  • The Apgar score is a scoring system that is used to assess the health of the newborn and identify those who require emergent attention. It is a score ranging from zero to 10 and is calculated by evaluating the newborn based on 5 criteria. This video reviews how to calculate an APGAR score.

    Had a shoulder dystocia birth. Baby’s apgar score was low. My son was blue in the face and very pale everywhere else. He had the cord around his neck also. He didn’t cry for a long time and it took five minutes to get him breathing. God bless all those who saved my precious baby boy. He’s 16 now and perfectly healthy! Xx

    Fantastic explanation! However, let's also remember that not all babies appear pink. Representation matters, especially in medicine! :)

      I agree wholeheartedly. I just finished EMT class and one of the things I struggled with most is that my textbook only refers to white skin and conditions to look for on it. That actually opened my eyes quite a bit.

    The chart at 0:56 threw me off because of how you showed it.
    You said 7 and above is normal with a down-pointing arrow lol.
    Took me a second to realize the chart increases are you go downward.
    Great overall video though, thank you!

      You’re the first person to comment on this! I’ve always wondered if someone would ever spot this. It was not done intentionally, but shortly after publishing this video and watching it again, it thew me off as well. I wish I had designed the chart to increase as it points up. But what can I do now? Hopefully learn some better design for future videos!

    What kind of doctor evaluates this? Pediatrician? Thanks

    • @medzcool
      @medzcool  3 года назад +2

      I guess that depends where you practice medicine. In the United State, it can be a pediatrician, but I have seen experienced nurses calculate this score and even intervene if there was a problem! Also the OB/GYN’s know how to calculate this and so do Emergency Physicians!
