Series: Call The Midwife to sum up the ep; tony was arrested and publicly outed for betraying his pregnant wife by attempting a "romantic interaction" with an undercover policeman. the incident was stated in the newspaper and his wife was ridiculed & outcast because of it. his father-in-law sacked him from his job & disowned him. he was deeply regretful due to the pain he'd caused as well as the fact that he'd never be allowed to be himself. he attempted to take his own life but was saved by father-in-law. in the end, the father-in-law reaccepted him. tony stood by his wife & child, and publicly defended her honour to prevent further shame towards her from the community. i felt for both in this ep. it was unacceptable that he cheated. however, it did seem clear to me that he had love for her, just was not IN LOVE with her as he's gay. it was a crime to be gay at this time. they were forced to pass as straight or go to prison. if they didn't go onto have a straight marriage, it was questioned. they often found a sweet woman, married & loved her the best that they could. his cheating was indeed unacceptable but so were the circumstances he was forced into.
Yet he married her, provided for her and wants to be in her life even if he is not physically attracted to her. The list of gay men who married/engaged with women is long. Think of Elton John or Freddy Mercury or Formular One Pilot Ralf Schuhmacher. This episode takes place in the 60ies where homosexuality is considered a crime that will get you in prison, work camp or worse.
He did what was expected of him. And he did love her, just in a platonic way. Being gay was illegal, and he not only got arrested, he lost his job, and people in the streets are basically spitting at him. His life is ruined. I don't even want to think about how that must haver been like.
I...I feel awful sorry...for them both. Him leading her on....probably thinking like most did back then. That...he could change. Now...they're both ruined and the baby...too
This is probably from Call the midwife. It's an incredible show not only the characters and content but it really shows what life was like then and what challenges women and children and doctors faced during that time. It's phenomenal

He betrayed her. He used her. He lied to her. In those days he ruined her.
