  • Billed as the "Game of the Century", the contest more than lived up to its hype, with No. 1 Nebraska Norman with a 35-31 win over the No. 2 Sooners.

Tom Osborne. One of my all time favorite CFB coaches from any era!

Considering the year long build-up to the game, the way both teams demolished all opponents leading up to it, the way the game played out and considering that NU and OU finished nos. 1 and 2 in the final polls, I doubt there will ever be a game that tops it. I'm glad I got to see it as it happened.

My dad got tickets through the medical school. He bought season tickets the next year and we got a chance to witness the Switzer dynasty (70s/80s). Definitely had an impact on my life as we shared so many hours talking about the game.

Very nice! It is always a source of nostalgia and pride for me as a Husker fan to see how respectfully fierce the OU-NU rivalry was/is. In a college football world full of hateful rivalry, it is good to remember how the game was once played and wish that it could be so once again. Oh, and it is wonderful to see footage of those offensive schemes.

Greatest college football game ever. Barry Switzer must still be on drugs to say they would have won by "2 or 3 touchdowns" if they passed more. Ah, doubt it Barry. Nebraska went back to zone coverage with their D-backs in the last minute of the game. Not one pass completed after that. Nebraska was never in trouble and scored whenever they had to. Still, a great game. Classy bunch of guys on both teams.

Of all the hyped college football "games of the century", this humdinger came the closest to living up to its billing. 1) game was on the schedule much earlier that year, but TV, fortunately this time, persuaded the Big 8 & the schools to play instead on Thanksgiving Day 1971, & for much more $$. Also, since moving the game to Thankagiving Day, each school had bye week the week before which gave more time to promote same & sell more Sports Illustrated magazines which had on its cover that week OU (the irresistible force, Greg (Do it) Pruitt & the wishbone) vs. the immovable object (Nebraska defense w/Outland Trophy winner Richie Glover). What a game & what a call for ABC by Chris Schenkel, Bill Fleming, & Coach Bud Wilkinson!! 50th anniversary this year too. Wow, 50 years!!

Right at the end of that game, Mildren through a desperation bomb and had a wide-open receiver he just overthrew him.

and the receiver was Jon Harrison. Nebraska couldn't cover him because of his speed. He was the guy making up ground on Johnny Rodgers punt return for a TD when a Nebraska player hit Harrison out of bounds at the last sec ( could have been a clipping call). Harrison was the fastest guy on the field.

Why did the QB #20 and maybe some othes, have different jerseys than the rest if the team. ie ; everyone else had2 red stripes on their jerseys and some players didn't? Was it the budget?

I was taught wishbone offense at my secondary school, where I was voted football captain my senior year, and watched OKLAHOMA ( my fav at the time) or NEBRASKA on WABC College football at every opportunity. I watched this game live. Would watch TEXAS whenever I could do so too. This isn't the GAME of the Century but it is important in the history of our nation's national pasttime.
