it's so funny that you mention gold hardware. I was just looking on reverb to see how much my 88 Les Paul might be worth. I assume that it's in good condition at best because the gold hardware is all pity but apparently anybody that's ever on the guitar has the same problem therefore it's pretty much understood when you buy one that you're either gonna get a guitar that's not all original or you're going to get pits. Hey Al. I found out about it by accident. Since I started selling the Rok-Lok I've been trying to watch a good amount of shark tank. I read that O'Leary and Herjavec got their start on the Canadian version of the show called Dragon's Den. I saw an episode of it come up on youtube. Coincidentally, in the episode M and M fool Kevin O'Leary into thinking that he's playing a $4000 Martin!

I would put that moniker on this guitar and the Sire guitars. Truly great value. Thanks for always supporting. I truly appreciate your time. Be well. Mark
I'm so glad you like the Rok-Lok. We've been having major inventory issues. Completely my fault. Hey Steven. I believe you know this, but I am a huge Joni Mitchell fan. She is in my big 5. Beatles, Steely Dan, Joni, Van Morrison, and Led Zeppelin. it seems that many Rick Beato among them always point to her mid late 70s work where is she turned towards more jazz oriented style with Jaco and Pat but Hejira is the first album I'm not a huge fan of. I think that her run from Clouds to The Hissing of Summer Lawns is the third greatest streak of albums ever... After the Beatles 12 album run and Zep 1 through Physical Graffiti. Take care and be well. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe A "bad" Joni album is better than almost anyone else's great albums. I admire that she always traveled where "her" muse led her, and not where some producer or exec. demanded she go. It probably cost her a lot of money...

She recently discovered harvest moon and she absolutely loves it. You mention the French Canadian songs. Are you familiar with harmonium? I'm sure you are. Viewer turned me on to them several years ago. Their first album is one of the great examples 12-string use huge sounding guitars. You say you stumble through stuff. I'm sure you're being colloquial but here's a quick recommendation. Take one or two songs it doesn't matter how simple they are take them slowly and absolutely nail them. So...the video in its original incarnation was supposed to be songs that you could play from beginning to end on the 12-string. Although you can get through More Than a Feeling, you can't capture the entire essence of the song with it which is why I left it out. Midway through I scrapped the idea and More than a Feeling became a glaring omission. DOH. :)

That is one impressive instrument, and very well played! What songs inspire me on a 12? Several. First to come to mind at the moment is _The Mary Ellen Carter_ by Stan Rogers. He does it in DADGAD; I'm just not so comfortable in that tuning; I use open-D-chord; which is DADGAD, but with the G tuned down to F#. Fred
Fred my good man. Always a treat to hear from you although you always put me to work! As soon as I finish responding to a few more comments I'm off to listen to Stan Rogers an artist that I'm not familiar with. I only discovered Ralph Towner about a year ago. He's not my favorite songwriter but he's playing in execution this is good is in a 12 string player I've ever heard. I've been playing with a lot of open to his lately. Although when wouldn't know it by watching my videos I've been focusing on finger style in the traditional Chet Atkins style for the past five or six years. My Atkins reed Emmanuel buster B Jones boom chick is starting to get pretty good. Just when I was feeling pretty good about myself I started going into modern finger style i.e. Mike Dawes. Michael Hedges was a freak. Mike Dawes is from another planet. Be well and take care...and keep in touch! Mark
@@8MinuteAxe Now you see there? You've returned the favor, 'cause now I'm gonna have to go look into Ralph Towner . . . Anyway, (the late) Stan R. is one of my singer-songwriter heroes. From the Canadian Maritimes, he came onto the modern-folk scene in the early 70's, with his booming baritone and a bunch of original material, mostly focussed on his home region. He passed away in an airline crash in the mid-80's, at the height of his career. All that said, I won't be disappointed if his music isn't your style, but you might just like it. Another one of his songs to check out - _45 Years._ His kid brother Garnet, who played fiddle in Stan's band, became quite a talented singer-songwriter on his own, after his brother's death.
