I also think that it is one of the best all around fighting knives you can get the price. cold steel had some of the best knives of any of the knife companies for a long time and I think that this was the best tactical knife that they ever made. if you can find one of these bouncing around anywhere I absolutely recommend grabbing it.

Irt the CS R1 having that choil on the spine, while my thumb can actually fit there comfortably, I'd suggest looking into traditional Bowie fighting (yes i know the r1 isn't a Bowie). One of the schools of thought for Bowie fighting was to orient the blade with the edge facing up. You'd then stab your target low, and pull up, cutting the entire target wide open.
I wish Cold Steel would make these again!

Always wanted a Randall. That CS blade looks great. Just can’t afford them.
In bowie knife fighting its standard to turn the knife upside down & thats what the choil on the back side is for. Considering it has a choil for turning the knife upside down though, it should indeed have a fully sharpened swedge imo. Your supposed to be able to deliver a cut w/ the back swedge.
Yeah… I found an old Korean war era manual on using the Randell model one which is basically the same as this knife
Appears closer to a Model 16 than a Model 1. It's an iconic design. Would like to know how close it is to full-tang. Thanks for sharing.

I live in VA and in my state if that part of the knife is sharpened, it cannot be carried even while camping. None of the knives sold in VA are sharpened on the false edge, unless a saw blade. It is not legal to even carry any type of Bowie knife in the state for any reason except camping.
Since most CS blades are coming from China, their quality has really dropped on their medium to low end products. I haven't wanted to risk getting a really high end product because of this. I do have two copy cats of CS san-mai blades that have turned out to be worthy of the CS name when I know they are not there products.

That rounded curve on top of the blade is for picking up a pot or kettle off of a campfire or grill so it won't slip.
@@WiltonakaBearJeter111 no it’s not… It’s a spot for your finger for in reverse grip because this is a combat knife not a camp knife. After filming this I found an old World War II/Korea military fighting knife manual specifically pointing out the purpose of this feature because this knife is almost a direct duplication of the model one by Randall made knives
Its used to hold the knife the spine down thats how they would fight useing the Clippoint as a weapon...also
Reasons the back won't ever com from the factory sharpened: Knife laws, specifically California that I know of.
Not true… several of the knives that they make that I have gotten have either a full double edged or a sharpened swedge
