I found what looks to be a knuckle from an animal, most likely a deer, in my oat field and had my sister help prevent it from decomposing. I also found a bone from what looks to be a jaw in an old stream bed in south Dakota
How to find fossils? Easy, go on line and find scientific papers related to known collecting areas where significant specimens were discovered. Then obtain USGS topographic maps and compare them to current hyway maps. Check the area for fragmentary bone fragments or marine organisms. Always get permission from private land owners and Federal and state land are usually restricted from collecting vertebrate fossils.
I live in Arizona and I have a buddy in Payson which is near some well known areas for fossils. Another friend took a trip with a university geology class to near mine tailings near the town of Mammoth. Probably named because the town is so small(?). I found brachiopods, chrinoids, nautilus and rattle snakes !!! Usually where there are fossils there are snakes. Careful.
Yes. And here in Portugal when the weather gets very hot, there are snakes everywhere. fortunately they are not very poisonous, except in some cases that if you are allergic, the situation can get complicated ... Here the greatest danger comes from scorpions and centipedes, there is a particular specimen that if we are bitten we can be very ill ... But all dangers are worth it if we find good fossils! heheheh 😊👍⛏⛏🦕🍀
@@zejurassico my friends and I grew up in the desert here and 99.999% of the time the various scorpions snakes spiders would leave you alone unless you messed with them.
Are you Brazilian? Do you have any experience looking for fossils in highly sedimentary grasslands, swamps or glades? here in Venezuela almost everything seem fossils reservoirs, specially in the Orinoco basin but I can't tell really.
I am Portuguese and my experience is minimal in looking for fossils in flooded places. Mud and sediment make research very difficult unless there is some dry area exposed. I have to visit Venezuela one of these days, maybe when this virus madness ends ...😊👍⛏⛏🦕
I would say yes! But, you know that for an expert, maybe they are not as interest as a rare fossil. In my opinion the value is given by the person that looks, I have some rare and beautiful fossils that some people sayed that "that's just rocks", and sometimes I give some of the broken ones to kids, and they go absolutly crazy with the fact that It is a rock from the time of dinossaurs... ☺ For me, the point is, nature is magnificient, and we can see in fossils beeings from another era that put my life in prespective. We are expected to live more or less than 100 years, what is 1 million years to a fossil?
Hehehe I'm gonna start doing this, I've always liked to collect rocks, so now I'm start looking for fossils btw have you ever found a bone. Cheers from South Africa
Claro.
Where in Portugal is not necessary, but you should never excavate in private property without permission or in protected areas. Portugal and Spain during cretacious periode had a large bay full of marine life a bit like the austalian reff today. 😊🐚🙏👍🦖🦕🐾🐾
