I lived in Shanghai for 3 years. There was an auto shop in Pudong who would put a BMW copy front end on anything you liked. Didn't matter whether it was a car, a panel van, a truck or a people mover.
In the states they call them kits so It's nothing new. A friend of mine had his VW car with a rolls Royce FRONT and a Lincoln continental rear. It was really cool looking back then. He had gotten the kit from the states.

Not really, GTA combines usually 2 cars in to one. For example Massacro has F12 Ferrari front end Aston Martin Vanquish rear. Obey 9f has Audi R8 front and noble M600 rear.

BMW used to be almost completely CBU, with a lot of their cars made in Germany, with a few exceptions like in the USA, now for their new i7 they’re outsourcing the production to China, and the whole car is going to me made there. At that price the roller knock off or probably a Tesla Copy - it just shows how much we're being screwed by car makers.
They dump millions into R&D and advertising and then they are copied at lower quality for free.
Be interesting to compare the crash stats. Hit a wall in a knock off, then see if you're being had.
It's your government that's screwing you, not the auto makers. They are being forced by regulation to only produced expensive and complicated engines with turbos and/or battery packs to try to meet crazy emissions standards. They aren't allowed to sell you a cheaper, simpler vehicle.
You have to remember, all the automakers are competing with each other for market share. If one could undercut the other's price, they'd do it. But they can't. They are charging you the least amount they can, while staying in business.

@@SDav21 I think the design was improved by later generations, specially the amg line of the 2015 model year. Designs are debatable but I guess you're talking about the build quality. I haven't tried the w203 but yeah, later models quality is disappointing specially when you pay thousands for wood trims that turn out to be fake, pretty flimsy plastic...

Actually the BJ version of G-wagon is co-developed by the joint venture between the Chinese Co. and Mercedez Benz. If you open up the bonnet, you can actually see shared parts with the G-wagon. The first generation even has the Mercedez engine cover, manufactured by Mercedez China (the said JV). So strictly speak it's not a 'knockoff', but a cheapened version developed by MB for the Chinese market. However, it tanked in sales as the Chinese still likes that MB logo on their G-Wagon, which is why MB then came out with a 2.0T 240hp G-wagon G350 (not the G350d) for the Chinese market, and the sales went crazy, to a point you'd have to pay 300k RMB / 45k USD to get your hands on one, for a total price of 260k USD! A 2.0T engine！
As for the rest of the models, yeah they are quite embarrassing, and when you see one on the road in China most people laugh at it, especially that Zotye-Macan.

As a Chinese, I have never seen any of the models you mentioned, except for BJ40 and BJ80. Ironically, the company that makes these SUVs is Mercedes and Jeep's biggest partner in China.
The BJ40 is actually sold in my country and it's a surprisingly good car.
You should check out the Suzuki Jimny, for me the Jimny looks way more too exciting than Mercedes or Jeep

I’m a student currently studying industrial design in RISD in the United States, my nationality is China, and as a future designer, I feel ashamed by these Chinese companies and the copying tradition that China always has for years. I felt sorry and I always respect the copyrights of the original designers that spent countless time on designing these fabulous products. And let’s hope that this ugly fact of China can eventually be changed by our generation.🙏

You should have said that Baic is also making the Mecedes brand for the German company, so they probably stop the assembly line when they've completed the Mercedes order and restart the same assembly line with some small changes here and there to make the knock offs.

I bought a Lifan 320 eleven years ago , I have changed twice the water pump, several times oil, twice gas charge for air conditioner and....that's all. Cheap car, inexpensive maintenance.
