I discovered Mumbo sauce as a visitor to DC back in '91 while dating a Howard student. Yum's on 14th & P was my introduction. Now on my annual trip to DC I always go there and get enough to bring home! (What I can get past airport security, that is..) I freeze it and break it out when cravings hit!
DC native here. You found a lot of people who never tried it wow I guess that's indicative of people being priced out the city. Im surprised no one said Howard China and Jus over the line but I would love to know what you think about China Sub Shop 905 Chillum Rd, Chillum, MD
Thank you for your input and yes, a lot of people in DC are definitely getting priced out. I will be adding China Sub Shop to my list! What kind of flavor profiles do you find in their mumbo sauce?
@@DannyGrubs first a little darker in color than that bright red I've seen around definitely bold light kick and a sweet finish that creates a tang. Lol I'm out of adjectives now.

go to the chinese rstrnt on georgia ave next to the kentucky fried chicken that sit's on the corner , they have the orange mambo sauce which is the best !

So when you get a chance check them out, there on the left when come into Waldorf from Crain Hwy. as far as the food, it’s a hit or miss. Just the sauce is all I want

Here in Newark we call it Chinese Bbq Sauce never knew it was called Mumbo sauce. Kwai Lam Chinese Food Restaurant on Broad Street in Newark, New Jersey has the best Mumbo Sauce.
If u eating right away you should get the mumbo on top and you should try mumbo and hot sauce, I don’t really like hot sauce but I won’t be turning back
Chicago came up with it but it looks like bbq sauce, when DC got it we changed the whole the whole recipe but kept the name which we should have changed also
Let get something straight, SaucyDonut24, Chicago's mumbo sauce *is not* DC's (DMV's) Mumbo sauce. They *are not* related to each other in any way, they just happen to have the same name. Yes, Chicago invented a sauce in which they called, mumbo sauce, yet the DC's recipe is not Chicago's recipe. Once again, DC's mumbo sauce is not a variation of Chicago's recipe. DC's (the DMV's) Mumbo sauce is an original recipe. It has nothing to do with Chicago. I am going to make it clear *one* more time, DC's Mumbo sauce originated in DC. The only thing Chicago mumbo sauce has in common with DC's Mumbo sauce is the same name. They are different sauces with the same name. That is it. Now, stop with the wiki searches.
@@risharddaniels1762 Wow, following the boucing ball must be hard for you... There is no direct link to the Chicago sauce and the DMV sauce. _They only have the same name in common._ We know that Chicago had a sauce named Mumbo sauce and that the DMV has a sauce name Mumbo sauce. You went near HU and missed the best mumbo sauce in the city. Howard China has superior mumbo sauce. The flavor has never changed over many years. If mumbo sauce is too red I know it's not going to be good. HoChi's mumbo sauce is slightly orange.
It has to be the right color not that bright orange stuff, if it turn to jello when you put it in the fridge overnight its cap as the youngins say, close and safe bet is that Capital City Mumbo sauce.
For real. Does the restaurant have a cracked window and neon sign with bulletproof glass on the inside? If not then it’s not the spot to get good mumbo sauce.
that's a hard question... taste is based on a person's preference since food is highly subjective but personally, i liked the mumbo sauce at the hamilton the best since it's sweeet, tangy, with a unique kick to it. they say a professionally trained chef made the recipe for that one
Ok so hong Kong on MLK SE and Lucky's on southern Ave has by far the best mumbo in the area idk who recommends these places to u but they truly missed 2 of the best places
Unfortunate reality : ALL of the spots that are purported to have good Mumbo sauce in the city have fallen off. From Good Hope Carryout to Wings N Mo Wings to the various Yum’s and Jerry’s. Sometime during the gentrification the previous taste profile of the 90’s and early 2k was lost. It is literally a thing of the past. The stuff they’re selling now sucks and tastes like chemicals or spiced sugar water. So even at its best it is nothing near what it was. This makes me sad. The problem is there are kids, even locals that grew up on crap sauce and don’t know better. The gentrifiers obviously don’t know any better so they recommend any old thing. Again, this makes me sad.
