I am a camera operator and my shot was the cross 2 shot pushing into Willie. It was amazing. I will never forget that particular CMA Awards show. Thank you for doing this!
I asked this question in the main thread, but I guess maybe I should have asked it here, since you were there: Was she originally supposed to be part of the performance, or did she go out there because Willie seemed to be in such distress?
@martinhenderson923 It was planned for her to come in after the second verse. I can't remember how rehearsals went though. We all felt for Willie though.
@@MrBlueskyguy Thanks for the response. I know country loves those walk-ons. I remember back when I was a much younger man and followed country more closely (my wife's not a fan) and George Jones walked on to a Barbara Mandrell song -- I think it was "I was country when country wasn't cool." But this moment with Willie is one that I've never seen nor heard about, and it was touching, to be sure. And I appreciate Palmisano for his treatment of it. This was a really enlightening 10 minutes of my life. Thanks for your response, and I'm glad you were able to be a part of it and that you appreciate it.
My mom passed in 2015. She had cancer and dementia, she didn’t recognize her own kids… Near the end we were all with her in her home and flipping down the dial (she loved TV/ music) her favorite singer of all time, Willie Nelson… We came upon a WN concert. For the next 45mins she came out of her fog. Singing along remembering her kids names smiling, lucid, and happy. Once the concert ended, she slipped back into the fog… I’ll always love Willie just for this one hour of happiness back in 2015… The pain, confusion, and fear swept away as Willie sang about being on the road again. Thank you for sharing this and awakening a warm memory in my mind. Music the balm that soothes all ills. Amen 🙏🏻
I was just telling my friends today that one month before my mom died (Alzheimer’s and brain tumor) she sang her and my father’s song - Moon River. When she was finished she gave a heartache type of look downward. She remembered him. He had died 40 years prior to her. It’s the best video and memory of her musical gifts. If you haven’t watched it, look for the Glen Campbell documentary of his journey with Alzheimer’s and songs
This had me in tears, brought back a memory of my grandpa. Had been completely non-responsive for days. A distant cousin came and sang a few old songs he loved. Out of nowhere he woke up and sang along to his favorite old church song. Once the song was over he just went back to sleep with a smile on his face. He died later that evening. Thanks for sharing your story. It triggered that memory of my grandpa, from what feels like a whole lifetime ago.
This wasn’t the most technical reaction, I didn’t learn how to be a better guitar player or gain some deeper understanding of the theory behind the tune, but I did learn how to be a better performer, how to appreciate the subtleties of both of their performances, and I cried a little bit. This is my favorite thing that you’ve ever done. Thank you.
This clip is a masterclass in expert professional performance. There's an axiom of theatrical improvisation that whatever your partner says you respond, "Yes, and..." That's all through this.
12:00 - Bro. Vince Gill & Patty Loveless, “Go Rest High on that Mountain” at George Jones’s farewell at the Opry. Ten years ago I think, on YT. Patty gave him so much space and support. One of my all time favorites of both of their performances.
Its been replaced with synthetic empathy. Synthetic sympathy. People are now using that which was pure back in the day, as fake and mainstream. We are done as a society. Only few good untainted people left in western society.
I got to cook for Willie Nelson one time. I cooked for alot of stars, it was just part of the job, but cooking for Willie was one of the times that I was really proud of and grateful for the opportunity to do. To share my work with someone who has shared their work with me.
I can't deny it - I cried. It goes without saying that I love Willie Nelson. Anyone who disagrees is wrong! Kacey Musgraves has a voice that melts my heart. Her song "Follow your arrow" literally changed my life. If baffles me why some people don't like country music. It's raw, real and comes straight from the heart. Michael, you're an inspiration - and a bloody nice bloke!
Vince Gill singing Go Rest High on That Mountain at George Jones funeral. Saw it the other day and was completely shattered. I’m sure you’ve seen it, but it’s 100% worth another watch.
There's always Patty Loveless helping Vince Gill sing Go Rest High on that Mountain during the George Jones funeral when Vince got too choked up to sing. It will bring tears to your eyes.
It hurts to see Willie like this but there's such beautiful interaction here between them. So much respect and kindness. I'm not a country music fan so I'd never have seen this without you making this video, Michael, so thank you. "It'll all be alright" made me shed a tear. Edit: I wrote this before getting to the end of the video. Watching you try to hold it together while your kids were trying to get in was hilarious. One of the many reasons I love your channel. Honest and real.
My first thought was why would they let him on stage. At this stage in his life it can't do his legacy any good. Immediately thereafter I thought thank God they did. We were blessed to see this. Thanks MP! This is why I follow MP. I started playing the mandolin in 2020 at 57 years old. The things I learn from MP about music and stage presence I just can't get anywhere else.