Hey man. Thanks for checking out the video. I've represented TRTS many times including a full cover of their cover of walk right in ruclips.net/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/видео.htmlsi=hrGuliQKo-A3FlXW. Hey Stephen. My go to capo is the Kyser. The Kyser always grips the strings well but it does pull a little so you need to do a bit of retuning. In one of my tips videos I show a little trick that Tommy E. does. He pushes the strings down at the sound hole after affixing the capo. It helps a lot. In this video I also use one of the funky capos that's made specifically for Taylor guitars. The other capo is a $10 amazon capo that I really like. Let me see here. There's no name on it. If you email me at markaranalli@gmail.com I'll go back and find the original order I placed on Amazon and send you the link. Thanks so much. Mark
Sounds like you got a winner there, Mark! My son had purchased a Vangoa 12 string for me last year, since I couldn’t get lucky enough to win one 😂. If these are as good as you say? I may consider buying one!
Would love to see the tabs/Chords, I have an Ibanez 12 string that i purchased in 1981, still sounds great but need one or two new machine heads. Im going to see if i can work out the chords you are using, you sound great.
Very interesting choice of 12 string songs. In looking at your list of 12 string guitars that you have I was just wondering what happened to your Reverend 12string?
Hey Lee. Great guitar. I've considered picking one up used but I currently own fifteen 12-string guitars and I'm going to have to knock down a wall before I buy another one. Thanks so much for checking out the video. My Reverend is still my go to electric BUT...I just got a Schecter TSH 12 and it required a lot of blood sweat and tears (the first time I ever did luthier type of work on anything) so I'm partial to it right now. You can't beat the Reverend for variety of sound. It makes a big difference when you build a guitar from the ground up to be a 12-string vs slapping 12-strings on a 6. Thanks so much for your time. Take care. Mark
Hey Trey! I did Under the Milky Way in its entirety in a video last year. I really enjoy that song. When it came out I wasn't a big fan but you know, if I knew that the 90s was going to be the last gasp of Rock n Roll (at least as far as the radio and mainstream music is concerned), I would have given it a lot more of my time in real time. I didn't like the 80s or the 90s while I was living it. What I wouldn't give for the 80s now! Thanks so much for your time and comment. I sincerely appreciate it. I hope you have a great week. Please take care and stay safe! Mark
@@8MinuteAxe What drew me to the song was the “bagpipe” sound in the song. I read that it’s done with an Ebow. I bought one but I don’t know enough about pedals to pull it off. Under The Milky Way was one of the reasons I bought a 12 string too. 🎸
Hey Pete. That's a great question and honestly, I really messed up on the video in that I didn't mention the fact that everything was recorded direct with the Baggs Anthem pickup. The pickup is so good. The best acoustic pickup I've ever heard BY FAR (I just picked up a Fishman Rare Earth Blend so we shall see). I really appreciate you checking out the video and calling attention to that. I'm going to do a full review of the guitar soon so I'll have a chance to point out how great it sounds plugged in. Take care and have a great weekend. Mark
Hey Pete. The koa guitar? It's a Taylor GS Mini custom. It's a regular GS mini but it has an upgraded pickup, koa bridge pins, koa tuner caps, and an original truss rod cover that the guy that owned it before me had handmade by an artist in Nashville. I played the smaller Cole Clark at NAMM last year. What a great sounding guitar. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I really appreciate your time. I hope you have a great week. Mark
You asked the most important question of all. I messed up. The entire reason for making the video was to show off the fact that the Algonquin comes with a STOCK Baggs Anthem! This is the FIRST TIME EVER that I recorded an acoustic (12 string or otherwise) by using the pickup direct and not a mic. I meant to make that big part of the video and I ended up not mentioning it at all. Dumb mistake. I've heard great things about the anthem. The only time I ever played one before was that the name show and it was loaded into a very high-end Martin so it was tough to tell what was responsible for the amazing sound. I'm pretty picky when it comes to acoustic pick ups and I rarely use them. As much as I love Taylor guitars and as much as I think the ES2 is an improvement over the old Fishman system they used to use it still doesn't do their are guitars justice. Thanks for bringing that up. Very important. I sincerely appreciate your time and comment. Have a great week and please take care. Mark
Not really familiar with McKenzie and Marr. For a moment from the video thumbnail, there was a part of me that thought to my eyes that it was a classical or nylon string 12 string due to the body shape.
