart and Stitched Together." They also had to completely change the climax of the movie because of 9/11. You can find the original online. Also several deleted scene between Lilo and Nani that were taken out because it "made Nani look too much like Lilo's mother" like one where Nani tells Lilo a bedtime story.
This was great, Lilo & Stitch will always have a special place in our hearts. I love too how surprised people always are at how the movie starts. It took us all by surprise in the best way. 😄
"I believe they spun other stuff out of this" Yep, three sequels and a TV show. There's also an anime and a Chinese anime but we don't talk about those. If you ever feel like continuing forward with this and want to see where they took the story the order to watch them in is: this movie -> Lilo & Stitch 2 -> Stitch(Short, can find on RUclips easily) -> Stitch The Movie -> Lilo & Stitch The Series -> Leroy & Stitch. It's worth watching
As a native Hawaiian living in Hawai'i, it's almost impossible to not have seen this movie at any point growing up (though, as I grew up I ended up getting mixed feelings about the representation, especially being fortunate enough to grow up learning about/experiencing both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian culture)
This is my all time favorite from childhood!!! Absolutely everything in it is lovely and heart warming. Also about Nani's surfing skills: she actually used to compete and probably stopped after her parents passed so she could support Lilo, but in the scenes in her bedroom you can see all the trophies and medals she got from surfing, so yeah, she is quite good at it!
11:35 Cool curiosity the reason why Lilo was hiding behind a pizza box is because it was originally a clothe dryer but after some time disney told them to substitute it afraid of kids hiding inside dryers ang getting hurt.

This movie gets better the older you get. You truly grow to understand how nuanced, mature, substantial and beautiful it is
For sure, I feel like the older you get, the more parts of the movie make you cry. (And I was an adult when I first saw it!)

@@silverstar1178 … you figured it out. That’s exactly why Lilo keeps feeding him. So that is wouldn’t happen again
There was also a deleted scene that had Stitch accidentally killing Pudge.
It was deleted because it was too dark and disturbing.

I saw this in theaters as a kid and I don’t think it made me cry. But as an adult it definitely does! So many touching moments. I definitely think it’s one of the funniest disney movies of the early 2000s.
Kid me didn't really like lilo & stitch when I saw it, but as an adult it's my favourite Disney film.