Yeah, that got me... Stardust came out in '78, and 7 short years later in '85, thanks to my parents, in kindergarten I would walk home every day from the bustop, humming (and litterally walking on) the Sunny Side of the Street. Good memory I can visualize til this day. ❤
Michael Palmisano, I've watched your channel enough to see that you know struggle, that this knowledge makes you notice when others are struggling. I see that you know about overcoming struggle, so you notice when others are struggling to overcome. This is why I watch. Please let your kids break in next time, so we can meet the ones who helped make you this man. Love, struggle, forgive. Love more. Struggle will visit again.
I saw Willie and George Straight live at Willie's birthday bash last year. I cried the entire show because you could tell he was struggling. I love him so much. He's been a part of my life since I was a little girl and I'm gonna miss him when he's gone, but he will forever live on in our hearts.
The kids in the background pounding at the door makes this all the more human and relatable. I love the things you show us, Michael. I never would’ve seen this performance or the subtleties if you hadn’t made a video. Beautiful.
I burst into tears seeing Willie struggle with his song! He is a beautiful legend in country music and him struggling broke my heart! And the lady singing with him is an angel indeed!
The idea of a true epitome of country is captured in the fog of nostalgia for a time and rural existence that's changed. I'd rather listen to Willie or Waylon or George Jones. They were the lodestones of my rural upbringing but that was generations ago and the rural populace has an access to things wider than terrestrial radio and the inborn folkish catalog of their parents, siblings and peers. Country music for better or worse has changed because the audience and the inhabitants of the country have changed.
Willie hasn’t been like this always since then. He must have been temporarily sick here, because I’ve seen him twice after this, and he was strong as hell, singing and playing.
Made me tear up... I don't watch TV and so glad you shared that moment. Always love KC Musgraves, for sure! She is the real deal. And Willie will always be Willie - until he isn't anymore. I'm just here for the music, Hugs.
I got to admit, this made me cry, and I’m a tough son of a B…the respect and care that was shown between artists, not the tearing apart …is what this world needs, if every You Tuber could put one vid out a week like this one, showing our humanity, the world would be a better place for it. Thank you for being real.
I love to see a legendary artist get his flowers while still around. As roadworn as that red-headed stranger is, I can unsympathetically say that their voices sounded *beautiful* together.
Isn't human compassion and empathy, just the most beautiful thing? I wish for our world, and all of our sakes, that we would see and experience this so much more often. So touching and beautiful.
People may not all like or appreciate country music, but it's the one industry in the arts where there seems to be more humility and respect for other human beings!!!!
He is 90 now, so he must have been 85 then. What a special memory for all those lucky enough to be in that audience. Loved seeing Thomas Rhett& the Lady A gang with tears. They know they are witnessing a legend. Casey did a beautiful job & her grace was lovely to see.
When she puts her arm around him and sings “It’ll all be alright” - that hit harder than a Pixar movie. As musicians the connection we can have on stage is really special and unique. But this is an entirely other level. Beautiful moment, and I loved hearing your commentary on it. Thanks for sharing.
This is first time Ive ever seen this and it is absolutely heartbreaking to see Willie like this. Im not a Country Music fan at all but I have respect for all types of music and I grew up with Willie always being played. All parents and their friends listened to while I was growing up was Country. I love that Kacey came out and instantly you could see how comfortable Willie was but almost the sadness in his face not being able to deliver a song like he always has. I can only imagine how hard it must be knowing that people expect a certain sound when they see your name and then you just psychically unable to deliver like everyone expects. Nothing but respect and love for Willie.
I think you misunderstood something, he may have been struggling to sing and remember the lines, but his timing was impeccable. That's his style of timing. He developed it in the latter half of his career
Willie Nelson will always be one of my favorite singer/songwriters and the fact he's stuck with one single guitar the entirety of his career shows how much he treasures what's in his life. You can also see that in the people around him - he is loyal to friends and family. I'm not much for the newer artists, coming from an entirely different generation than them, but I can tell you this is special. There's a comment below saying this isn't one of your most technical reviews. Nobody has learned to become a better guitar player. But I think we all have learned there is something special about being kind and considerate, and this review has taught us a little piece of that. Thank you Michael!!
Geeze that made me bawl like a baby. Just got back from visiting my 76 yr old dad whom I haven’t seen in 3 yrs and who is deteriorating fast. That one got me hard in the feels.
I can't tell you the amount of respect I have for Willie getting up and doing this. He's a legend. He used to own the stage. Now, he has to rely on the helpful hand of a young woman to guide him. It isn't like he didn't know what would happen. He did it to show respect to the audience. There are so many lessons to be learned here.