Hi Mark. Have you played Martin HD 12-28? Getting ready to buy one and am curious how you think it compares to the Algonquin. Thanks! Great video buy the way!! Bill.
Hey Jim. It's Beginnings by Chicago. Off of their first album. It's one of my all time favorite songs. I've opened at least 100 solo acoustic gigs with it. :)
Hi Mark, nice video as usual…I know you are familiar with many brands of 12-strings. I am interested in a couple I haven’t seen on your channel yet…the Hagstrom Viking 12, Guild Starfire IV 12 with minihumbuckers, and the Rivolta Combinata 12. Though the Hag is less expensive than the other 2, interested because it has a wider neck than most electrics. Any interest in reviewing these?
Simple answer - standard shape instead of a dreadnaut. For the life of me, I don't understand why dreads are so popular. The sound is unbalance and bass heavy. A concert or standard shape is simply sweeter sounding.
I agree with you. Martin loves to dreadnaut/dreadnought everything. LOL. I believe it's closest to an Orchestra. Whatever it is, it's super comfortable. My Takamine jumbo is very difficult for a small person to play (I'm 5 6). I really struggle with it even when I set the action in the sweet spot. You are 100% correct. Thanks for checking the video out and for weighing in. Take care and have a great week. Mark
I have one of each type. My mahogany parlor is really suited for finger picking and my dread is usually used for accompaniment strumming. Each one has a purpose and excels in a specific sound.
It's not actually a jumbo. I need to measure it. It's a unique shape. I'm only 5 6 and the Takamine is murder to play (it's so big it's almost not worth even breaking it out). This guitar is almost as comfortable as the 452.
I play Norwegian Wood on my Martin 12 string but I use a capo that can just bar the bottom (A down to E) strings leaving the 11/12th strings open so they can play the bass D note. Try it, you'll never go back.
You're kinda playing in drop d the hard way. I play it in drop tuning as well. If you get greater tuning stability capoing all six and dropping. When I'm playing live I'll usually do rocky mountain high (also capo2 drop), never going back again (capo 4 drop), ooh la la (7 drop). I use partial capos for a couple of Leo Kottke songs. And you're absolutely right, the low d allows for a pedal that's very much like George's sitar. Thanks for the tip. I appreciate the support. Take care. Msrk
@@8MinuteAxe Great to talk to you. I've been playing on stage for over 55 years so we're "birds of a feather". One other thing I've noticed (which makes sense once I discovered it) is that if you capo a 12 string anywhere near the nut, the low E string will go sharp because it's thicker so the tension on it is a bit higher than the 11th E string. Same goes for the A strings but not so much. As a matter of habit, when I'm on stage with the 12 string and put the capo on near the nut, I automatically flatten the low E string a bit. Saves time. Cheers Mate.
When I pick up my 12 strings I’m inspired by The Byrds and the Beatles.

I assume that it's in good condition at best because the gold hardware is all pity but apparently anybody that's ever on the guitar has the same problem therefore it's pretty much understood when you buy one that you're either gonna get a guitar that's not all original or you're going to get pits. Just don't swallow them. Ask Zachary Taylor
That 12-string sounds amazing!
Hey man. Great to hear from you. How's your wrist (s)?
Shoot me an email when you have a little time. Markaranalli@gmail.com. I'd love to catch up!
WOW!! Great sounds!!
