We flied Austrian Airlines once and we had connected flights. There were like 7-8 of us and during registration and one didn't get his boarding pass for the second flight. At that point the airline representative told us that every airline company oversell their flights and that there are always 2-4 people who don't come.
Overbooking takes place in alot of travel-business. I know it from people that work at hotels. Hilton hotels sometimes book up to 115% capacity. Charterbus and -shippingcompanies do the same aswell.
Richard if you get the chance I would highly recommend looking at Leonard French, he is a practicing copyright lawyer here on youtube. He went through the United case and it gets even more in the Doctor's favor as it actually turns out they had no legal basis to do anything they did to the man. It is... like watching a trainwreck.
By the way Richard, this does happen in the hotel industry as well. mostly because there really are people who don't turn up, but it's not the same since you don't pay until you arrive. if it was a pre-purchase like a flight/ something that could affect the rest of your travel plans that much... that's different.
Most airlines in Europe and Asia (Star Alliance airlines are the ones I'm familiar with) overbook by 2-3 seats as people reliably re-book or miss their flights. Still, it's a major flaw that they didn't take their crew members that needed a transit into consideration for that particular flight.
I work at an airport in Europe and cheaper airlines like Ryanair overbook like crazy during peak times, fortunatley they get away with it most of the time because passengers no show or get don't mind getting rebooked. So it is not just an American problem, its more of a cheap airline problem.
In the states I fly Alaska and they are always good with customer service and never heard or seen any overbooking problems. United is just a shitty airline in general
It's not really a cheap airline problem, it's all airlines. (Or like, 99% of airlines). Just from personal experience working in airports in Canada and one in the UK briefly. I believe they have statistics of how many passengers would show up depending on the location/time/etc.
To be honest: Nivea being owned by a german company is probably the reason they don't give a fuck about that advert thing. Because noone over here gives a fuck about skin color... Sure there are people who are anti-foreigners and anti-refugees.. but I have never really heard or witnessed anything 'racist' based purely on skin color. It's just not a thing here I guess? If people are being anti here it doesn't matter if you're white or black or whatever you want to name the color of your skin. So saying 'they should know better' is kind of....weird. Because we don't act and think the way a lot of americans seem to. Skin color is just not a big deal here. Noone goes full retar.. uh racist over someone having darker skin, as well as the other way around? I wish people would stop being so oversensitive in everything they do nowadays. White has been the "color of purity" in the western civilisation for centuries. And that means real WHITE not pink...
In my opinion, United did nothing wrong but the situation wasn't resolved in a good way for both parties. It could have been resolved much cheaper (if you look to stock/company value) and without the media backlash. The most obvious solution would be to just offer more money until a final volunteer steps forward, let's say they no one volunteers until they offer $5000. It's a lot of money, but is also a lot less than the money they "lost" when their stock dropped, and without the more indirect and long term effect of the media backlash. They didn't do anything wrong due to that when you buy a ticket (or pretty much anything for that matter), you agree to the Terms of Service. It would be very surprising if the ToS didn't have a paragraph which states that United Airlines have the right to dismiss you from the airplane without notice (or some similar phrasing). As David Dao agreed to these ToS when he bought the ticket, they had every right to remove him from the plane since he did not co-operate and follow the terms he had agreed to. He is therefore the "real" culprit in this story, even though I think that United Airlines could have handled this way, way better.
Hey Richard, I was wondering if you could perhaps give your thoughts on the whole Jordan Peterson situation and maybe use the video in your next show for a few laughs
People aren't principled. They will forget about it in a month or two, most people will sacrifice priniciple for convenience, if it's the cheapest flight/only flight available for the specific time someone wants to go, they won't replan their holiday just to boycott the company. I want to believe that people are that good, and they certainly will jump on the twitter hate bandwagon to virtue signal that they hate companies abusing people (which of course is totally wrong) but they won't have the backbone to never used United again.
I dunno who Spicer is cause i am not from America but from what i heard about "Hitler didn't gas anyone" i think that he meant that he didn't use chemical weapons in the battlefield although he phrased it very poorly, it truth Hitler didn't use chemical warfare as he was a victim of it during WW1, the gas used in the concetration camps is something different, and even though i still think he was a horrendous human being, some things are what they are.
Hey Richard just so you know according to my father who worked 20 years at Lufthansa now, overbooking is also a common thing to do here in Europe (at least in Germany). Without it airlines wouldnt be able to compete globaly. However s forceful removal of a passenger by police because of overbooking wouldnt happen
this might be a stupid comment. but would this happen in any other country than america ? police coming in using force against a civilian ? you said he has broken nose busted teeth etc i mean jesus what even is that.
your point on overbooking is wrong richard. many other trades do this, such as healthcare, because it makes massive economical sense saving millions per annum with little wrong with it. most people are happy to accept money for inconvenience and it reduces the prices of plane tickets for everyone. why are you complaining?
'running on the cheap' helps you because it means the price of the ticket is much cheaper and in the vast majority of cases you wont be 'stuck' involuntarily due to people valuing money/ free flights for an extra day in a country, so will leave the flight so you dont have to.
Liking the upload schedule :) Keep it up Richard and Sam! You guys are the best!
You beautiful man! Keep these rolling in! I'll be down for a 5 hour episode
Dude what the fuck are these episodes im actually feeling happy for once keep it up big man 🙃

Tough I do not always concur with your opinions I do love your reports. Keep up the good work.

Doesn't make it right....
No not by any means. Richard just seemed to be very surprised bout it so I thought to clarify that this, sadly, is a common habit.
The surprise "DEEZ NUTS" should become a show tradition
'I want to commend you for beating up an old man'.
Richard if you get the chance I would highly recommend looking at Leonard French, he is a practicing copyright lawyer here on youtube. Thx for the show

And yet twitter are like "DEEZ NUTZ?" @ 25:00
Yep.
goddim
All airlines overbook their flights, actually. It's one of the reasons why ticket pricing has come down so much in recent times.

i fly wizzair and blueair throughout Europe and never had this problem
In the states I fly Alaska and they are always good with customer service and never heard or seen any overbooking problems.
United is just a shitty airline in general
That's because the check-in agents usually take care of it, or rebook the passengers that arrive at the airport late.

How long do you think it will take for them to remedy situations like this by simply banning cameras and smartphones in the cabin.
I hear brand tattoos are all the rage.
Have to start buying Nivea products now :)
Hey Richard, I was wondering if you could perhaps give your thoughts on the whole Jordan Peterson situation and maybe use the video in your next show for a few laughs