I don't like country music in general but I really loved this and it made me cry like four times, you are awesome and please keep doing everything that you do
Michael, you are an amazing guy who has struggled to carve out a very needed and special place in the music world. No one conveys their enthusiasm and love of music in such a genuine and instructive way. Aside from being an impressive musician and teacher you are introducing your public to some very emotionally moving artists and shows. Your belief in putting family first is admirable. I wish you only the best. Keep on keepin’ on.
Michael, I consider this one of your best and most important videos, bar none. Being as I've listened to Willie for 60 years, even years before he had his iconic ponytail and when he had a near crew-cut 'hairstyle', this performance brought me to tears for a 2nd time (original 2019 performance, and then now). It's so hard to watch a legend who could literally play in his sleep (or under a near .40 blood alcohol content), now aged to where he can't even remember a song's lyrics and struggles so hard to perform (yet he did it!, all thanks to Kacey Musgraves). You're a very special person to recognize the depth of this and to highlight it with this video. Thank you!
Yeah, I’m not cryin’ 😢. Allergies. My superhero dad is getting to this age so it hits close to home. Thank you for honoring this kindness and compassion. It’s in such short supply these days. 🙏🙏🙏
Willie is such a fucking legend, and I got to see him in concert a couple months ago, and it was amazing to just see him sitting there on stage in front of me
I remember watching the 2014 CMA awards show when Kacey did a duet with the queen of country Loretta Lynn. You could see the respect & admiration Kacey had for Loretta and it was a kind of passing of the torch moment. This performance once again shows her respect & admiration for the legends of country music that paved the way for a new generation to follow. I met Kacey in 2014 when she was touring for her "Same Trailer Different Park" album. She was very humble , friendly & down to earth.
Another respect path you could hunt down Michael: Stevie "Guitar" Miller talking about his relationship with a mentor. I don't know if there's video, but I saw his Las Vegas House of Blues concert about a dozen years ago. Perhaps the dozenth time I've seen Steve play. Never have I heard him tell so many tales and switch guitars so many times. He talked about his godfather who taught him his first chords and that influence on his future career. Much respect was expressed for a man for whom Steve had delivered the eulogy in 2009. The guy's name was Les Paul. It was an unusually intimate show, and I think you would find Steve's "tip of the hat" to Les Paul to be rather moving, if you could find any record of it. Thanks for doing this video - it's awesome!
What a beautiful human Kacey is ! She shows what a wonderful person she is , helping Willie out it's the best thing I have seen for a long time thank you
I've seen him live 3 times now and I'll see him as long as he wants to your. But it's like this and I could care less, I'm there to pay respect to one of heros. We'll all sing the words you can't Willie. We love you.
The beautiful moment between Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile at the Newport music festival in 2022 when they sing “both sides now” will forever be my version of this moment. The folk/Americana moment ❤️
Hi Michael.....First my dear friend when we all lose people we care about Stairway to Heaven just touches our souls. I hear so many people relate to Eric Clapton. Thank you Michael for your share. I honestly from my soul to yours am so sorry you lost a friend. No matter who we lose 8n a minute of our time, these people stay with us in spirit. Value of our human brothers and sisters is recognized by us both. Bless you Michael. May the energy and love of our God within you forever. Amen my friend. Amen...Carolyn and Colin from Canada
Wow - nice lesson here today in seeing what many people often miss - not only the epitome of respect...but of humanity , true compassion and human empathy. Showing this today also speaks really well of you , Michael , you're a good hearted man. As an older man myself , I don't mind admitting I actually got a little emotional on this one. Thanks for taking the time to notice and put this one together the way you did - you did really good !!😊❤
Ok so I just found your channel. (Thank you God) I’m not a musician or even a constant lover of music. I haven’t shed a tear in years. But Michael, you must be my archangel because after watching this video I caved and shed a few much needed tears. Your connection to what is real and important as well as the beautiful way you articulate it is unmatched. I will continue through your post and no doubt find the tears I have been longing to release. Thank you for taking down some of my hardened walls. Journey on! ❤
Welp didn’t know I would be crying but here I am. Miss all of my country heroes and damn out hurts to see Willy struggling but so damn Happy he is still with us
The last “It will all be alright” was completely emblematic about what we just watched on stage. And her voice made that line sound as beautiful to my ears as the performance did to my eyes.
Wow man this hit deep. Willie we love you brother and may all the loved ones you’ve lost be waiting for you on the day god calls you. A true legend and what a beautiful person.
I am a camera operator and my shot was the cross 2 shot pushing into Willie. It was amazing. I will never forget that particular CMA Awards show. Thank you for doing this!
Amazing to have someone in the community who was actually there for that moment. Just pure magic.