Hey Richard. I really appreciate the kind words. I'm grateful for your time. I don't take it lightly. I hope you have a great week. Please stay safe and take care. Mark
Hi Mark. I have never heard of this Guitar Brand. Can't wait for your review video of it. Your playing and song choices were superb
Awesome video Mark! I think k my favorite is Mr. Tambourine Man
Hey Steven. Always good to hear from you. I appreciate the long time support. I hope you're well. Mark
I didn't recognize all the songs, but they all sounded great.
Hey Bob. It looks like your channel is doing well. Congrats. Not easy to get to 1000. Took me a long time. Take care. Be well.
@@8MinuteAxe I am in a very small niche and went over the 1K subs mark a while back, but I am only at 3,300 watch hours so I am not fully monetized yet. But I am enjoying what I am doing in "retirement" and not trying to earn a living with the channel.
Terrific sound from this 12! And of course you really do it justice, Mark!
hey Michael. I actually had never heard of the company and I was just tooling around RUclips and I came upon a video for Dragon's den. Since I invented the rock lock I've been trying to Watch shark tank on a regular basis and I read that Kevin O'Leary and Robert Herjavec both got their start on dragons den. It's a Canadian show. MacKenzie and marr or a Canadian company. In the episode that they appear on O'Leary is fooled into thinking that they are guitar is a four thousand dollar Martin. The guitar really is incredible value. And you know I don't do paid reviews. I try to be as objective as possible although let's face it how objective can we really be when we actually have the instrument in our hands. Sometimes I want to scream "this time I REALLY mean it". I would put that moniker on this guitar and the Sire guitars. Truly great value. Thanks for always supporting. I truly appreciate your time. Be well. Mark
I was NOT expecting "Beginnings" on your list! Sounded great but I kept waiting for the horns and Robert to come in. 😁 Thank you, Mark.
I've performed Beginnings probably 200 times. Perhaps I'll do a cover for the channel. Thanks so much for the kind words.
Great video, Mark! Here Comes the Sun sounds great on 12-string! You and your guitar sound great! I love my Rock Lock! Thanks! :)
I'm so glad you like the Rok-Lok. We've been having major inventory issues. Completely my fault. Although it's been the second best selling strap lock on Amazon for almost an entire year (only the 2.99 d'addario thing sells more), I kept dipping my toe in the water instead of just ordering 50k...which I finally did. They come in next month. We will be out of stock for about three weeks late this month. Hopefully that will be the last time. I hope you're doing well. It's great to be back. Mark
@@8MinuteAxe I wish you great success! :)
Oh man that's some beautiful sounding guitar! Love it!
hey I really appreciate that Terry. It's amazing how uplifting simple comet can be. By simple I'm not belittling in any way. Sometimes simple is huge to my psyche. I'm in that weird purgatory please where the channel is successful but I haven't reached 100,000 followers in the real main stream. I always check myself to make sure it's not ego that's driving it. I don't think it is. I hope not. I'm grateful for your time and support. Please take care. Mark
Good to see you around again, Mark. That is a nice sounding guitar. Joni Mitchell's "Amelia" sounds great on a 12 string in her tuning!
Awesome video, man. I've been really digging your channel...came across doing some 12 string research. And the Rok Lok looks great!
Hey brother. I got your reply. Let me know what you think of the tunes I sent you. Seems like we have a similar vibe and style. Take care. Mark

Hi Mark. Great to hear your playing again. I stumble through You've got to hide your love away, And I Love Her, All things must pass, and Lay Lady Lay, along with a couple of Quebecois songs... Sur mon Epaule ( Les Cowboy Fringants), La Chaine de mon tracteur ( Cayouche), and a couple of Neil Young tunes..... Harvest Moon and Comes a day...✌.