As a kid I mainly paid attention to Stitch and his antics and didn’t pick up on the family dynamics
I never knew the connection between L&S and HTTYD but you can feel it!! How cool.
Lilo reminds me of autistic daughter this movie hurts my heart in the best way
Lilo I see is autistic too. Like me
I think they also said lilo was on the spectrum and nerodivergent also
i resonate with Lilo A LOT her "i remember everyone who leaves" hits me hard as someone who has lost a lot of people in seemingly a short amount of time and doesn't really have anyone now, one of which was a dog i was very close with almost 6 month ago named Nanook, he was my Stitch. his name actually was almost Stitch bc of how much i have loved Stitch from this movie.
I love this movie. SO heartfelt. A classic.
Stayed at my friends house for a weekend and his parents took us to watch it in the Cinema, safe to say it was a treat, the themes in the movie are so universal yet the film doesn't feel pandering in any way, Lilo although precocious always acts and reacts honestly like a clever kid that age would, Nani's situation is both tragic yet heartwarming as she tries her best to keep the family together, David could've been simply a comedic character but he understands Nani, gives her space and is there when both of them need support, 10/10 masterpiece, even the animated series is surprisingly good
*PS. Obviously no need to mention the music 😍
It was such a pleasure watching your reaction and getting to sob along with you. You are an absolute gem 💛🙏🏽
This movie still tugs at the heart 😭😭
And Lilo as neurodivergent.
hands down one of my top 5 from that era of Disney animation!! Loved your reaction!!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Such great characters, really pulls on my heartstrings.
I’m not a Huge Disney fan but this movie is my all time favourite so many great memories
This movie makes me cry every time!! Idk how they do it but it’s brilliant
I always loved the use of Elvis music in this film
Nostalgic film indeed. I saw this in the theater when I was 5
This movie was a huge part of my family growing up, it was only me and my mom for most of my life so now I understand more why it was always on
I remember when I was younger I begged my dad to take me to see this in theaters.
Love Lilo and Stitch! You guys should watch Treasure Planet and Atlantis too - both are great early 2000s Disney movies!
Rewatching this as an adult, with a lot more understanding of the world, this tore me up. It was my favorite movie as a kid. Like most Disney movies, a lot of the content went over my head.
Lilo and Stitch was my first introduction to Elvis. I remember playing the soundtrack on repeat as a kid until the cd got to many scratches. 😂
One of my fav kid movies, even though I watched it as a teen. I love wynonna judds version of burning love. This movie was what really got me into elvis
John, my guy, glad you’re finally seeing this but how have you never seen this? 😂 one of the best of the Disney classics.
The reason for lilo taking pictures of the tourists is because at one point Hawai truly became a place for tourists. They would come and basically invade the culture and people so this is lilos way of getting back at them
This movie is so heartwarming
As a Hawaii boy this is nice blend of cultural references and just a good original story and IP. It also happens to be the 50th anniversary of Elvis's infamous Hawaii Concert. We owe Elvis for Funding the Arizona Memorial. His imprint on Hawaii is more than just a plot point.
Ohana means family. Family means no-one gets left behind or forgotten. ❤
Stitch was my childhood spirit animal!
Def waiting to watch the full movie with u when I get home! So happy you’re watching! One of my faves and 1 of the funniest Disney movies!
This movie is part of my soul mate. Glad you liked it ❤
11:52 that pizza box next to a washer is from the censored version, they didn't like the idea of Lilo hiding in a dryer in the original for safety reasons for they changed it from a dryer door opening to a pizza box
One of the greatest soundtracks ever.
Childhood classic
The songs slap too 😅
Also if you guys haven't, you should check out Meet the Robinsons, great Disney movie.
The promo for this movie is the best marketing Disney ever thought of 😂
I DIED laughing when Stitch invaded the Lion King and Little Mermaid!
This was great, Lilo & Stitch will always have a special place in our hearts. I love too how surprised people always are at how the movie starts. It took us all by surprise in the best way. 😄
"I believe they spun other stuff out of this"
Yep, three sequels and a TV show.
As a native Hawaiian living in Hawai'i, it's almost impossible to not have seen this movie at any point growing up (though, as I grew up I ended up getting mixed feelings about the representation, especially being fortunate enough to grow up learning about/experiencing both traditional and contemporary Hawaiian culture)
grew up watching it and love it also you will probably cry watching the second movie
Love watching reaction of my childhood movies. Gives me that nostalgia, feels like seeing it for the first time again.
I remember watching this on theaters and I still remember getting the happy meal toys from McDonald's
I hadn’t seen this until 2011 so don’t feel too bad! It became an instant fave! Enjoyed your reaction!💜
The moment Stich first walks in the house and hisses as the light comes on cracks me up every time.
Great Reaction, This Disney movie was one of my favorites
i love how he says its the "first" yet its number is 626 and the 1-625 are also like it
One of my all time favorite movies since childhood. So glad you finally got to enjoy and experience it John!
90 - 2005 some of the best disney animation for me. My top 3 being Lion King, Tarzan and Stitch.
Lion King is #1 for me! It’s a masterpiece! Followed by Mulan
Miss 90s Diseny
last year was it's 20th Annvisery. Lilo and stitch make a great team. LOVE LILO and Nani
Exactly what I needed not feeling good about life right now
Yes! I love John movie reactions! 💃🏻
My favorite Disney movies ever growing up rather surprised this is your first time watching
The pizza box was an edit, in the original version of the film it's a dryer xD
This movie always makes me cry. I love the relationship between Nani and Lilo
This movie is one of the best things Disney has ever put out. It still holds up.
Great reaction 🙂 Always loved Lilo & Stitch.
This is one of my favorite movies !! It makes me cry every time I watch it D;
"You just don't have the meats"
That really got me
Also, that "dear little girl" playing Lilo is the same actress that played Samara in The Ring. xD
Thats because Daveigh Chase is a chameleon queen! Love her
This was so delightful. Thanks for this.
this is my all time favorite childhood movie. i still love it the music makes me cry every time. i am thinking about getting a stitch tattoo