Empathy is the missing ingredient in this world of ours. This is beautiful.

I admit that I teared up myself. This moment was a blessing
There's a lot of "pop" country now that lacks the feeling. But we'll always have the good stuff to fall back on. ✌️🤍🇺🇲🎶
Vince Gill singing Go Rest High on That Mountain at George Jones funeral. Saw it the other day and was completely shattered. I’m sure you’ve seen it, but it’s 100% worth another watch.
Not just the "epitome of True Country Music" but, in my opinion, the epitome of how we should always be towards one another.
Give flowers to your idols while you still have the chance.
Do it for family and friends also.

Giving it all he's got is all he's ever done, and for her to be there for him when he couldn't ... Priceless.

It hurts my soul seeing Willie like that. She'll be remembered for that proformance, helping a legend get through a song.

Thank YOU for watching and appreciating this performance. I agree. This is what we need right now.
Same here, jacomans. My eyes weren't dry either, and I'm the polar opposite of a weak/fragile type of person.
I love to see a legendary artist get his flowers while still around. As roadworn as that red-headed stranger is, I can unsympathetically say that their voices sounded *beautiful* together.
Man, I grew up with the Red Headed Stranger album and Willie Nelson & Family Live, and this was a tear jerker of a video for me.
This is priceless! Thank you!
A TRUE country artist honors those that came before them.
Isn't human compassion and empathy, just the most beautiful thing? I wish for our world, and all of our sakes, that we would see and experience this so much more often. So touching and beautiful.
Music is a language that knows no bounds.
Also, Musgraves is a G. Makes me wanna burn one with John Prine
I started crying about the time I saw Kristen Chenoweth rooting for them 💜

Geeze that made me bawl like a baby. Just got back from visiting my 76 yr old dad whom I haven’t seen in 3 yrs and who is deteriorating fast. That one got me hard in the feels.
The mans a legend for breaking away from the polished Nashville scene to create what we now know as the outlaw scene.