Hey Don. Thanks so much for the encouragement. My wife and I checked out Jeff Lynne and ELO on Saturday night. Jeff is 76 but walks around like he's 106. I'm glad I was able to go to the show as I would be so very surprised if this isn't their final Tour. My wife is not a big music person. If you're like me and most of the students I've had over the years I think that will bring you the most satisfaction. Just my two cents and it's worth exactly that. I hope you have a great week please take care stay safe and be well. Mark

Hey Robert. I really appreciate you doing that. I usually index the songs. I took a month off because I broke a couple ribs and I needed a break but honestly psychologically I've been struggling with making videos. It's crazy because I love playing guitar and I enjoy the editing process which most people hate but there's something about hitting record and performing on camera that is always intimidating regardless of how many times I've done it. It's one of those things where it's always 10 times easier once I get started. It's just the thought of it. It's all in my head but that's usually the hardest thing to overcome. This is one amazing 12 string as good as a Guild 12 string and Taylor 12 string. Speaking of which I am learning how to play a Taylor 12 string now.
Hey Bradley. I recently bought the Taylor 452 but I think I like this one better!!
@@8MinuteAxe My Taylor 12 string is the cutaway version of the 150e and I enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed my Guild 12 string being the 2512 deluxe ce.
More Than A Feeling! Boston.
DOH. :)
Mark, I love the grand orchestra shape, just wish it had a cutaway.
Hey Charles. Good call. Orchestra is what it's closest to. I like the cutaway but you definitely lose something with that little piece cut out. LOL. I hope you're well. Have a great week!. Mark
IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Leelossi. Sadly the impressive part is that I actually got out of my head and started making videos again. I continue to wrestle with trying to be creative without the ego being the driving force. I don't take it lightly. Please stay safe and take care. Mark

Another one of his songs to check out - _45 Years._
His kid brother Garnet, who played fiddle in Stan's band, became quite a talented singer-songwriter on his own, after his brother's death.
I'm surprised you did not do any of The Rooftop Singers songs that featured 12-strings... such as Walk Right In!
Hey man. Thanks for checking out the video. I've represented TRTS many times including a full cover of their cover of walk right in ruclips.net/video/SfvYO9oPEv4/видео.htmlsi=hrGuliQKo-A3FlXW. Good morning 🙏 Rock us out 🎉
Hey Sal. I haven't checked my email yet but I will get you the card soon. I promise. Mark
Fabulous. What capo are you using. Just bought a lovely 12 string but my capos don’t grip all the strings firmly
I recently bought a Takamine 12 string guitar and my first song I learned was San Francisco by Scott McKenzie.
Take care. Mark
I like the 12 string guitar parts on Feel Like Making Love by Bad Company and Under The Milky Way by The Church
Thanks Mark, was the guitar plugged in or mic'd? Love the jumbo or mini jumbo body shape for a 12. Enjoying the fresh take on these tunes.
Mark
macmarr does make some nice guitars.
This is my first but it won't be my last!
My personal choice for an acoustic 12 is an Emerald X-30 12 string.
What is the guitar hanging on the wall over the rack in the background. Looks a lot like a Cole Clark I have.
Mark
How recorded? What pickups? Interesting...
Mark
I did a search afterwards and found pickups were an additional option. Very helpful to know they're worth having. Lovely sound.
Not really familiar with McKenzie and Marr. For a moment from the video thumbnail, there was a part of me that thought to my eyes that it was a classical or nylon string 12 string due to the body shape.
Hey Zach. It's definitely a unique shape. It's jumbo-esque but more compact. It plays almost as easily as the Taylor 452 which is the short scale 12.
Hi Mark. Have you played Martin HD 12-28? Getting ready to buy one and am curious how you think it compares to the Algonquin. Thanks! Great video buy the way!! Bill.
What's the song at 3:15...
‘Beginnings’ by Chicago
Hey Jim. It's Beginnings by Chicago. Off of their first album. It's one of my all time favorite songs. I've opened at least 100 solo acoustic gigs with it. :)
Thank you.
Classical Gas...
😮
I agree. Story of my life.
My poor 12 string is in its case in the corner. Guess I’m going to have to get it out…..
Maybe this will help goose it...ruclips.net/video/pDeO1R2mCW4/видео.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe
Nice sound! But at jumbo size, it'd be pretty uncomfortable for my shoulder.