I went to see him last uear in Georgia. While he was struggling a little( he had to sit down) his performance was better.
right in the feels
“Jack, I hear you buddy” at the the end was so sweet I had to subscribe 💕
This came up in my recommended. It's been a tough day today, and this was a welcome, wholesome relief to the day. Thank you for that.
This is simply beautiful and real. Thank you for this vid Mike.

saw him in san antonio before this and you could see hes tired then. Its gonna hurt when hes gone
It's tough watching your heroes as they approach the end of their journey but I'm glad you shared it. We need to see more of this kind of humanity.
We need Willie and the farmers need Willie, AGAIN. Willie, ya gotta love him. I always have.
The two times he sings, or "gets it out," are heart-warming and beautiful. Willie has gotten fragile in the past 5 years, making me love him more.

You're a very special person to recognize the depth of this and to highlight it with this video. Thank you!
Thanks so much Mark! I feel it’s important to showcase the depth of performances like this - and not just the shiny objects
His son Lucas is carrying on his tradition and sounds a lot like his father. Thanks for bringing his music to another generation.
Crying my eyes out….. Love the humanity 🙏💙🙏
Yeah, I’m not cryin’ 😢. Allergies. My superhero dad is getting to this age so it hits close to home. Thank you for honoring this kindness and compassion. It’s in such short supply these days. 🙏🙏🙏
I'm not crying! You are!
Willie is such a fucking legend, and I got to see him in concert a couple months ago, and it was amazing to just see him sitting there on stage in front of me
Two class acts✌️❤️
I remember watching the 2014 CMA awards show when Kacey did a duet with the queen of country Loretta Lynn. You could see the respect & admiration Kacey had for Loretta and it was a kind of passing of the torch moment. This performance once again shows her respect & admiration for the legends of country music that paved the way for a new generation to follow. I met Kacey in 2014 when she was touring for her "Same Trailer Different Park" album. She was very humble , friendly & down to earth.
That was heart breakingly, achingly beautiful. It made me weep to see it.
He’s such a pro even now
Another respect path you could hunt down Michael: Stevie "Guitar" Miller talking about his relationship with a mentor.
You point out the most interesting moments. That I would miss 100% of the time. I love your videos
😭😭😭 We must preserve Willie at all costs.
….we all need time to catch our breath at times….life affirming and beautiful
What a beautiful human Kacey is ! She shows what a wonderful person she is , helping Willie out it's the best thing I have seen for a long time thank you
It's truly remarkable
For artists helping each other on stage, I recommend Patty Loveless and Vince Gill, “Go Rest High on the Mountain” sung at George Jones memorial.
I was just looking to see if anyone suggested this. Its a great one.
Nothing is better as an artist than being being able to work with your idols.
Beautifully said. Thank You for sharing these important lovely words. Blessings
Thanks for taking the time to notice and put this one together the way you did - you did really good !!😊❤
I think I see what you’re doing here Michael. Very classy move on your part, and a beautiful picture of what country music should be doing!
Great moment, and great video. Thanks
Beautiful video. Michael at the 7:28 mark = “Me and Paul”.
Journey on! ❤
Kindness remains above and beyond all else.
Welp didn’t know I would be crying but here I am. Miss all of my country heroes and damn out hurts to see Willy struggling but so damn Happy he is still with us
Classy lady
Classy Cowboy
Beautiful song
The last “It will all be alright” was completely emblematic about what we just watched on stage. And her voice made that line sound as beautiful to my ears as the performance did to my eyes.
Do wish she'd sung the last line the way he does. Dreamers like me
Oh Michael……your whole being is so full of love and respect for 2 fabulous artistes…enchanting
Wow man this hit deep. Willie we love you brother and may all the loved ones you’ve lost be waiting for you on the day god calls you. A true legend and what a beautiful person.
Bow to cma
Love your way
OMG! This is priceless!! Thank You for doing this!!!
If youve seen Willie the last two years live, he is in top form for being 90. 2019 was a rough year health wise.
doggone it, I am in tears. I grew up listening to Willy, and the respect shown to him is beautiful...Kindness is a simple, but AWESOME thing.
